Virtual space has permeated all aspects of modern life, whether formal or informal, serious, or amusing. Whether alone or in large crowds. The desire for actual space separate from the virtual becomes vividly felt, instilling it with additional demands. This research determines whether persuading quality success in the development of creative spaces, which architects are increasingly pursuing during the epidemic period, will give improved quality place-making that benefits higher work productivity. The research approach is qualitative, with a sample of 51 (fifty-one) coffee shops in the city of Semarang. Photographs, interviews, maps, and questionnaires are used to collect data. The study discovered many coffee shop design attempts that exemplify placemaking capabilities, specifically classic subtleties, worldwide brand nuances, and local brand nuances. Although it appears simple, the classic feel evokes more "homely" memories for some guests of productive age owing to the bonding feelings associated with remaining at home, even if it requires the ambience of an outside space. While a creative space is not always capable of providing enhanced creative placemaking, additional features such as cultural values and distinguishing icons that may be recognized by space users are required to boost their creativity.

The city must also win a competition through brands in the form of quality of life of creative cities. UNESCO also lists the need for an optimal effort to develop the community's culture and creativity to stimulate the city's regeneration into sustainability. The study aims to dissect the city of Pekalongan as a case study. The research uses qualitative methods with data collection through the Big Data harvesting process analyzed through the interpretation process. The findings are the relationship between the physical elements of city space and the strong meaning concerning the creative abilities possessed by its people, both tangible and intangible. It is this strength that underlies the distinctive and sustainable cultural development to build a city competitive advantage.

It improves, liberates, and strengthens society's character. Architectural pedagogy is complicated, and it necessitates bringing forth the learners' subjectivity of thought. A good pedagogy methodology will aid in the creation of a collaborative classroom environment and a friendly relationship between the educator and the student. This study explores the preferences of architectural design students in carrying out the process of design creation in various random and controlled alternatives or commonly called the black box and glass box way of thinking. With the help of digital-based applications and tools and enabling additional artificial intelligence implemented in creating a work both randomly and controlled. The research is qualitative methods. The population is several students who take part in the final assignment of the Architecture study program who have completed the final project and can summarize the stages of the creative process that have taken place. The results showed that random and random processes that alternate with systematic and controlled thought processes can have their own space and play a complementary role in design. Most students will explore randomness and be able to use it to produce an excellent design. Overall, students have a particular preference for more structured solutions. The study found that the spontaneous, unstructured ability of what is often called the Blackbox method is precisely what is needed and plays an important role in the design needed to solve problems in the field.

Research paper thumbnail of Formulating “Local HUL” Instrument for Community Based Cultural Heritage Management in the Historic Urban Core of Historic City – with Semarang and Solo in Indonesia as Case Study

International Journal of Asian-Pacific Heritage Studies: Sustainable Conservation of Cultural Heritage, 2021

The UNESCO World Heritage listing is often misunderstood by the government and the community in A... more The UNESCO World Heritage listing is often misunderstood by the government and the community in Asia, including Indonesia, as tourism promotion or branding. This tendency has led to unwanted consequences, such as gentrification, the commodification of heritage, loss of physical integrity, etc. Small and medium cities in the Asia Pacific region have been facing rapid social and physical transformations due to decentralization and expansion of economy and infrastructures from the metropolitan areas into hinterlands. These developments have threatened the historic urban core due to the weak planning and lack of conservation policy.
This paper aims to formulate a more coherent and comprehensive heritage management instrument for a medium city (e.g., provincial and regional capitals, or smaller towns), based on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) recommendation by UNESCO. Cases in two cities will be used in this study: Semarang, and Surakarta, in Central Java, Indonesia. The study will focus on three components: (1) Comprehensive mapping of tangible and intangible cultural heritage assets to find the “DNA” of the community and place; (2) Capacity building and empowerment of the local community to protect its heritage and to develop the economics of heritage; and (3) Protection and continuation of the authenticity of local living heritage (the “DNA” of the community identity and place personality). It is expected that the outcomes of this research will contribute to (1) the formulation of comprehensive local HUL mapping of tangible and intangible heritage as the basis for a more scientific and democratic process in managing conservation and urban development; (2) the provision of Heritage Management Recommendations for Local Community and Local Government; and (3) the production of new knowledge and contribution to the literature on the topic of urban planning and heritage conservation.

By the empirical study on those cases, the intention is to find the role of each element and its relationships between them, in the context of brand-management model to develop the competitive advantage of the city. The analytical process will be focused on the crucial role of the local community as the main player in city identity formation. The local community is the main user of the urban space who can make decisions over space, according to their inherited perception and belief, individually and communally. This qualitative research employed interviews and direct immersion with the urban community, to examine the anatomy of the place evolution in the two types of Indonesian cities: the heritage city of Surakarta and the cosmopolitan city of Semarang. The theoretical invention of the city authenticity's DNA and its elements that have been formulated on a heritage city from the previous study is used as the basis for verification of the other cities. The research findings have proven that the uniqueness of the urban places is very much influenced by the decisions made by the local communities based on their interaction with their living environment. On the next stage, the interaction between the community and their place would be contributed to the sustainability of the city identity, which will become the main factor of the advancement of city branding and the increase of the competitive advantage of the city.

Some researchers and experts have been developing various approaches to create urban planning tools and policies aimed to sell the city to tourists. Gradually, the City Branding concept has been evolving into an attempt to project the city as a unique social, cultural, and political reality called the Sense of Place. Some cities have successfully projected their city brand by promoting their own social-cultural assets centred to the urban communities, history, artisans, and intellectuals. As part of strategy, Tourist Gaze concept is introduced to develop a unique space or place from the perspective of tourists, based on the principle that the visitor may have a sense of place even before he or she being physically there. The "smartness" of a city is judged from how successful the city developing its own branding based on its own realities, and at the same time can make itself attractive to visitors and its own community. This paper will elaborate on how the combination of Tourist Gaze and Sense of Place concepts can be applied in historic urban spaces and places in order to preserve the authentic identities of the urban neighbourhoods and at the same time adapt the city to changes and economic progress. This paper will present some real successful cases in applying this strategy to be a sustainable and resilient Smart City without losing its own authentic identity. The lessons learned from these cases will be contributed as learning points for Ho Chi Minh City intentions to be recognized as a good Smart City.
