- Finding the perfect biocontrol match. 🌱 Biocontrol harnesses the power of natural enemies of weeds. Our biocontrol researchers test to find out whether targeted biocontrol agents are going to only affect the right species, and aren't a threat to similar native species. Harnessing the power of natural enemies and then subjecting them to rigorous scientific screening is critical. It ensures our biocontrol agents are safe, targeted and studied in depth. They then go through stringent regulatory approvals before being released in the Australian environment. Find out more about our biocontrol matchmaking process: https://lnkd.in/eKacnqCC
- And the award goes to…microRNAs! 🏆 The smallest type of RNA has just won a big prize. Dr Ryan Farr and his team are using them to detect livestock infections early based on host response. These tiny molecules have a big future in livestock disease diagnosis. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e2i4RcHS
- In a world full of plastic pollution, keep innovating and carry on! 💡 That’s exactly what our Indo-Pacific Plastics Innovation Network (IPPIN) innovators are doing by turning tricky plastic problems into circular, sustainable solutions. At our recent Demo Day campaign, more than 20 international innovation teams shared their solutions towards ending plastic waste. Together, Australia and its neighbours can tackle this global problem. Among the solutions on display: ✔️ How gaming can incentivise real-world waste collection ✔️ How coffee grounds can transform into carbon negative recycled plastics ✔️ Technology that rapidly sorts plastic bottles for efficient recycling Congrats to all involved in the 2024 Demo in Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok.
- Big data, tiny miracles. 👶 Whether we like it or not, AI is already part of our lives. But could it help us create life itself? As we explore in the new season of Everyday AI, it already is. In Episode 1, we speak to researchers and parents to hear how AI is revolutionising fertility care and improving the wellbeing of premature babies by enabling early detection of developmental challenges. - Plough can we set farming up for future success? 🚜 While many Australians may never set foot on a farm, farming impacts us all. Earlier in the year, we joined forces with the agricultural sector to envision what the future of Australian farming could look like. As the world gathers at COP29 to discuss a sustainable climate future, we're revisiting our Ag2050 Scenarios Report. Take a look: https://lnkd.in/gkgXTWEc #COP29AUS #AgCatalyst2024
- Ready to log your fluffs for science? ✋ We're calling on Australians aged 14 plus to track their farts with the 'Chart Your Fart' app to help advance gut health research. A recent study showed that over 60 per cent of Australians feel they pass excessive gas, with 43 per cent experiencing it daily. This fun project aims to map out what “normal” wind looks like across Australia — covering volume, stench, and more. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gRBb_83Y
- Testing our memory, one byte at a time. 🖥️ This #ThrowbackThursday we're taking you back to the late 1940's when the first computer was the size of a double garage and consumed enough electricity to power a suburb. 75 years ago today, at our Radiophysics Laboratory in Sydney, the CSIR Mk, later known as CSIRAC (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Automatic Computer), ran its very first test program. It was Australia’s first stored-program computer, and only the fourth in the world! It could store up to 2 kilobytes, which is too small for a profile picture now, but it was 1000 times faster than the best mechanical calculators in the 1950s. These days, you can see CSIRAC on display at Museums Victoria's Scienceworks. - We're powering up for #AgCatalyst2024 next week at Brisbane Powerhouse! 🌱 Our biennial AgCatalyst event showcases the latest agricultural innovations from us and our industry partners. We've been growing crops especially for a mini-farm at the event, right in the heart of Brisbane. Here's our team with our sugarcane crop ready to be trucked in. 👇 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gz5kJqj9
- A helping hand for reef restoration. ✋ We've developed a world-first soft robotic ‘hand’, which could revolutionise the delicate, labour-intensive process of cultivating baby corals in laboratories. The robotic hand, or gripper, was designed to be attached to a coral farming robot called Coral Husbandry Automated Raceway Machine (CHARM). The project is part of our Kick-Start program, which offers dollar-matched funding and access to research expertise to Australian start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
