Mr. Shakhawat is a sociologist, researcher and development practitioner. He completed his Masters in Sociology from Chittagong University in 1994. He studied in University of Wales, Swansea, UK and International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), Philippines as a short course fellow on “Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation” in 1998 and 2001. His overseas experience includes over six month’s experience in United Kingdom and Philippines.

In 2001, he joined the research organization Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) after he had worked as the Program officer in, Program for Research on Poverty Alleviation (PRPA), Grameen Trust, founded by The Royal Netherland Development Fund. Before that he started his research career with national Non-governmental organization Gonoshahajjo Sangastha (GSS), as a team member at Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (RMEU).

He gathers experiences in the areas of teaching and training, development and network building; NGO and socio cultural development; project design and planning; organization development; gender and micro-credit. He was one of the key architects in developing civil society activism such as Bijoay Mela in chittagong, Local government Support group and the Shushikkha Andolon, a citizen initiative on local government and primary education. He also created a new approach to knowledge dissemination session which is known as Gayanmela i.e. knowledge fair.

In addition, Shakhawat had developed research and training programs; identified local consultants and formulated their terms of reference, briefed and debriefed consultants; and monitored and evaluated projects for the PPRC, PRPA, GSS, etc. He had been responsible for writing research and administrative reports on projects’ progress, prepared and monitored budgets. Shakhawat also worked for development partners, DFID, World Bank, Sida, Swiss Embassy, Netherlands Embassy and Canadian High Commission and International NGOs Actionaid, Save the Children, Plan International and NETZ Bangladesh.

As a sociologist, Shakhawat has a thorough and deep understanding on cultural, political, economic and social issues of Bangladesh and South Asia. Shakhawat has published 9 articles in national level journals and chapters in books. He has written more than 14 research and evaluation reports on Education, development, technology, NGOs in development, fundamentalism, gender, Governance, etc. Shakhawat has published 5 Bangla books and 6 articles in national Journal and dailies.
