The aim of this study is to compare how Willa and Edwin Muir, Stanley Corngold and Joyce Crick have solved the issue of equivalence while translating Franz Kafka´s The Metamorphosis from German into English exemplified on the non-equivalence words “ungeheuer”, “Ungeziefer”, “möbelerschütternd” and “Donnerwetter”. The strategies used by the translators to translate the chosen non-equivalence words will be identified, the translations will be compared to each other and the original version and the quality of the translations will be evaluated in terms of how well they convey the meaning of the original. Additionally, the difficulties translators are faced with when translating works of Franz Kafka will be addressed.

The topic of this study is the language situation of third-generation Turkish immigrants in Germa... more The topic of this study is the language situation of third-generation Turkish immigrants in Germany with a focus on heritage language maintenance, language shift, language choice, and attitude. Third generation Turkish immigrants will fill out a questionnaire where they will be answering questions regarding their extent of language use of Turkish and German, their language proficiency in each language, the domains in which they use Turkish or German, their attitudes towards the two languages, and the factors that support the use of either language.

One question that is related to the field of second language acquisition is what role the first l... more One question that is related to the field of second language acquisition is what role the first language (L1) plays in the acquisition of a second language (L2). Some linguists claim that errors the learners make are because of the interference of their mother tongue, while others do not agree with this. Fact is, that the errors made are not random, but systematical. Like all foreign language learners that were not exposed to the language before the age of three, native speakers of Arabic and Turkish have an accent when speaking English. There is a consistent pattern of mistakes in their speech, which will be examined more detailed in the following.

Crusoe, with a focus on 1. how both novels carry characteristics of early novels and 2. the colonial and racist instances present in both novels which are the renaming of slaves, the characterization of natives as "noble savages" for looking like and being educated by Europeans, the depiction of natives as savages who have to be feared, the fact that English becomes the dominant language used for communication with the natives and that slavery does not get criticized but seen as a natural and necessary part of life. Even though Oroonoko has been read by many as a work of the abolitionist movement, a detailed reading of the novel shows that at its core, it is still a novel that justifies and reinforces colonialism and slavery.

In the following, these periods will be commented on with a focus on historical, cultural, political, economic, and social changes. The literature of each period will be discussed and important authors, their works, dominant genres, and examples will be given.

At the surface, the movie Avatar seems to be sending an anti-colonialist message by depicting the... more At the surface, the movie Avatar seems to be sending an anti-colonialist message by depicting the humans as the “bad guys” and celebrating their defeat at the end. Under this seemingly anti-colonialist surface, there are colonialist and orientalist tendencies that can be seen in the orientalist depiction and othering of the Na´vi people and their home, the character development of Jake Sully, the treatment of Pandora as a scientific study and the fact that the Na´vi people do not represent themselves. In the following, these orientalist elements of the movie will be discussed further.
