About us
Welcome to the official LinkedIn page for Guide Dogs Australia! Our name certainly gives part of the answer away! For over 60 years, our Guide Dog Program has matched specially-trained Guide Dogs with their Handlers, to provide companionship, trust and freedom. These days, in addition to our beloved Guide Dogs, we also offer a range of other services to support Australians with low vision or blindness – regardless of their age, their lifestyle, or their level of vision. We can also refer you to consulting specialists in Psychology, Counselling, Neuropsychology, Physiotherapy, Endocrinology, Optometry and Audiology. This Black Friday sales season, from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 November, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT is popping up in Paddington with a unique shopping experience, Blackout Friday. Come into the store that won't let you see what you're buying. Grab a free thrifted bargain from UTURN and for yourself a small part of what online shopping for a person with low vision or blindness could be like. While stocks last! Why are we doing this? Online shopping can be a stressful experience for people with blindness or low vision. Very few ecommerce stores are truly accessible and inadequate product descriptions are everywhere, leaving most people confused about whether they're buying a plain red jumper, or a red Christmas jumper. While we can't fix every website this sales season, we can do our best to understand the problem, so businesses are motivated to do better and stop leaving over 500,000 Aussie consumers with low vision or blindness in the dark. Register for a ticket now through the link below to reserve your spot, or pop in on your preferred day! Walk-ins are welcome. The details: Dates: Thursday 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 November 2024. Location: 17 Oxford Street, Paddington, NSW 2021. Register for a free ticket or pop in on your preferred day! On Thursday 31 October, our Social Change team attended an event hosted by the Point to Point Commissioner in collaboration with the Minister for Transport NSW and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT at Sydney International Airport. At the event, we highlighted the advocacy work we’re doing to break the barriers that limit people with low vision or blindness regarding taxi and rideshare refusals. The Social Change team, Clients, Puppy Raisers and their adorable puppies came along to the event. We enjoyed great coffee and even better conversations with taxi drivers, shared information packs and talked about why Guide Dogs are important for people with low vision or blindness. Our team will continue to collaborate with the Minister for Transport NSW, Jo Haylen and the Point to Point Commissioner, Anthony Wing to raise awareness and advocate for positive change. We will also continue to engage with the community to educate taxi drivers on the rights of Guide Dog Handlers when using their services. Thank you to our Social Change team, including Tamara Searant, Jen Moon, Sarah Hirst, Daniel Searle, Sibylla Vaughan and Aroha Nisbett, our Disability Inclusion Advisor Jaci Armstrong, our Client Engagement Services Leader Gavan Harrison and our volunteer Puppy Raisers who were at the event to connect with the community to advocate for positive change. Would you like to get involved in our advocacy work? Sign up to become an Inclusion Ally to receive communication about the work we do and how you can contribute to positive change. https://lnkd.in/gXk8v4MG[Image description one: a table with a cloth that reads Point to Point Transport Commissioner, in front of the taxi rank at the Sydney Airport. We had a PAWsome time at our recent Puppy Pals picnic! Hosted at the Guide Dogs Centre in Glossodia, our team welcomed the Puppy Pals community to explore the place where our pups spend time training and learning as they progress towards life-changing careers! Attendees were guided throughout the kennels, sat front row at a Guide Dog training demonstration, listened to a presentation from Lived Experience Presenters about living with low vision or blindness and tested their knowledge in a Puppy Raising question and answer session. Thank you to our Guide Dogs Centre team, including Sharon Zammit, Maddison Conn and Craig Spillane, who helped host our Puppy Pals for this great event. A big shout out to Tara Sellar and the Fundraising team who helped bring this event to life, as well as our Volunteers who helped ensure the event was PAWsitively fun! - Our partners contribute in many significant ways, helping to break barriers and enable people with low vision or blindness to live their lives without limits. In addition to funding support and gifts in kind, they provide volunteer services to help us with the vital work we do. This week, 15 team members from our valued partner TPG Telecom Foundation spent the day with us packaging up items as part of our Bequestor program. We thank everyone who joined us on the day and everyone at TPG Telecom Foundation for their ongoing support.#GuideDogsAustralia[Image Description One: TPG employees posed for a group photo in front of a digital wall at the St Leonards Office. For this Occupational Therapist (OT) Week we asked Sarah, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT OT a very important question, “what’s the best part of being an OT?” Her response: “No matter where we work, we are promoting independence and quite often sharing skills and ideas we have learnt from other Clients with new Clients,” says Sarah. Whether they have a specific skill they would like to learn as part of their routine or a new technique, our OTs assist our Clients who have different levels of functional vision to create a program that suits them and to master it. From following recipes to plucking the weeds out of their lawns, our Clients are supported to live everyday life independently. “No two days are ever the same,” says OT Jo. “On one week I found myself discussing braille devices with an Auslan interpreter, teaching a child who is blind to stab gnocchi on their fork and providing strategies to a young adult with low vision and her circus trope teacher how to apply make- up to be performance ready!” Our OTs love to find new ways they can best tailor their programs to each individual Client and communication is key to achieving this! "It is great to be part of the communication of these great ideas. In 2024 for OT week, we are celebrating 80 years of connection. This connection is with our Clients, our fellow colleagues and the community,” says Sarah. Join us in celebrating the incredible work Occupational Therapists do to support our Clients! Here are three incredible, cost-effective tools that you might not be aware of: Pocket Size Assistance: Your smartphone is more powerful than you think! With Optical Character Recognition (OCR) apps, you can use voice commands to read text, scan barcodes, identify objects, and even find out how many people are in a room. It's like having a personal assistant in your pocket! Ask your OT to help you set it up! Illuminate Your Life: Lighting can make all the difference! Simply switching a light bulb from warm to cool can improve visibility for those with low vision. During your next home visit, let your OT assess your lighting situation—it could brighten up your life! Tactile Markers for Independence: Ever heard of tactile markers? These raised high contrast sticker dots can be placed on appliances to help those with low vision or blindness easily find the right settings. Imagine confidently using your microwave or washing machine—all thanks to a little help from your OT! Take the first step toward a more independent life—reach out to your Occupational Therapist or visit our website today! https://bit.ly/3BTrpQ1 #OTWeek #OccupationalTherapy #DailyLiving #Empowerment #GuideDogsQueensland
- It's Occupational Therapy (OT) Week! The theme this year is ‘Occupational Therapy for All’ and it is a time to recognise the OT profession, and the amazing things OT support can do to help individuals, groups and communities achieve optimal health and wellbeing. In honour of OT Week, here are a few tips to make your office more accessible for everyone! • When leaving your seat, ensure it is tucked back under a desk to avoid trip hazards • Use tactile bump stickers to help someone with low vision identify tea/coffee/sugar canisters in the kitchen • Keep your body moving and give your eyes a rest from screens by enjoying a walk on your lunch break • Try using night light/eye comfort options on your computer or phone, it may help with eye strain • Keep your workspace tidy and clutter-free to reduce visual complexity We hope these handy hints from our incredible OT team can make a difference in your workspace this OT Week 🎉.#GuideDogs #OTWeek #OccupationalTherapyForAll #OccupationalTherapyWeek #OccupationalTherapist #OT hashtag#Accessibility

The ‘Bark’eting team or the Marketing Team as they’re known externally, went offline on Wednesday 2 October and gathered at the Commonwealth Bank building for an all-day team workshop. From trivia, goal setting and learning fun facts about one another, it was truly a fantastic day of collaboration and connection. We can’t wait to share the progress on their team objectives in the upcoming year with our amazing community.
