- What is the value of water? Seemingly a lot...but also, basically nothing. Valuing water has been tricky. One consequence is that despite its importance to both agricultural and environmental outcomes, irrigation has not been a terribly successful subsection of #agtech. We have our theories about why that is (we wrote a whole report about it!), and many others have also spotted big challenges in this space. But when Jairo Trad and his team dug in, they saw an opportunity for business model innovation. Their path, via Argentinian agtech company Kilimo, has been far from smooth, but where they’ve ended up seems to be a unique unlock for adoption and value capture. This week, we’re sitting down with Jairo, CEO and Cofounder at Kilimo, who’s spent the last 14 years expanding the boundaries of the ag-water system to find the right answer to the question “who pays for water efficiency improvements.” Sarah Nolet and Jairo discuss: 1️⃣ Why deploying irrigation hardware was not the right model 2️⃣ The rational reasons why farmers avoid the pursuit of water efficiency, and how to leverage these reasons to encourage change 3️⃣ How the combination of sticky products and financial innovation align incentives among a diverse cohort of customers, stakeholders, and partners Podcast episode here --> https://lnkd.in/gRcJPDRkThe agtech adoption dilemma: irrigation --> https://lnkd.in/gP8jqv_U

I am excited to announce that Cecil is partnering with Chloris Geospatial to make forest carbon data accessible. This partnership includes two geospatial datasets that measure aboveground biomass stock and changes. Our integration means you no longer need to worry about managing file storage, creating your own integrations, or pre-processing geospatial raster data. This relationship has been built over many months, and I want to take the chance to thank Florian Reber and Marco Albani for their ongoing support with this partnership. In fact, the whole team at Chloris has supported us including Elisa Casavecchia, Jarrod Wong, Tom Badenhorst, and more. Over the time developing this partnership the Chloris team joined Rory, Connor and Tom at Data & Dumplings / COP 16 events, and I had the chance to run through the mountains of Switzerland with Florian over the summer. Get in touch to learn how you can get started with Chloris datasets on our platform today with no minimum usage. - Interested in systems change for climate resilience in agri-food? Queensland bio-packaging startup Earthodic banks $6 million Seed round for US push https://www.startupdaily.net - In many rooms these days, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) action seems inevitable. Corporates are talking about. Investors are talking about it. Governments, regulators, and even farmers are talking about it. And yet for many of us, the questions of what exactly ESG is, what pursuing these goals means, and how soon acting on them will be mandatory remain unanswered. Then just when it feels like we start to get a handle on a definition or a timeline, you leave one geography and enter another, and it seems like all the rules have changed! This level of ambiguity has piqued our interest to learn more about trends in ESG, global variations in ESG practices, and what the future might hold. So this week, we sit down with Catherine Marriott OAM, recent Nuffield Australia scholar (and much more!), who has spent the last year traveling around the world to learn about the current and future state of ESG in agriculture.Sarah Nolet and Catherine discuss: 💰 How the question “who pays?” gets scaled when ESG makes the transition from investor demand to governmental regulation 📚 Why inconsistent definitions, models, and methodologies are still holding the ESG space back, and what that will mean for the next few years 🪣 The interconnectedness of impactful work, which often doesn’t fall very cleanly in any of the siloed ESG bucketshttps://lnkd.in/g-DVzQT8

Today we are launching the Nature Data Sharing Initiative (NDSI). Most nature data is siloed in repositories and used by a very narrow audience today. Yet, if properly activated, this data could greatly improve our ability to understand and value natural ecosystems. NDSI is a collection of resources designed to promote data literacy and foster a culture of responsible, impactful data sharing. This version includes the following: - Overview: An introduction, overview, and guidance notes around nature data and Nature Practitioners’ field data; - Guide: A guide on practical steps for sharing data - Template: A data sharing worksheet and sample data sharing agreement template. Cecil developed the NDSI in collaboration with numerous experts. I am proud to share Nkwi Flores, Samichhya Khadka and Ashurst authored this version. These resources were also developed in collaboration with Emily Cravigan (Allens), Anthony Lloyd and Kendrick Deng (Ashurst), Connor Jordan, Tom Walker (Cecil), Florian Reber (Chloris Geospatial), Climateworks Centre, Megan Pillsbury (Dunya Analytics), Sara Schmude, Bert Glover (Impact Ag Partners), Kate Wing (Intertidal Agency ) Victor Allory, Romain Fau (Kanop), Paul Young (Kita), Karl Burkart (One Earth), Alexis Moyer, Ed Mitchard (Space Intelligence), Camille Goldstone-Henry, Jada Andersen (Xylo Systems), and Chris Tolles (Yard Stick PBC). These are living resources that we hope will be updated based on your feedback. A link to the home page is included in the comments. Please help us share these resources. - Let's talk about farmland + #agtech. Farmland has long been a popular asset among investors for its steady appreciation and resistance to economic downturns. At the same time, farmland is also a challenging asset at times, especially for farmers looking to expand, given farmland comes up for sale so infrequently and is so valuable. In the space between these two needs is where Fractal Agriculture has set up shop, connecting the dots between farmers seeking capital and investors looking to benefit from farmland investments. And for good measure, sprinkle in some regenerative ag practices for risk mitigation on both sides of the ledger. On this week's pod, Sarah Nolet and Shane Thomas (Upstream Ag Insights), sit down with Ben Gordon, co-founder and CEO of Fractal Ag, to break down the pitch in real time. Along the way, they share insights, ask questions, and decide whether they’d invest (note: neither this post nor the podcast are investment advice!) Sarah, Ben, and Shane discuss: * The opportunity in farmland markets for traditional and impact investors, and how access to this capital is valuable for leading farmers * The details of the Fractal model– including who pays, where the risk lies, and how the business gets buy-in from customers and partners * How regenerative ag practices fit in, and how they can be leveraged in adaptive ways to allow farmers to make the best decisions for their individual operationshttps://lnkd.in/gtW8n24R
