The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of parent-involved reading activities on eleme... more The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of parent-involved reading activities on elementary fourth graders’ reading comprehension skills, reading motivation, and attitudes towards reading. Employing a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with a paired control group, data were collected from a total of 100 fourth graders studying in two different primary schools. The findings showed that there were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group, meaning that the parent-involved reading activities developed by the researchers had a positive effect on the students’ reading comprehension, reading motivation, and attitudes towards reading. This research contributed to previous body of research regarding the impact of family involvement on academic achievement and affective factors. Various suggestions were offered to policymakers, researchers and practitioners.

This study aims to determine the effect/contribution of the use of the jigsaw technique in the te... more This study aims to determine the effect/contribution of the use of the jigsaw technique in the teaching of punctuation marks in mother tongue education on/to the academic improvement of students. The functionality of reading, speaking and writing skills falling within the understanding and expression domains of learning is dependent upon the proper use of punctuation marks so as to strengthen the meaning. Use of tone, stress, gesture and mimics which are effective in speaking enhances the effectiveness of the speech. Just as nonverbal behaviors are instrumental to rendering speech effective and making meaning and expression richer, the ability to express/understand the exact feeling and thoughts which are intended to be conveyed in reading and writing is dependent upon the use of punctuation marks by assigning them functions for different purposes. To that end, answers have been sought to the question how punctuation marks could be better taught in mother tongue education at primary education level. The jigsaw teaching technique, a contemporary teaching method, has been set to work in the teaching process. The study universe is consisted of a primary school in central Erzurum during the first semester of school year 2009-2010. The sample consists of two branches from the 4 th grade that were selected using random sampling method, one serving as the study group, the other as the control group. The results of the study revealed that the jigsaw technique was superior to traditional teaching methods in the teaching of punctuation marks.

The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between pre-service teacher"s socia... more The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between pre-service teacher"s social value perceptions and their life satisfaction. In addition, it has been examined whether teacher candidates differ in terms of social value perceptions and life satisfaction in terms of gender, department, place of birth, family type, and income level. In the collection of data process, to measure social value perceptions of pre-service teachers "Multidimensional Social Value Scale", which is developed by Bolat (2013), is used. In order to measure life satisfaction of pre-service teachers "Life Satisfaction Scale", which is developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin (1985) that translated into Turkish by Köker (1991) is used. The sample of the study consist of total 400 pre-service teachers studying in the department of classroom teacher education, Turkish language teacher education, preschool teacher education, social studies teacher education and science teacher education at Faculty of Education Muş Alparslan University. Research shows that, there is high positive correlation between the level of life satisfaction of preservice teachers and their social value perceptions.
Türkçe tarih sahnesine çıktığı andan itibaren çeşitli sebepler neticesinde birçok dili etkilemiş ... more Türkçe tarih sahnesine çıktığı andan itibaren çeşitli sebepler neticesinde birçok dili etkilemiş ve aynı şekilde birçok dilden de etkilenmiştir. Bunu daha iyi anlayabilmemiz için yakın tarihimize bakmamız yeterli olacaktır. Selçuklu ve Osmanlı dönemlerinde Arapça ve Farsça etkisi altında kalan Türkçe, Tanzimat'la birlikte Batılı dillerin etkisinde kalmıştır. Günümüzde bu Batılı dillerden en etkili olanı ise İngilizcedir. Son dönemlerde İngilizceden Türkçeye hızlı bir şekilde kelime akışı yaşandığını görmekteyiz. Bu akışı kolaylaştıran ve hızlandıran en büyük etken ise genel ağ (internet) ortamıdır. Bilgi paylaşımını hızlandıran ve kolaylaştıran internet, yine özellikle İngilizceden diğer dillere kelime akışını hızlandıran bir ortam olmuştur. Internet tutkunları, özellikle gençler, msn ve çet (chat) programlarındaki yazışmalarında yeni bir dil ortaya çıkardı. Bu dilin muhtevasını kısaltmalar ve birtakım ifadeler oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, gençlerin ortaya çıkardığı bu dilin Türkçe üzerine etkilerini irdelemektir. Çalışmanın sonucunda Türkçenin ilerisi için ciddi bir dil yozlaşması tehlikesiyle karşı karşıya olduğu görülmüştür.

