We fuel Australian LGBTIQ+ organisations in their work towards equality and better outcomes for the LGBTIQ+ community.
About us
The Aurora Group fuels Australian LGBTIQ+ organisations in their work towards equality and better outcomes for the most marginalised people within the LGBTIQ+ community, and advocates for crucial change to attract more essential philanthropic funding to this sector. Aurora is community-led, and through a long-standing grants program, has provided more than $1.2million to grassroots organisations addressing the needs of the LGBTIQ+ people who need it the most, and supporting them to build organisational capacity. Aurora also organises unique fundraising events of celebration such as the Annual Aurora Ball, which are important moments that not only raise funds, but also showcase the generosity, diversity and resilience of our community 🌈

- 🎉 Last night, Aurora was honoured with the prestigious 🌈 Community Organisation Award 🌈 at the ACON Honour Awards! This recognition is a testament to our mission of empowering LGBTIQ+ communities through philanthropy. For over 25 years, we've backed community-led initiatives—and we have exciting plans for the future. We're changing that, and YOU can help. As our incredible Chair Sam Turner (she/they) shared: since launching the Amplify Pride Fund just 2 years ago, we've already invested nearly half a million dollars in the rainbow community. - It's the 16th of September and you know what that means!? It's officially #BiWeek !!! 🩷💜💙 Our beautiful bi community is booming! Did you know that bisexuality is the most common LGBTIQ+ sexuality for Millennials and Gen Zs? In fact, a study out of the US found that 15% of Gen Z-ers identify as bi making up 2/3 of those identifying LGBTIQ+ in their generation. If that wasn't enough, a recent Australian study found 1 in 3 Gen Z-ers identify as LGBTIQ+ with bisexuality once again being the most common sexuality! While we are seeing record numbers of bisexuality in the younger generations, which is definitely something to celebrate, we also need to remember that bi-erasure is still an everyday battle for many. So this week we encourage you to celebrate all the beautiful bi folk in your life, and to stand up and speak up against bi-erasure discrimination! - Just as this triennial of World Suicide Prevention Day is focusing on 'Changing the Narrative of Suicide' by normalising open conversations and reducing silence and stigma, the theme for R U OK? Day 2024 is 'Ask R U OK? Any Day'. Checking in with your loved ones and normalising open conversations is so important. However, it's just as if not more important that we check in with ourselves first. Before asking others 'R U OK?', ask yourself if you're in the position to support that conversation if they say 'no'. Asking someone if they're okay when you're not in a position to support them can lead them to experiencing further feelings of isolation. If you're not emotionally ready for a heavy conversation, or if you don't have the capacity today, remember you can ask R U OK? any day. Check in with those around you regularly, normalise the tough conversations, and make sure you're ready to have those tough conversations. [ID: yellow graphics with black text overlaid]
- Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day, and we know that LGBTIQ+ people have the highest rates of suicidality compared with any other population in Australia. Reducing stigma, normalising conversations about mental health difficulties, and fostering a culture of openness instead of silence and stigma can help prevent rates of suicide. As a community we know how hard it can be navigating the normal hurdles of life, yet also dealing with systemic homophobic barriers. Which is why it is vital that as a community we work together to support each other, empower each other, and work with each other to create systemic change. - Supporting the LGBTIQ+ community includes supporting the families of our community. Current Ignite Pride grantee, Queer Family, does just that! By running events Queer family reduce social isolation and improving mental health and wellbeing by creating safe spaces for LGBTIQ+ people and allies. "In 2019 research conducted at a community event in Mullumbimby revealed that vulnerable locals were slipping through the cracks and not receiving the support they needed. It was found that local LGBTQIA+ people were isolated, at risk, and starved of community connection... And thus, Queer Family was born!" - Trans Justice Project LTD. are launching a new anti-trans disinformation training for governments, businesses, and civil society groups. In recent years, we have seen a sharp rise in anti-trans disinformation, and increasingly sophisticated strategies to influence our media and decision makers. We know ahead of the next election that these attacks will only escalate. That’s why we are launching our brand new Anti-Trans Disinformation Training. This training will equip organisations, governments, and businesses with the skills to identify and combat the lies spread by the anti-trans lobby. It has been developed by a trans-led expert team, and can be delivered in-person in Sydney, or remotely over Zoom. Participants will receive valuable skills, resources, and information to help empower and inform their communities. By sharing these skills, we can empower our communities, and defeat the anti-trans lobby’s campaign of hate and fear. Help fight back by booking in a disinformation training for your workplace. - 💜HAPPY WEAR IT PURPLE DAY💜 Today is such an important day, as it's the day Australia comes together and demonstrates to young LGBTIQ+ people that they are supported, seen, celebrated and respected; to show them that they have the right to be proud of who they are! While it is of utmost importance to live and breathe this message every day to the young people around us, by coming together and wearing purple today, we are able to help amplify this message beyond those in our every day lives 💖🌈 [ID: purple graphic with white text and a photo of a femme person wearing purple]
