In short, engineers need information, Unfortunately, mmr technical science courses don't require assignments that involve information research. It is even more unfortunate, that due the heavy technical itatwe oftheir curriculum, students are open only exposed to hese information retrieval skills a few times in their college career. The Association of College & Research Libraries ond the American Associarion for Higher Education endorsed Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education to describe essential skills that n sfudent shouldpossess to efectively identify the need for and utilize information. These standards correlate with several of the ABET evaluation criteria. This paper will both examine these relationships and explore the need for engineering students to master in...

Use of these systems allows for more consistent reporting to campus administration, allows for the capture of data elements useful for program and accreditation reporting, and greatly enhances the ability to make the work of all faculty on campus more visible. At first glance, these review systems can appear quite simple. However, behind the user interface the systems are quite complex, ingesting and integrating information from campus data systems into a single interface that summarizes and co-mingles known faculty activities with self-reported activities. Some systems also provide a workflow interface used for recording a faculty member’s evaluation and performance rating(s) against the department, college and/ or campus criteria. This comprehens...

Less attention has been paid to how evaluations of faculty members can be used to gather data on teaching, research, clinical work, and outreach to integrate clinical and academic contributions and fill in information gaps in strategic areas such as technology transfer and commercialization where universities are being pressed to do more. Online reporting systems can enable departments to gather comprehensive data on faculty activities that can be aggregated for accreditation assessments, program reviews, and strategic planning. As detailed in our case study of implementing such a system at a research university, online annual reviews can also be used to publicize faculty achievements, to document departmental achievements, foster interdisciplinary and community collaborations, recognize service contributions (and disparities), and provide a comprehensive baseline for salary and budgetary investments.

They are often bibliographically inconsistent, difficult to source, and published to varying standards of quality. In some science and technical fields, these reports are also large in number and central in importance. Additionally, established workflows for acquiring and preserving technical reports in distributed repositories have been undermined by the transition from print to digital. Overall, the "grey literature" challenges librarians face have increased. This paper presents three case studies of how academic libraries have found innovative ways to face the problems of technical reports and improve their production, dissemination, and preservation; thus reducing the duplication of research efforts and saving public funds. Transportation is one example of the disciplines where these described changes are taking place, and the opportunities for libraries to improve the technical report workflow in this field will be a particular focus of the session.
