The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking feedback on preliminary findings for its Carbon Leakage Review. The second consultation paper details carbon leakage risks for specific commodities and additional policy options to tackle this issue. Feedback will help shape the final report, which will be submitted to the Australian Government by the end of 2024. The Carbon Leakage Review aims to assess the risks of carbon leakage, explore policy options to address it, and evaluate the feasibility of those options, including the possibility of a Border Carbon Adjustment. Carbon leakage refers to the shift of production from countries with stronger emissions reduction policies to those with weaker or no such policies, undermining global climate goals. In our submission last year, we advocated to include hydrogen, ammonia, and urea (or the best combination) in the carbon leakage risk list, and for advancing a carbon border adjustment mechanism. Submissions close Tuesday 3 December 2024. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/g65UtAi2 #H2Au -

The Australian Sustainable Finance Institute (ASFI) has opened the Second Public Consultation on the development of an Australian Sustainable Finance Taxonomy. ASFI is seeking feedback on climate change mitigation criteria for priority sectors, a Do No Significant Harm framework, minimum social safeguards, and how the taxonomy can be used effectively. This consultation aligns with AHC’s ongoing work with the ASFI Taxonomy Advisory Group on Manufacturing and Industry. This contribution is directly shaping the development of criteria that will help drive sustainable practices across the six identified priority sectors. First Nations people are also encouraged to provide feedback to ensure the taxonomy is developed inclusively and respectfully. The initial Australian taxonomy for climate mitigation will be delivered to the Government at the end of 2024. Submissions close Sunday 1 December 2024. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/gH9adTre.#H2Au - COP29 is underway in Baku and the global hydrogen industry is using this platform to call for decisive action on clean hydrogen. Alongside the Hydrogen Council, 18 industry leaders including the AHC have called for urgent action to scale demand for clean hydrogen by 2030 and unlock significant economic and societal benefits by mid-century. In an open letter supporting the COP29 Presidency's Hydrogen Declaration, we are calling on governments to make a collective commitment to scale demand for clean hydrogen and its derivatives by 2030, underpinned by robust incentives and mandates. - AHC member Pilot Energy Limited and Electriq Global have signed an MoU agreement to explore the deployment of Electriq’s proprietary hydrogen powder transport, storage and power generation technology for off-grid energy users. Pilot and Electriq are targeting the application of Electriq Powder and Electriq Release hydrogen to transport, storage and hydrogen-to-power technology, for remote, off-grid energy users in Mid West and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia, sourced from Pilot’s Mid West Clean Energy Project. Pilot Chairman Brad Lingo said: “The Mid West Clean Energy Project is ideally located to supply clean hydrogen to energy users in the Mid West and Gascoyne regions, and the application of Electriq’s technologies greatly simplifies the delivery, storage and use of hydrogen for these energy users.” We look forward to seeing more from this collaborative partnership! Pilot Energy and Electriq team up for new hydro tech theaustralian.com.au - The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has commenced the next phase of its National Hydrogen Regulatory Review, with consultation opening on draft technical and regulatory mapping for the first two priority Codes: Hydrogen Production and Refuelling. Consultation covers: 1. Facility Technical Mapping: designed to collectively agree a standardised understanding of the operating environment of production and refuelling facilities relevant to hydrogen regulatory frameworks. 2. Draft Regulator Matrix: snapshot of how relevant regulatory frameworks across Australia apply to hydrogen production and refuelling facilities. This latest phase of consultation builds on previous engagement, including co-design workshops undertaken a year ago. Please submit feedback by 11:59pm, Sunday, 8 December 2024. High calibre speakers and engaging topics provided valuable insights on the complex ports and shipping industry at Ports Australia's Biennial Conference last week in Tasmania! Conversations ranged from international trade and global affairs, to the innovative role of hydrogen as a feedstock for two key future shipping fuels: ammonia and methanol - which AHC CEO Fiona Simon spoke to in her session around future energy. It was great to hear from My Therese Blank, Head of Oceania Market at A.P. Moller - Maersk about how their organisation is viewing methanol in the maritime sector. We also heard from freight and shipping companies with a particularly engaging session on maximising Australia's supply chain efficiency with Christine Holgate at Team Global Express, Shane Walden at ANL and Wayne Johnson (GAICD) at ARTC. AHC is committed to collaborating across important sectors such as ports and maritime, and looks forward to continued engagement. #H2au -

AHC is in Hobart this week for the Ports Australia Conference! Held every two years, the conference brings together leaders from ports, maritime services, business, and government, creating a unique platform for collaboration and innovation. Ports are well-placed to act as an anchor to low carbon precincts, driving demand for low carbon fuels, technologies, vessels, as well as the establishment of the decarbonised supply chain locally, through export channels, and green shipping corridors. AHC continues to engage with the maritime industry, and has actively contributed to consultations this year including the Australian Government’s Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan (MERNAP). We were also delighted to attend Austrade’s first Southeast Asian Business Exchange mission focused on decarbonisation in the maritime industry earlier this year. CEO Fiona Simon will be joining the speaker line-up on Thursday to discuss future energy and ports. We are looking forward to sharing insights on energy and its crucial role in our ports.#H2Au - The Government of Western Australia has unveiled its Renewable Hydrogen Strategy 2024-2030, which aims to propel the renewable hydrogen industry forward with clear goals and actions. This strategy is built on three key pillars: production, use, and export of renewable hydrogen. Premier Roger Cook says: "Our refreshed strategy reflects the new landscape, with a major focus on using renewable hydrogen to produce the green materials the world needs to transition to net zero - like green ammonia and green iron." Key targets include facilitating land approvals for renewable energy projects by 2027 and collaborating with Aboriginal communities on a project by 2028. The strategy emphasises the need for advanced manufacturing and critical infrastructure. To achieve these objectives, it outlines priority actions such as supporting green ammonia, green metals, and critical minerals projects in Kwinana, Pilbara, Mid West, and South West. Additionally, it plans significant investments in hydrogen hubs and Strategic Industrial Areas, while also streamlining approval processes and enhancing partnerships both domestically and internationally. The full strategy can be found here: https://lnkd.in/g5K2-7X3 #H2Au
