We are committed to developing buildings, cities and communities that are healthy, livable, resilient and sustainable.
About us
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) was established in 2002 to develop a sustainable property industry in Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions. To drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards: -Sustainability - by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations -Integration - of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings. To achieve these objectives, the GBCA runs the Green Star environmental rating system, education and advocacy efforts in sustainable building practices, and events on the national and international levels.

Sometimes it can feel like we are having a ‘two speed’ discussion about sustainable building in Australia. This month our CEO Davina Rooney writes that while some leaders race ahead to create long-term value from the net zero transition, others still see sustainability through a cost lens, but playing sustainability and affordability off against each other is a zero-sum game. We need sensible policies that create long-term value - like the NSW Government’s new Consumer Energy Strategy - to help us reframe these two-speed discussions and ensure sustainability is seen not as a cost, but as an investment towards a unified goal of healthy, resilient, positive buildings for all. Read more from Davina in her latest Green Building Voice article -https://lnkd.in/g-cZ-9Hr - In April, Country Road Group received a 6 Star Green Star - Interiors certification for their recently opened Country Road store in Ballarat. It will always hold a special place in the hearts of the project team and the Ballarat community, giving a heritage bank building a new lease on life. Being such a quintessential Australian brand, it only made sense to tie in the local heritage of Ballarat when deciding to open a new store on the main strip. By keeping the original structure, the team were able to hit a trifecta of sustainable, innovative and circular targets 🌟 Read more about Country Road’s flagship store for the future in our case study here > https://lnkd.in/gpeQ4yvv
- Australia’s housing sector is at a turning point, and while there are challenges, there’s also a great opportunity to build smarter and more sustainably. As GBCA CEO Davina Rooney puts it, “We’ve got to make sure we don’t build the ghettos of tomorrow... we’re in a climate crisis, and we also know it’s going to get hotter. We need to live in these dwellings in the future.” Weakening standards, rather than driving innovation, will lead to higher heating and cooling costs in the long run. This moment calls for innovation that prioritises energy efficiency and resilience, ensuring the homes we build today are ready for the climate challenges of tomorrow.https://lnkd.in/gB2TWcPp
Why has Australia fallen so short on housing targets – and how can it get out of the crisis? theguardian.com - For this month's employee spotlight we are chatting with Sebastian Hacker, a Senior Technical Coordinator in the Green Star Operations Transformation Team. 🍃 Sebastian is currently working with projects targeting the Early Access Apartments Pathway for Green Star Buildings and Performance v2 projects. Work that he describes as "challenging but exciting", this work will help projects target new pathways and rating tools. For him, one of the best parts of working at the GBCA is being part of such an incredible team. " I love the team culture, working with nice like-minded people, it makes coming into work fun." Sebastian is incredibly passionate about nature and biodiversity, which makes him well equipped to work on our future focus rating tools. "I’ve really enjoyed learning about the Nature Category in our Future Focus rating tools and participating in our Nature and Biodiversity Expert Reference Panel for Green Star Communities v2." Finally, if Sebastian could see any building become Green Star certified it would be the Sydney Tower eye because of its prominent height and iconic status in the Sydney CBD.
- How do you turn an 1890s heritage-listed former Bond Store into an exemplary sustainable office building? That's the brief for Kador and dsquared Consulting who will repurpose the heritage icon on Sydney's Kent Street into an optimised workplace, while targeting a 5 Star Green Star rating, representing Australian excellence in better, healthier and more responsible buildings. That might sound like a challenge, but what about the opportunities that might come with refurbishing vs developing a new build? ✅ 80% lower embodied carbon than a new build, by reusing the structure and façade ✅Existing data and learnings about how the building is performing ✅"Embodied amenity" - retaining and restoring existing amenities like a communal atrium, roof terrace and Sydney Harbour location From being 100% renewable energy ready, to having new high efficiency HVAC plant and natural ventilation, this project has the potential to push the boundaries of what can be done with an existing building. We can't wait to see how the 1 Kent Street project evolves. To learn how to register for a Green Star Buildings project, visit: https://lnkd.in/g2bxfpXw
- What is the pathway forward to a country of climate ready buildings? At the end of August, the ACT Government released the Sustainable Building Pathway (the Pathway) – a vision to lead the ACT building and construction sector to deliver resilient, sustainable, and future ready buildings. So, what do sustainable buildings look like to us? They are responsible, healthy, resilient, positive, support the creation of safe places, encourage solutions that address the social health of the community, promote active connections between people and nature, and enhance the industry’s capacity to innovate. We are proud to have contributed to the policy content of the Pathway, especially when the opportunities identified in the paper align so tightly with the Green Star Buildings rating tool. And we are even more excited to continue working with the ACT Government and industry to make buildings in the ACT more climate ready. 🏠 You can find the Pathway here >> https://lnkd.in/gaHKfMVN

We are constantly impressed with the diversity of projects certified under Green Star Performance 💫 Earlier this year, Queensland's Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) became the first hospital to receive a 5 Star Green Star Performance certification, proving to the Australian market that healthcare can also be sustainable. As newly registered projects seeking a Green Star Performance rating from January 1 2025 must use Green Star Performance v2, we are excited to see the operations of existing buildings improve to help achieve IPCC climate targets. Congratulations to Australian Unity, Colliers, Hassell, Metro North Health and Cushman & Wakefield for creating a blueprint for sustainable operations of hospitals in Australia. Read our case study to understand how STARS received their 5 Star rating > https://lnkd.in/gvV-ysH2 - With recent policy advancements in Australia's commitment to an electric future, the conversation around electrification and energy efficiency is more important than ever. Join GBCA's Jamie Wallis in conversation with David Clark, Deborah Davidson, and David Mahony at the All Energy Australia Exhibition & Conference from the 23-24 October. Where they will discuss the future of electrification in the built environment. See the full agenda and register for free > https://bit.ly/AEA24_GBCA
- We are thrilled to share that a dynamic, multi-use community hub in the heart of Western Sydney is a finalist in the World Green Building Council's APAC leadership awards! Congratulations to PHIVE at 5 Parramatta Square which achieved a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built v1.2 certification earlier this year. PHIVE is already a much loved and much used public space within the buzzing Parramatta precinct. Here are some of its stand out, world leading sustainability features: 💚 Roof façade system made up of 548 individual skylight modules 💚 Solar collectors and water harvesting 💚 Smart mixed-mode ventilation system with automated louvres linking to the Bureau of Meteorology 💚 Use of City of Parramatta's 100% renewable electricity supply We commend all involved including Built., City of Parramatta and LCI Consultants, and we hope to celebrate with you when the winners are announced in November! We would also like to recognise Hannah Morton, Associate Director with Cundall, who was nominated for the women in green building leadership award. Hannah has dedicated nearly 20 years of her career as an engineer to sustainable design in the built environment, working closely with project teams to mitigate potential harm, and embed advanced energy efficiency and passive performance. Hannah's practice contributes to shifting design and building practices, and this has been reflected in dozens of third party verified best practice project outcomes. Hannah also engages across industry on working groups and committees and has worked on high profile Green Star projects including Sydney Opera House, Barangaroo and the first and only Living Building Challenge-certified building in Australia, the SBRC at University of Wollongong. Thank you Hannah for your phenomenal contribution to the Australia's green building movement 👏