In recent years, the works devoted to the mechanisms and specific features of scientific activity... more In recent years, the works devoted to the mechanisms and specific features of scientific activity has described either the requirements for the personality of a scientist or the characteristics of the scientific activity itself and its' considerable result, but the specific individual psychological characteristics that ensure the successful performance of scientific activity have never been determined. In order to "make" this sphere achievable and accessible, we proposed to study the first substantive steps in a research career, starting with the first university courses and up to the stage of the most successful students-researchers who entered postgraduate studies, defended their PhD theses and became professional scientists. This approach allows us to trace the stages of professional development of the scientist's personality on the way to the scientific result and to consider his/her individual psychological indicators as "internal reserves" which considered to be the basis for the self-efficacy of scientific activity. In our study we based on the theoretical and methodological Russian psychology approaches of such authors as: Klimov (1996), Peisahov (1991), Ponomarev (1960), Rubinstein (2002), and there were four stages of research activity development identified: the stage of selection, the stage of adaptation, the stage of internality, the stage of mastery.

The purpose of this study is to define the learning styles of Turkish teacher candidates under a ... more The purpose of this study is to define the learning styles of Turkish teacher candidates under a sum of six different learning styles in three basic dimensions and to set forth which learning styles are dominant. In the study, the screening model which is a quantitative research method has been used to determine the opinions of fourth grade primary school teaching department students about teaching elementary literacy. The study population is comprised of candidate students studying at Atatürk University, Kâzım Karabekir Education Faculty, whereas the sample is comprised of 349 students studying at Turkish teaching department. The scale consisting of sixty articles measures six learning styles. These sixty articles have been divided into sets of 10 articles such that each set contains statements designed to identify dependent, independent, participatory learning, passive, cooperative, and competitive learning styles, respectively. In the analysis of data, frequency and percentage which are descriptive statistical techniques have been used. The researches carried out show that students do not have a single learning style, may have more than one learning style at the same time, and one of them is the dominant learning style

Bu arastirmanin amaci, yaratici drama etkinliklerinin ilkokul 4. sinif ogrencilerinin yaraticilik... more Bu arastirmanin amaci, yaratici drama etkinliklerinin ilkokul 4. sinif ogrencilerinin yaraticilik becerilerinin gelisimine etkisini incelemektir. Arastirmada on test- son test kontrol gruplu deneysel desen kullanilmistir. Calisma gurubunu Erzurum’da bulunan Aydin Dogan Ilkogretim Okulu 4-A ve 4-B sinif ogrencileri olusturmaktadir. Calisma grubunda 17 kontrol, 17 deney olmak uzere 34 ogrenci yer almistir. Veri toplama araci olarak 1977’de Raudsepp tarafindan gelistirilen ve Coban (1999) tarafindan Turkceye uyarlanan “Ne Kadar Yaraticisiniz?” olcegi kullanilmistir. Verilerin analizinde 18.0 paket programindan faydalanilarak frekans ve yuzde degerleri, parametrik testlerden bagimsiz gruplarda t- testi ve One Way ANOVA, nonparametrik testlerden Mann Whitney U Testi kullanilmistir. Istatistiksel sonuclarin anlamliligi %95 guven araliginda p<0,5 duzeyinde incelenmistir. Arastirmanin sonunda yaratici drama etkinliklerinin ogrencilerin yaraticilik duzeyleri uzerinde olumlu etki yaptigi; cinsiyet, anne-babanin egitim ve gelir duzeyi acisindan yaraticilik duzeylerinin anlamli bir farklilik gostermedigi anlasilmistir.

