The analysis is based on a survey of owners, designers, and contractors supplemented with four case studies illustrating the recycling of construction demolition waste (CDW). The results indicate an acceptable level of awareness, but a mediocre level of implementation of sustainable practices which were limited to green design efforts and uncoordinated attempts at recycling construction demolition materials. The study concludes with recommendations on how to 1 further improve awareness regarding sustainable practices amongst the various stakeholders in the Lebanese construction industry 2 overcome some of the obstacles preventing higher recycling rates.

Dynamic modulus mastercurves are essential for the design and modeling of asphalt concrete (AC). ... more Dynamic modulus mastercurves are essential for the design and modeling of asphalt concrete (AC). One way of improving the accuracy of the upper asymptote of the mastercurve is to test at extremely high frequencies or extremely low temperatures. Ultrasound is used extensively in the nondestructive testing of materials and the work completed here demonstrates the potential for the application of this technology to AC. Since testing at extremely low temperatures is not practical, a new ultrasonic technique is developed for measuring the complex moduli of AC. A theoretical explanation of the measurement process is provided. Two AC specimens were tested using the ultrasonic method and the dynamic modulus method in the indirect tensile test (IDT) mode. Both test techniques were performed at four different temperatures. The mastercurves were constructed using time-temperature superposition on the IDT test data and the upper asymptotes were extrapolated. The ultrasonic data was shifted to the desired reference temperature and the predicted moduli were compared to those of the IDT test. It was found that the moduli predicted using the ultrasound measurement agreed well for the specimen with a lower air-void content and differed more for the specimen with a higher air-void content. The phase angles predicted by the ultrasonic method were higher than those obtained from the IDT test. It is believed that this was a result of wave scattering from air-voids and aggregates. Suggestions are made to further increase the accuracy of the technique.

To achieve rational design, designers need to gain enough familiarity with the new MEPDG software and knowledge of the incorporated design methodology, design inputs and Levels, and their relationships to key distresses and performance. In the presented research, a design of experiment was developed and numerous software runs were conducted to evaluate the impact and sensitivity of critical design inputs on pavement response and distresses. The Design Level of the inputs was not pre-selected; rather, it varied from one parameter to the other based on the data available and that is currently used for design by INDOT. The results of this study would help determine the extent to which the various design inputs need to be incorporated and further evaluated in INDOT's local calibration and implementation plan. As a byproduct, the performance of the rubblized section used as a reference in the sensitivity analysis is assessed. An example calibration procedure is provided for the rutting distress prediction model using measured data from the HMA rubblized pavement section.

This paper presents the experimental/analytical research that demonstrates the validity of the principle of time-temperature superposition even with growing damage and viscoplastic straining by conducting constant crosshead rate tests on specimens that were pulled apart in tension until failure. Direct benefits and applications from this finding include reduction in testing program conditions, development of strength and corresponding strain mastercurves as a function of reduced time, a methodology for the prediction of stress-strain curves for any given crosshead strain test, and simplification of thermorheological analysis of pavement structures.
