I've just come back from annual leave with exciting news that I have been selected as a Churchill Fellowship recipient! I feel very honoured for this opportunity to spend 4-6 weeks in the United States and United Kingdom to investigate innovative global philanthropy strategies that can help improve outcomes for LGBTIQ+ people in Australia. Not only does this mean a lot personally, but it is also an important vote of confidence by such a respected institution, into the important need for greater philanthropy and inclusion for our rainbow communities. My Churchill project will seek to answer: What are the drivers behind greater philanthropic funding to LGBTIQ+ communities in the US and UK? What innovative philanthropy models and ways of working could we bring to Australia? How can we engage more communities in greater giving? I hope to develop a clear roadmap for advancing LGBTIQ+ philanthropy in Australia, to be implemented with the help of GiveOUT Australia, The Aurora Group - A Ruby Foundation Ltd and our other sector partners. There will also be insights applicable for other marginalised populations that struggle to access philanthropic funding. The end goal is a resilient and well-resourced Australian LGBITQ+ community sector that is better able to meet demand for services and ultimately create greater equality for all Australians. If you would like to learn more, or have recommendations for who I should speak to (foundations, thought leaders, LGBTIQ+ community organisations and giving communities) in the US or UK, please get in touch! Thank you to Georgia Mathews, Sam Turner, Erica Zhong and Heather Lord for your support with the application process. Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) #ChurchillFellow - #Wearitpurple - on your sleeve, in your heart, in your intentions. These powerful words from #AGSM alum Reno Leon remind us that we all count, of the ongoing need to be counted (think Census), of representing, of allyship and of support 💜

Acknowledging and supporting #WearItPurpleDay today, I'd like to thank my younger self for ‘Not giving up on me’ during a time when life felt bleak and hopeless. Growing up as a #gay kid in a culturally conservative and religious background in a #smalltown in India wasn’t easy - I call it the minority trifecta of misery! Being bullied, called names to your face, and excluded from peer circles takes a hit at your confidence and self esteem at that age. It reached a peak when you would scrutinise every little detail #suffocating yourself through this lens of fear, just to avoid that next hurtful comment being passed. However, none of that cames close to the feeling of grappling with your own identity, feeling utterly alone with conflicting thoughts, and having no one to talk to. I recall those years between 12 to 19 to be some of the most excruciatingly #painful, #isolating, and #loneliest. Today, on #WearItPurpleDay, all I want to say to all the #LGBTQ+ kids out there, whether you live in a big city or a small town is that: “I feel your pain, and I stand with you.” I know it’s not an easy path but please remember; ‘DO NOT EVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF!’. The days might seem long, and your hearts may feel heavy, but there is no night so dark that doesn’t yield to the light of dawn. And one day, when you least expect it, your light will shine and you will be grateful for the choices made, especially during those difficult years! The future self will be grateful that you: - didn’t succumb to peer pressure - listened to your inner voice - pursued your ambitions - worked towards financial freedom - acquired knowledge and learned new skills - took care of your physical and mental health - took time preparing for the hard exams - pursued that degree abroad - applied for that internship - reached out to that mentor - spoke your mind without fear - refused to let anyone define your self-worth - and did it all with a smile :) To every #LGBTQ+ person reading this: your #future self is waiting for you, is incredibly #proud of who you will become and is truly grateful that you held on #wearitpurpleday #authentic #motivation #lgbtq #growth #focusonself #holdon #grateful #diversity #inclusive #community #leadership #passion - Thanks for this Zhan - it's a great awareness building share that educates about Prep but also about the importance of enabling culturally appropriate approaches when engaging with stakeholders. A projected 20% uplift says it all.