This study aims to determine the level of consistency between the text exercises included in the ... more This study aims to determine the level of consistency between the text exercises included in the workbooks for fourth and fifth grade in primary education with the critical thinking skill. The document examination method, a qualitative research method, was employed in the study. Target population of the study is comprised of Turkish Language course books studied in 4 th and 5 th grade in primary education in the province of Erzurum in the educational year of 2010-2011. Books examined in the study 4 th and 5 th grade Turkish Language workbooks published by two different publishing houses selected by simple random sampling from among publishing houses determined by the Provincial Directorate of National Education in Erzurum. Data obtained were analyzed by content analysis method. According to the findings obtained in the study, 322 out of 458 activities included in fourth and fifth grade Turkish Language workbooks are in consistency with gains of critical thinking skill.

Primary education is the most important step where basic knowledge and skills are gained. Sound foundations in this stage will play an important role in one's lifetime achievements. In our age, where everything changes and develops with great speed, individuals; who can adapt to this speed, think, question, criticize, create solutions, always look forward, create multiple points of view, express his/her emotions independently, use his/her language effectively; are needed. There are two dimensions of language; understanding and expression. Speaking and writing is the dimension of expression; listening and reading is the dimension of understanding. Writing is an activity which develops later than reading. For the healthy development of writing skill in the manner our age requires, a versatile support is needed. Curriculum, teacher, family, books, especially the textbooks used in mother tongue lessons have important responsibilities in order to have the student express his/her emotions, thoughts, dreams independently. The reason is that books play an important role in the development of both oral and written expression skills. Are books being prepared in a way to fulfill this important responsibility they undertake? In this descriptive research, the sections and instructions of texts on written expression, included in Turkish Language textbooks (6-8) studied in school in Turkey during 2009-2010 education year. The data of the research have been gathered by document examination method, among qualitative research methods. A total of 638 activities and instructions in Turkish Language textbooks have been reviewed separately; the activities and instructions are evaluated according to our purpose. Direct quotations were taken and interpreted from the examined texts by presenting the findings with frequencies in tables.

Study group of this research is comprised of students from Classroom Teaching and Turkish Teaching Departments of Faculty of Education of Atatürk University. Answers were sought for the level of classroom teaching and preschool teacher candidates' towards children's literature lesson, and works of children's literature, and whether there is any significant difference is seen in classroom teaching and preschool teacher candidates' towards children's literature lesson, and works of children's literature in terms gender, and departments. Having the research conducted according to survey method (2007), "Attitude Scale towards Children's Literature, and Children's Literature Lesson", having been developed by …, and comprised of 35 articles, was made use of. At the end of the research, it was concluded that teacher candidates had developed a positive attitude towards children's literature, and children's literature lesson, and neither gender, nor field differences had significantly affected that attitude.

The purpose of this research is to put forward the status and opinions of Turkish Language Teachi... more The purpose of this research is to put forward the status and opinions of Turkish Language Teaching students on basic language skills. In this research, using the opinions of 235 students of Turkish Language Teaching during 2009-2010 year of education, a survey form consisting of six questions was used as a data collecting tool. The collected data was resolved by using descriptive analysis technique, and the achieved findings are presented numerically. In light of the achieved findings; the results are that speaking is in the first rank of the most important category of the four basic language skills, that 56.60% the students perceive themselves to be insufficient in the subject of using it, that speaking is the first and writing is the last of these skills in being used in daily life, listening is the first and writing is the last of these skills in being used in classroom, that reading is the first among the reasons for the lack of using basic language skills, that the second reason is the lessons in the program not reinforcing these skills, that then comes the lack of effort, and that the last of these reasons is educators not providing the environment to reinforce these skills in the classroom.

It is a new topic in the area of investigation in Turkey. Also, the need of it for developing awareness for Turkish language has been explained. The purpose to develop awareness for the true usage of the Turkish language in the Mass Media where we often witness misusages. The possible remedies are mentioned. In the research, "the investigation of documents" method has been used which is one of the qualitative research methods. The literature search has been done through local and global sources. Primarily, the Media Literacy concept has been elucidated, then, the global and local (in Turkey) practices of Media Literacy has been mentioned. The issue of "How should be the education of Media Literacy?" has been elaborated and the importance of Media Literacy for developing awareness towards Turkish language has been emphasized.

