Indeed, for most people the submarine space is an alien world of difficult access and even
more difficult understanding. This idea of the underwater spaces as virtually inaccessible has
conditioned in large measure the attitude towards the research on past human underwater
engagement: for a long time, the depths beneath the surface were neglected as places of
human action, conceptualisation and imagination. In recent years, a newfound interest in
the relationship of humans with their environment(s) has also sparked the curiosity to
investigate liminal spaces such as deserts, mountaintops and, of course, the sea. However,
research on ancient freediving practices remains sparse, with few individual studies tackling
the problem from a variety of different perspectives (Rodríguez-Álvarez, 2020, 2023). With
the workshop ‘The Ocean Below: Human Experiences and Material Culture of Freediving
across Time and Space’, held at the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University
of Warsaw, the organisers (the authors of this report) aimed precisely at bringing together a
group of scholars with their own individual background and expertise towards the common
goal of communicating where freediving studies are at, and of establishing a baseline for future research in this field.

Direct evidence of diving is scarce, which has contributed to hiding their presence in the scholarship. Although references to divers have been preserved in the literary record, no attempts have been made to correlate these statements with the archae-ological record. By applying a new theoretical framework that emphasizes ethnography and experimental archaeology, this study is able to link sever-al misidentified artifacts to the work of divers, a first step towards a better understanding of the important role they played in the economy of their communities.

The results of this research show that the advent of the Black Figure pottery style was intrinsically related to the adoption by Corinthian potters of new manufacturing techniques and recipes for their paints and slips. This change of the paint and gloss recipes required the use of new raw materials, which takes the discussion on pottery production at the site from purely technical issues to social and economic ones, such as access and control of these scarce resources or the relationships between potters and their local community. The significance of this discovery also sheds new light upon the diversity of local styles in Greece.

Direct archaeological evidence of diving in antiquity is rather scarce. With the exception of some inscriptions and archaeological finds, most of the information on divers has been preserved in classical authors. These texts refer to the use of divers for the harvesting of sponges, the salvage of cargoes and military operations. Most of the studies on divers rely on these sources, and present a literary approach to the topic.
This research intends to transcend the limitations of the textual analysis and rely on other disciplines to compensate the low visibility of the divers in the archaeological record. In order to achieve this, the present work relies on past and present evidence from the archaeological and the ethnographic record. The use of middle range theory allows archaeologists to infer from present records past human behaviours. Thus, while experimental studies on ancient metallurgy and rope making can provide information on the tools of the divers, the biology of sponges can provide data on depths and other diving conditions. This evidence can then be contrasted with the extensive literature on the physiology of breath-hold diving, while the social aspects can rely on the cross-cultural comparison with ethnographic studies.
By approaching the topic in this multidisciplinary manner it is possible to present a more complete picture of diving in ancient times. Although the low visibility of this activity in the archaeological record cannot be improved, the application of a MRT approach offers a more coherent picture of this activity in ancient times, something the literary evidence alone cannot achieve.

record of ancient Greece. Direct evidence of diving in antiquity is rather scarce, and this has contributed to hide their presence in the scholarship, failing to recognise the
important roles divers played in their communities. Although references to divers and the use of sponges have been preserved in several texts, no attempt has been made to
correlate these narratives with the archaeological record.
This research intends to transcend these limitations by applying a new theoretical
framework derived from the principles of Middle Range Theory and Behavioural
Archaeology. Their respective emphases on the importance of the ethnographic record and experimental archaeology have made it possible to reinterpret and correlate several artefacts to the work of divers in antiquity. The indirect evidence of their work, for example, in the use of sponges in arts, medicine or personal hygiene, points to an extensive use of this commodity that had to be provided by divers. This is the first step in an ongoing research aimed at providing a more accurate understanding of the important role that divers, and sponges as a commodity, played in the trade and economy of the Mediterranean in antiquity.

This work is the first necessary step towards the completion of a more extensive study of manufacture and society in the Corinthia during the Archaic period. However, the importance of Corinth as a centre of production and the long history of excavations of the ASCSA at the site makes it necessary to approach this site first, before trying to expand the work to other sites in the region. The results will be then used as the framework of my Ph.D research. In this wider work I intend to use the technological choices of the producers as a mode of inquiry in order to define the transmission of skills inside the workshop not only as a functional but also as a social element. Although pottery production started and still exists in some cultures as a part-time household activity, the development of specialised workshops indicates not only a full time commitment, but also a deep involvement in many aspects of the society's economy.

Indeed, the study of shapes is an important part of many scientific fields, such as evolutionary biology, structural biology, image processing and archaeology. However, mathematical shape spaces are rather complicated and nonlinear. The most widely used methods of shape analysis, geometric morphometrics, treat the shapes as sets of points. Diffeomorphic methods consider the underlying curve rather than points, but have rarely been applied to real-world problems. Using a machine classifier,we tested the ability of several of these methods to describe and classify the shapes of a variety of organic and man-made objects. We find that one method, based on square-root velocity functions (SRVFs), outperforms all others, including a standard geometric morphometric method (eigenshapes), and that it is also superior to human experts using shape alone. When the SRVF approach is constrained to take account of homologous landmarks it can accurately classify objects of very different shapes. The SRVF method identifies a shortest path between shapes, and we show that this can be used to estimate the shapes of intermediate steps in evolutionary series.
Diffeomorphic shape analysis methods, we conclude, now provide practical and effective solutions to many shape description and classification problems in the natural and human sciences.

A multi-analytical approach based on petrographic and chemical analysis, supported by refiring tests and geological sampling, has been employed to tackle issues of technology and provenance. Results shed light on patterns of raw material sources exploitation and pottery production and supply at the site over time.

However, the problem was confronted by opposing the archaeological evidence to the literary record, not by combining them in a broader analysis. The aim of this paper is to explore all the evidence on Athenian fortifications at the time Kleon was politically active. Through a careful analysis of all the city defences of the period and the references in Aristophanes and other contemporary sources, two different questions will be addressed: first, if Aristophanes is really referring to the construction of a specific wall and, secondly, if the first hypothesis is accepted, where it was located.

Its initial use could have been for burial. In a final phase the entire cave saw the deposition of large numbers of artefacts before its entrance was blocked.
