Registrations are OPEN - Feast for Freedom 2025 - Celebrate What Unites Us (original) (raw)
Host a Feast for Freedom event and stand with people seeking asylum. Feast for Freedom is a celebration of what unites us and an acknowledgment of the contribution refugees bring to Australia’s food and culture. It is an opportunity for the community to gather around a shared table in support of refugees and people seeking asylum, while raising vital funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC). Held annually across Australia, this campaign of the ASRC invites people to host fundraisers centred around cooking and eating together. Now in its seventh year, the 2025 Feast for Freedom is open for registrationsuntil March 31, with events to be held by April 30. Feast for Freedom hosts can cook recipes gifted by refugees or organise a shared table where guests – family, friends, colleagues – bring their favourite dishes to enjoy together. Whether at home, school, work or within a community group, it’s all about coming together over food, creating connections and making lasting memories. Guests are invited to make a donation to the ASRC, an independent not-for-profit organisation that supports and empowers people seeking asylum. The funds raised will enable the ASRC to provide food, shelter, healthcare and other vital services to over 7,000 people seeking asylum every year. Since 2019, more than 4,500 people across Australia have hosted a Feast for Freedom raising over $2 million. How does it work? After registering at feastforfreedom.org.au, hosts will receive a free Host Kit with recipes gifted by refugee cooks. This year, Jane, a Malaysian Tamil with Indian roots, shares her family’s Indian dishes, while Lidys and Jose, from Colombia, offer Caribbean flavours. Their recipes are accompanied by their personal stories of seeking asylum, and the cooks have been remunerated for their contributions. Jane explains, “Food means love for me, cooking food is the way we show love. I think people will enjoy cooking my recipes. They are very beautiful recipes and colourful as well.” Jose reminisces, “When I cook, I can remember a different place in my country, I remember my culture and my family. When we cook Colombian food, we can remember our country because this food has different components of our culture.” We are also thrilled to introduce two special guests this year: chef and Feast for Freedom Ambassador Kishwar Chowdhury (MasterChef Australia) and Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM, ASRC’s CEO and Founder. Both share a deep passion for food as a vehicle for cultural storytelling and bringing people together. Their Bangladeshi and Greek recipes add even more variety to help hosts cook up a storm from around the world. This year’s Feast for Freedom artwork is by Tareq Harara, a multidisciplinary artist and refugee from Gaza, Palestine. Tareq’s artwork draws inspiration from the Colombian and Indian dishes featured in this year’s campaign. Accessible and budget-friendly We believe that good food doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Many of this year’s Feast for Freedom recipes use simple, affordable ingredients, ensuring that everyone can participate. Why host a Feast for Freedom? A Feast for Freedom is more than just a meal; it’s about coming together and standing with refugees and people seeking asylum. Since 2001 the ASRC has been championing the rights of people seeking asylum and mobilising a community of compassion. With a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, the ASRC is Australia’s largest human rights organisation, providing wellbeing services and holistic programs to more than 7,000 people seeking asylum every year.