The document examination method, a qualitative research method, was employed in the research. Giving information on the general structure, and content of Turkish language teaching program (6-7-8), gains there from were reviewed. These gains were classified under the titles of critical thinking skills. In the reviewed Turkish language teaching program (6-7-8), 158 gains among the total of 228 under the fields of "reading, listening/following, speaking, writing, learning, and grammar" were found to be intended for critical thinking skills. It was further ascertained that, these gains were intended more for "application" and "analyzing" skills than those of critical thinking.

In this research, where the opinions of 390 students studying at the Faculty of Education, Classroom Teaching Department during 2009-2010 educational year are taken, "Scale of attitude towards oral expression and towards the lesson of oral expression" used as data collecting tool. The findings are presented numerically. In light of the achieved findings, the reached result is that classroom teacher candidates have positive attitudes towards oral expression and towards the lesson of oral expression, and that the results do not differ according to gender.

The purpose of this research is to determine the opinions of the students of the Department of Tu... more The purpose of this research is to determine the opinions of the students of the Department of Turkish Language Teaching on the statuses of teachers' usage of basic language skills and on the lessons in the curriculum. In this research opinions of 235 students, attending to the Department of Education of Turkish Language during 2009-2010 were taken and a survey form, consisting of four questions was used as a data collection instrument. The gathered data were analyzed by using the technique of descriptive analysis and the findings were presented numerically. In light of the findings; we see that teacher candidates find teachers very sufficient in listening skill, insufficient in writing skill, that teachers use speaking skill most in the lessons; tell that the lessons in bachelor's degree program do not support basic language skills, and they emphasized that critical reading, creative writing, effective speaking lessons should be included in the program and their hours should be increased.

This study was conducted in order to determine the relation between the critical thinking levels ... more This study was conducted in order to determine the relation between the critical thinking levels of 5 th grade students in primary education and their success in Turkish Language course. The study was conducted in line with the relational scanning model. Target population of the study comprised primary education 5th grade students studying in the province of Erzurum. And the sample group comprised 610 students selected by convenience sampling from the counties of Palandöken and Yakutiye. Critical Thinking Scale developed by Demir (2006) was used in the study. In data analysis, by means of SPSS 17.0 software package, frequencies, arithmetic mean, standard deviation levels and, for the correlation between critical thinking levels and Turkish Language course success, correlation analysis were used. In conclusion of the study, it was determined that the criticial thinking levels of students were high and there was a positive correlation between critical thinking levels and success in the Turkish Language course.

This study aims to determine the effect of the worksheet which is prepared after 5E learning cycl... more This study aims to determine the effect of the worksheet which is prepared after 5E learning cycle model concerning the teaching of the subject of adjectives as grammatical components on the success of the student. Combined research method where quantitative and qualitative research patterns are used in conjunction. Semi-experimental pattern with pretest-endtest control group was used for the quantitative aspect of the study for the qualitative aspect of which phenomenology pattern was used. Control group of the study consists of 56 sixth-grade students from Erzurum 23rd July Primary School in the educational year of 2010-2011. Data of the study were obtained using the success test prepared for the subject of adjectives and the interview form questioning the students' opinion on the work process. While predictive statistical tests were used in the analysis of quantitative data, content analysis technique was used to analyze the qualitative data. In conclusion of the study, it was understood that the worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model increased student's success, that the students preferred the lessons performed with worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model and they were not bored in these lessons.

