It occupies concerns at different levels including those of inhabitant decision makers. Yet, the problem is worsening, and many challenges hinder progress in conserving the river water as well as human health. It is an alarming situation and time to take the most appropriate and efficient actions to attain the sustainability of the water resources in the river, which include water quantity and quality. Four salient conditions describe the major challenges in the Litani River Basin (LRB): water scarcity, population growth (natural and refugee influx), rapid urban sprawl, and poor water governance. In this study, an empirical analysis has been elaborated comparing the existing challenges with the requirements for water sustainability. It implies and indicates water availability, environment, and water governance. The calculated Water-Resources Sustainability Index shows poor sustainability of water resour...

The public health authorities recorded 408 new positive cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)... more The public health authorities recorded 408 new positive cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said. According to Public Health Ministry, the authorities recorded the new positive cases in various provinces. The new positive cases increase the total number of COVID-19 positive cases to 7,072 since the outbreak of the virus in the country. This comes as the Ministry of Public Health on Sunday reported that 262 positive cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in various provinces. (Khama Press) Taliban militants have torched the bodies of three civilians and two security personnel after killing them in the Jaghato district of southern Ghazni province, local officials claim. But the rebels reject the claim as groundless. Police spokesman Ahmad Khan Seerat told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had shot dead three civilians and two policemen in the Qiaq Dara area of the district on Sunday. Six locations across the Lebanese Mediterranean were included for sampling. Oysters and the two fish types were collected after 72 days of the spill. The length, maximum width, and whole weight of individual organisms were recorded. Methanol extracts of the samples were analyzed for total PCB using a Competitive Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) based Spectrophotometry. All means of PCB in the three selected marine organisms were below the guidance level set by USFDA (2 ppm). A total of 6 significant regression equations were established between the total PCB level and certain size dimensions of specific selected marine species, with values of R2 ranging between 0.719 – 0.909 and P values ranging ...

In this paper, we analyze the susceptibility of agricultural outputs to future climate change in Lebanon, and the extent to which it propagates to the economic system as a whole. We use a methodological framework in which physical and economic mod-els are integrated for assessing the higher-order economic impacts of projected climate changes. By using this integrated modeling approach, we are able to quantify the broader economic impacts in the country by considering not only the temporal dimension but also the regional disaggregation of the results. Our estimates suggest that there are high potential costs and risks associated with a burden to the poorer and more vulnerable regions of the country. 1

This was the main theme of a recent lecture by Dr. Nadim Farajalla of the American University of Beirut (AUB), faculty director of the new Research and Policy Forum on Climate Change and the Environment in the Arab World. The climate change forum is one of several new programs launched this year by AUB’s Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI). Farajalla’s presentation inaugurated a Spring lecture series on climate change and the Arab world by seven different scholars, activists and officials. All the lectures are accessible on the IFI website. The impact of climate change will be felt in seven distinct sectors, he said: health, agriculture and food supply, forests, ecosystems and biodiversity, coastal zones, water resources, and energy producti...

The direct consequences of irrigating with wastewater on farm lands are surface runoff and leaching of veterinary antibiotics into deeper soil layers. Depending on their mobility in soils, these compounds represent a great threat to close rivers, groundwater, streams, and aquatic life, thus contaminating them and the crops grown around them. The aim of this study is to evaluate the uptake and accumulation sites of antibiotics in plants grown in nutrient solution and their effect on plant growth. Antibiotic analysis was done using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Lettuce and radish were grown at 0, 5, and 10 mg/L of enrofloxacin, oxytetracycline, and tylosin. The results indicate that the three antibiotics were absorbed in radish bulbs at an average of 67.7, 30.98, and 407.45 ng/g, respectiv...
