- Many people would attest to how important a cup of coffee is to their morning routine - but we’re not here to talk to you about how much we like coffee - but we don't mind if you send us a virtual coffee meet-up and we can talk about it there! ☕ What we are here to talk about are some of the not-so-talked-about social issues relating to coffee that should be on the radar of finance professionals. Supply chain transparency Coffee production generally involves fairly complex, global supply chains involving million of smallholder farmers. Unfortunately, only 20-30% of coffee is produced sustainably (Sustainable coffee challenge). 40% of the world’s coffee production comes from Brazil and Vietnam, which both have environmental and labour challenges (US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS). Finance professionals need to ensure the companies they support or work with are using ethical sourcing practices and trace their supply chains to avoid risks like deforestation and unethical labour. Investing in organisations like Root Capital, which provides loans to smallholder coffee cooperatives, can enhance supply chain stability and foster sustainable practices. (Case study from: https://lnkd.in/g66qK7t4) Human rights and labour About 160 million children are engaged in child labour worldwide, including the coffee industry (International Labour Organization). Allegations of slave labour have impacted investment portfolios, and will continue to into the future, meaning investors must be proactive in engaging companies on such issues. If you're raising a cup of coffee today, raise it to celebrate coffee and reflect on how we can align our investments with ethical, sustainable practices in the industry! Resources mentioned in the brief relating to supply chain transparency, and human rights & labour:https://lnkd.in/guz5SDM5 https://lnkd.in/gp5kpgCa #sustainablefinance #sustainableinvesting #internationalcoffeeday

Today is the official launch of the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) Nature Working Group Nature Investor Toolkit. Why should investors pay attention to nature? Aside from the obvious, it is estimated by the World Economic Forum that approximately US$44 trillion of economic value (more than half global gross domestic product) is “moderately” or “highly” dependent on nature. The toolkit is a handy source document to help educate investors on how to uncover and analyse nature-related risks and opportunities as well as prepare investors to hold conversation with portfolio companies about how they impact on nature in their operations and products and services and how they depend on nature to do what they do. As someone who is new to the space of analysing the financial and investment implications of nature, it was such a pleasure for me to learn more by playing a role in this toolkit. I can guarantee that this toolkit offers practical, targeted information to help almost every investor arm themselves with knowledge. I urge you to download this document, and access the appendix developed in conjunction with Altiorem for fantastic guide to further research and guidance.https://lnkd.in/gs58z3MC Claire Molinari Joanne Lee, CFA Julia Leske Olivia Back Madeline Combe Mayleah House Ella Robinson Terina Williams Sophie Leitch Emily Davies Max Dalton Greg Munford Timothy King, CFA Fiona Manning Nayanisha Samarakoon Estelle Parker Dean Hegarty Jessica Rowe -

What effects have standards had in the market? During the 'Aligning value with values: Standards across borders' session Pablo Berrutti, Senior Director, Portfolio Specialist at Stewart Investors said that “It's elevated the discussion; it’s allowed for senior levels and government structures to evolve to be able to incorporate these issues... as soon as you put things into the public domain, it turns into a different kind of incentive for organisations.” Thank you to Pablo, Helen Skinner, Head of Responsible Investment I Investment Management at ANZ New Zealand Investments Limited, Greg Liddell, Director Responsible Investments of Betashares and moderator Shalini Samuel, Head of Certification at Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) for this insightful discussion on how investors can navigate the fast-moving landscape of evolving mandatory and voluntary standards in sustainable finance.#RIAAconf2024 #responsibleinvestment📸 Alisha Lovrich
