Biographical history
Friedrich (Frederick) Salomon Perls, better known as Fritz Perls, was a noted German-born psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Perls coined the term 'Gestalt therapy' to identify the form of psychotherapy that he developed with his wife, Laura Perls, in the 1940s and 1950s. Perls became associated with the Esalen Institute in 1964, and he lived there until 1969, when he started a Gestalt training community at Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island, Canada. He died in 1970.
Custodial history
Records were in the custody of the Estate of Dr. Norman Hirt prior to their acquisition by Simon Fraser University Library Special Collections and Rare Books in 2003. Hirt was president of Aquarian Productions Limited, which produced two film series entitled Gestalt Sessions with Fritz Perls, directed by Stanley Fox. Dr. Hirt was an associate of Fritz Perls while Perls was working on establishing a Gestalt training community at Lake Cowichan, B.C.
Scope and content
Collection consists of 16 mm film, transcripts, master audio recordings and audio cassettes. These records form part of the production elements used by Stanley Fox and Aquarian Productions to produce Series Two of Gestalt Sessions with Fritz Perls, filmed in 1969 and edited in 1972. Films are introduced by Dr. Karl. E. Humiston, and record psychotherapy sessions between Perls and volunteer patients that took place over five days and 55 hours in 1969.
