- Thailand has become the first country in South East Asia to recognise marriage equality! Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn signed a bill into law this week, granting full legal, financial and medical rights for marriage partners of any gender. Thailand now joins the ranks of Taiwan and Nepal becoming the third country in Asia to recognise our love and as equal. With the Bill set to take effect in 120 days, we can expect the first wedding in January next year! Congratulations to Thailand 🌈
- South Australia has passed a law banning conversion practices. The bill passed 13 votes to 8 on Tuesday night. This legislation is not perfect but it’s an important step forward, and it will protect thousands of vulnerable South Australians into the future. We are not broken, disordered or in need of fixing.
- We couldn’t be more proud to see Ghassan Kassisieh receiving ‘Community Hero’ at this year’s ACON honour awards. Ghassan's dedication to fighting injustice has resulted in world-leading reforms that will make life better for generations. Every finalist last night is already a hero and has contributed so much to our community. But Equality Australia’s work is forever shaped by Ghassan's dedication and compassion to ensuring LGBTIQ+ people can live a life of dignity, recognition and respect.
Here they are! CONGRATULATIONS to all the recipients of the Honour Awards 2024! ✨ Read about all our Honour Awards recipients here: https://lnkd.in/gen8HSYi - NSW has finally begun to reconcile with a sad and dark chapter in its history. Today the Minns Government apologised to the victims and survivors of historic LGBTQ hate crimes, backing all 19 recommendations handed down by the world-first commission of inquiry last year. The mishandling of these crimes will always forever stain the history of NSW. But this apology will go some way to healing the harm caused by inaction and negligence.
- The SA Government has announced it will introduce a bill banning conversion practices. Survivors have fought long and hard for this reform, which goes some way towards protecting LGBTQA+ people from practices that seek to change who they are and who they love. Equality Australia CEO Anna Brown joined survivors and local advocates in Adelaide yesterday to welcome the Bill, while cautioning that more needs to be done to ensure people are properly protected. We are not broken, and we don’t need to be anything other than who we are. Sign the petition to support this reform here: https://lnkd.in/g_yRwR5P
- Huge news! The government has announced today that trans and gender diverse people will be counted in the next census. There will also be a question on sexual orientation. This is a huge testament to everyone who spoke up, kept the pressure on and helped the next census count more of us, properly. Being counted is about being seen and about being heard. Unfortunately, people with innate variations of sex characteristics, or intersex people, won't be counted in the next census. The ABS did not recommend this question due to the testing results. We will keep working in support of intersex organisations for full inclusion into the future.
- We are thrilled to announce that Kylie Kwong is joining our team as a patron of Equality Australia. The world renowned chef closed her restaurant Lucky Kwong in 2024 to focus on driving social change through food, wider arts, cultural and community projects including her role as a Powerhouse Associate for Parramatta’s Powerhouse Museum. Kylie wants young queer kids today to not feel as lonely and anxious as she did, saying “our uniqueness must be celebrated and valued”. “Equality Australia is a powerful voice that advocates for and builds community. Everyone should be able to bring their whole self to the table.”
- The response so far has truly been incredible, and there's still time add your name via the link in the comments! The census provides a snapshot of Australia. LGBTIQ+ people deserve to be seen in this snapshot. While we fight to be counted in 2026, we can be heard right now. We can have this petition tabled in parliament to and bring these voices with us - so every voice counts now! Head to the link in the comments and add your name today, to be counted in 2026!
- Seventy organisations working to support LGBTIQ+ communities across Australia have called on the federal government to count all of us properly in the next census. Last week, the Prime Minister confirmed that a question on sexual orientation will proceed to testing for the 2026 Census. But this doesn’t go far enough. We need questions that capture trans and gender diverse people, and people with innate variations of sex characteristics. Our census should count all of us in 2026.