Veri toplama araci olarak 1977’de Raudsepp tarafindan gelistirilen ve Coban (1999) tarafindan Turkceye uyarlanan “Ne Kadar Yaraticisiniz?” olcegi kullanilmistir. Verilerin analizinde 18.0 paket programindan faydalanilarak frekans ve yuzde degerleri, parametrik testlerden bagimsiz gruplarda t- testi ve One Way ANOVA, nonparametrik testlerden Mann Whitney U Testi kullanilmistir. Istatistiksel sonuclarin anlamliligi %95 guven araliginda p<0,5 duzeyinde incelenmistir. Arastirmanin sonunda yaratici drama etkinliklerinin ogrencilerin yaraticilik duzeyleri uzerinde olumlu etki yaptigi; cinsiyet, anne-babanin egitim ve gelir duzeyi acisindan yaraticilik duzeylerinin anlamli bir farklilik gostermedigi anlasilmistir.

This study aims to determine the level of consistency between the text exercises included in the ... more This study aims to determine the level of consistency between the text exercises included in the workbooks for fourth and fifth grade in primary education with the critical thinking skill. The document examination method, a qualitative research method, was employed in the study. Target population of the study is comprised of Turkish Language course books studied in 4 th and 5 th grade in primary education in the province of Erzurum in the educational year of 2010-2011. Books examined in the study 4 th and 5 th grade Turkish Language workbooks published by two different publishing houses selected by simple random sampling from among publishing houses determined by the Provincial Directorate of National Education in Erzurum. Data obtained were analyzed by content analysis method. According to the findings obtained in the study, 322 out of 458 activities included in fourth and fifth grade Turkish Language workbooks are in consistency with gains of critical thinking skill.

Primary education is the most important step where basic knowledge and skills are gained. Sound foundations in this stage will play an important role in one's lifetime achievements. In our age, where everything changes and develops with great speed, individuals; who can adapt to this speed, think, question, criticize, create solutions, always look forward, create multiple points of view, express his/her emotions independently, use his/her language effectively; are needed. There are two dimensions of language; understanding and expression. Speaking and writing is the dimension of expression; listening and reading is the dimension of understanding. Writing is an activity which develops later than reading. For the healthy development of writing skill in the manner our age requires, a versatile support is needed. Curriculum, teacher, family, books, especially the textbooks used in mother tongue lessons have important responsibilities in order to have the student express his/her emotions, thoughts, dreams independently. The reason is that books play an important role in the development of both oral and written expression skills. Are books being prepared in a way to fulfill this important responsibility they undertake? In this descriptive research, the sections and instructions of texts on written expression, included in Turkish Language textbooks (6-8) studied in school in Turkey during 2009-2010 education year. The data of the research have been gathered by document examination method, among qualitative research methods. A total of 638 activities and instructions in Turkish Language textbooks have been reviewed separately; the activities and instructions are evaluated according to our purpose. Direct quotations were taken and interpreted from the examined texts by presenting the findings with frequencies in tables.

Study group of this research is comprised of students from Classroom Teaching and Turkish Teaching Departments of Faculty of Education of Atatürk University. Answers were sought for the level of classroom teaching and preschool teacher candidates' towards children's literature lesson, and works of children's literature, and whether there is any significant difference is seen in classroom teaching and preschool teacher candidates' towards children's literature lesson, and works of children's literature in terms gender, and departments. Having the research conducted according to survey method (2007), "Attitude Scale towards Children's Literature, and Children's Literature Lesson", having been developed by …, and comprised of 35 articles, was made use of. At the end of the research, it was concluded that teacher candidates had developed a positive attitude towards children's literature, and children's literature lesson, and neither gender, nor field differences had significantly affected that attitude.

The purpose of this research is to put forward the status and opinions of Turkish Language Teachi... more The purpose of this research is to put forward the status and opinions of Turkish Language Teaching students on basic language skills. In this research, using the opinions of 235 students of Turkish Language Teaching during 2009-2010 year of education, a survey form consisting of six questions was used as a data collecting tool. The collected data was resolved by using descriptive analysis technique, and the achieved findings are presented numerically. In light of the achieved findings; the results are that speaking is in the first rank of the most important category of the four basic language skills, that 56.60% the students perceive themselves to be insufficient in the subject of using it, that speaking is the first and writing is the last of these skills in being used in daily life, listening is the first and writing is the last of these skills in being used in classroom, that reading is the first among the reasons for the lack of using basic language skills, that the second reason is the lessons in the program not reinforcing these skills, that then comes the lack of effort, and that the last of these reasons is educators not providing the environment to reinforce these skills in the classroom.

