most acute expression of suffering for the defence of faith in Jesus Christ. The violent death suffered by those who kept a firm faith in the sacred values they confessed marked the whole Christian world from East to West, and offered an example of infinite courage and above all an undeniable model of holiness. This paper is a research on different forms of martyrdom and the artistic expressions used in their visual representation in the Middle Ages, briefly recalling some of the most remarkable creations of Christian art.

From an aesthetic point of view, a conclusion demonstrates a reversal of relations between the aesthetic categories of the beauty and the sublime: the emergence of the ugliness and of the ordinary. Contemporary art seems to show a greater interest for the former categories, which open new creative perspectives for the artist. In this respect, the present study pays special attention to the representation of a controversial issue regarding contemporary artistic creations reflecting offensive or even blasphemous attitudes against Christian religious values. Thus, the most significant features of religiously inspired contemporary artistic creations are highlighted, together with the names of some of the most representative artists concerned with these ideas.

The focus of the paper is to underline the main aspects of the visual representation of this tense moment in the history of Christianity, referring to representative works of the artistic heritage inspired by the event of Christ’s death on the cross. Thus, a number of famous works of art history are analyzed in relation to the described composition, the represented characters and their importance. They belong both to traditional artistic fields, such as painting, to modern ones, thus taking into account some of the most popular film representations on this topic.

The field of fine arts, inspired by the mythical-symbolic and religious context of biblical presentations, has proved great progress, dealing with religious themes and subjects with different manners of representation. In this context, the present study intends to offer significant guide marks, of this religious, mythical, symbolic and artistic symbiosis.

By selecting some of the most representative artistic creations of this period, this study treats the idea of religiousness transmitted by art. Thus there are analyzed some of the main issues that the artists of the last century based their creations on, issues that marked a certain separation, already experienced by the previous periods in the field of arts and Church. Regarding artistic achievements, the 20th century meant a permanent attempt to replace past expressions, knowing the affirmation of a great variety of artistic trends and guidelines, which, in spite of the more intense process of laicization of society, nevertheless continued to assure a special space and interest to religious themes, although very different from the ones in any periods of the history of arts.

Religion and art, throughout all civilizations of history, had various common features (the symbolic expression ways and the visualization expressive capacities of art). In such circumstances, the visual representations of the sacred experienced, from one civilization to another, different evolutions, which gave birth to some issues, which could not find yet a full elucidation. The understanding and representation differences common to every culture led to a diversity of specific terms concerning the intermingling of art and religion. Thus, at present, there are known expressions such as sacred art, religious art, church art, art with religious topic, divine art, laic art, profane art, etc. Yet, most of the times, this multitude of denominations is the one triggering major confusions concerning their meanings and confines. This study will focus on the notions related to sacred art and to religious art, which actually determine the most frequent confusions, since they apparently contain the same significances.