Did you know that over half of newly diagnosed HIV cases in Australia are among men who have sex with men, with a significant number being people born overseas, particularly from Asia? PrEP, a highly effective HIV prevention medication, has been available in Australia since 2015 and was added to the PBS in April 2018. While it has played a crucial role in Australia’s progress toward HIV elimination, awareness and accessibility among migrants, international students and visitors remain challenges. I’m proud to have contributed to MSHC’s PrEP STAT Pack development program Nudgeathon last week, aimed at increasing PrEP awareness and adoption among overseas born GBM. During the two-day intensive strategy workshop, I had the privilege of leading an outstanding team, where we focused on applying nudging and MINDSPACE principles, enhanced by Dr. Jason’s insights, to create a culturally appropriate and cost-effective approach. Our data suggests this strategy could lead to a 20% increase in PrEP adoption rate among overseas born GBM over the next three years. ‼️Keep an eye out for updates from Alfred Health and MSHC Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, and be sure to share the PrEP STAT Pack with anyone who might benefit when it launches later this year. As part of Pride Month, I had the pleasure of facilitating an interactive session with UNSW Business School academic and professional staff on how to improve inclusion for LGBTQIA+ students across each stage of the student lifecycle. UNSW recently won Platinum at the Pride in Diversity 2024 Australian LGBTQ+ Inclusion Awards. This recognition reflects my experience as an MBA student at AGSM @ UNSW Business School: 🏳️🌈AGSM has one of (if not the only) dedicated LGBTQIA+ scholarship for MBA students (https://lnkd.in/gJdUT5Qr) 🏳️🌈 AGSM has a dedicated Pride@AGSM Network 🌈 for students and alumni, with a regular program of events and leadership development opportunities, as well as membership with other community groups (SGLBA - Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association, Out For Australia, Reaching Out MBA) 🏳️🌈 As a queer student, I was supported in providing constructive feedback and leading change within my cohort and across the faculty Efforts to foster LGBTQIA+-inclusive environments are ongoing, and needed now more than ever. While much progress has been made, we are seeing the impact of a global backlash against LGBTQIA+ rights here in Australia. The AWEI survey has shown a decline in support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in recent years. While LGBTQA+ identification is increasing, particularly amongst young people, less than half of LGBTQIA+ students feel safe at school. These insights show that we can’t be complacent and that now is the time to step up our support for LGBTQIA+ inclusion, particularly in educational institutions. As a good practice case study for inspiration, we looked at Macquarie Group, who were recently awarded the 2024 AWEI Employee Network of the Year. Some of the key themes that emerged from the group included: ✔️ The need to better understand the unique experiences and needs of LGBTQIA+ international students ✔️ Recognising that not all students want to be ‘out’ in all contexts, particular attention should be given to data privacy and opportunities to connect with peers in more confidential settings ✔️ There is still a long way to go to improve understanding and recognition of gender diversity, including the use of gender neutral pronouns While the group emphasised the importance of visibility, this was always focused on visibility of students. My reflection as a former student is that visibility of staff (both academic and professional) is just as important. My call to action to those working in university settings: never underestimate the power of your visibility and pride with students across campus.Claudia Crosariol Rhiannon Tout Jarther Taylor Caitlyn McLoughlin - Pride@AGSM engaged with community for two great events during this year's Pride Month: *Facilitating with Pride: Amplifying inclusion and outcomes for LGBTIQ+ Business School students led by Facilitator Emily (Em) Scott with an eager audience of Facilitators, Professional Staff, HDR students and UNSW Central teams engaged in a Design Thinking exercise to visualise and reimagine strengths in our student lifecycle. *Allyship in Action: The AGSM Student Association, led by EDI@AGSM Network Director Louella Yu invited community, well-travelled and new to the role of Ally, to share their experiences and learn best practice.
What an incredible night we had at our Allyship in Action: Pride Month event! A big thanks to our inspiring guest Ritu Kumar, GAICD, Elenita Elinon, and Tony Aitchison for sharing their personal experiences and insights on being concrete allies in today’s workplace. Remember, while educating and regulating ourselves is the foundation of Allyship, we must also advance by showing support and being advocates! Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion is not just a focus for Pride Month, but all year round. A special shoutout to Drag Queen Ivory Glaze for a fantastic introduction to Australia’s drag culture and an incredible performance. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event meaningful and impactful. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, speak up against discrimination, and keep the spark from this event alive as we promote inclusive environments.- +1

Thank you Allyson Cox for your wonderful presentation and leadership training during the Pride@AGSM 2024: Rainbow Connections - Leading the Change event. It was very informative and packed with new ways of looking at how we react to change and learning how to recognise and understand how we impact other's viewpoints as to how they will also react to change.

Yesterday Equality Australia launched Dismissed, Denied and Demeaned: A national report on LGBTQ+ discrimination in faith-based schools and organisations at Australian Parliament House. The report documents in shocking detail the extent of the discrimination and simple solutions to fix it. Federal protections would help fix gaps in laws across Australia in one go. The Albanese Government promised our community that they would reform these outdated laws before the last federal election. Now there’s a chance these important reforms may not go ahead. It's time to protect LGBTQ+ staff and students from discrimination in religious schools. Head to our link in the comments now and sign the petition urging the government to follow through on their commitment to our community and read the full report.