It is a new topic in the area of investigation in Turkey. Also, the need of it for developing awareness for Turkish language has been explained. The purpose to develop awareness for the true usage of the Turkish language in the Mass Media where we often witness misusages. The possible remedies are mentioned. In the research, "the investigation of documents" method has been used which is one of the qualitative research methods. The literature search has been done through local and global sources. Primarily, the Media Literacy concept has been elucidated, then, the global and local (in Turkey) practices of Media Literacy has been mentioned. The issue of "How should be the education of Media Literacy?" has been elaborated and the importance of Media Literacy for developing awareness towards Turkish language has been emphasized.

The document examination method, a qualitative research method, was employed in the research. Giving information on the general structure, and content of Turkish language teaching program (6-7-8), gains there from were reviewed. These gains were classified under the titles of critical thinking skills. In the reviewed Turkish language teaching program (6-7-8), 158 gains among the total of 228 under the fields of "reading, listening/following, speaking, writing, learning, and grammar" were found to be intended for critical thinking skills. It was further ascertained that, these gains were intended more for "application" and "analyzing" skills than those of critical thinking.

In this research, where the opinions of 390 students studying at the Faculty of Education, Classroom Teaching Department during 2009-2010 educational year are taken, "Scale of attitude towards oral expression and towards the lesson of oral expression" used as data collecting tool. The findings are presented numerically. In light of the achieved findings, the reached result is that classroom teacher candidates have positive attitudes towards oral expression and towards the lesson of oral expression, and that the results do not differ according to gender.

In this research opinions of 235 students, attending to the Department of Education of Turkish Language during 2009-2010 were taken and a survey form, consisting of four questions was used as a data collection instrument. The gathered data were analyzed by using the technique of descriptive analysis and the findings were presented numerically. In light of the findings; we see that teacher candidates find teachers very sufficient in listening skill, insufficient in writing skill, that teachers use speaking skill most in the lessons; tell that the lessons in bachelor's degree program do not support basic language skills, and they emphasized that critical reading, creative writing, effective speaking lessons should be included in the program and their hours should be increased.

The study was conducted in line with the relational scanning model. Target population of the study comprised primary education 5th grade students studying in the province of Erzurum. And the sample group comprised 610 students selected by convenience sampling from the counties of Palandöken and Yakutiye. Critical Thinking Scale developed by Demir (2006) was used in the study. In data analysis, by means of SPSS 17.0 software package, frequencies, arithmetic mean, standard deviation levels and, for the correlation between critical thinking levels and Turkish Language course success, correlation analysis were used. In conclusion of the study, it was determined that the criticial thinking levels of students were high and there was a positive correlation between critical thinking levels and success in the Turkish Language course.

This study aims to determine the effect of the worksheet which is prepared after 5E learning cycl... more This study aims to determine the effect of the worksheet which is prepared after 5E learning cycle model concerning the teaching of the subject of adjectives as grammatical components on the success of the student. Combined research method where quantitative and qualitative research patterns are used in conjunction. Semi-experimental pattern with pretest-endtest control group was used for the quantitative aspect of the study for the qualitative aspect of which phenomenology pattern was used. Control group of the study consists of 56 sixth-grade students from Erzurum 23rd July Primary School in the educational year of 2010-2011. Data of the study were obtained using the success test prepared for the subject of adjectives and the interview form questioning the students' opinion on the work process. While predictive statistical tests were used in the analysis of quantitative data, content analysis technique was used to analyze the qualitative data. In conclusion of the study, it was understood that the worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model increased student's success, that the students preferred the lessons performed with worksheets prepared according to 5E learning cycle model and they were not bored in these lessons.
