Moreover, most of the existing researches have been confined to examining the non-profit sector in the Western society and very little has been conducted about strategic planning in non-profits in developing countries like Egypt. This study empirically examines the effect of strategic planning on Egyptian non-profit organization’s performance effectiveness. An assessment of performance effectiveness was made using the multiple perspectives of the balanced scorecard (BSC). A fifth dimension was added to the BSC, developed originally by Niven in 2008, which was volunteers’ development. A retrospective cross-sectional survey research design was used to compare the performance of strategic planning non-profits versus that of non-strategic planning non-profits. A purposive sample of 40 Egyptian non-profit organizations was selected for participation in...

Startups in Egypt encounter myriad challenges that hinder their ability to reach their potential, sustain their market presence, and actualize their capacity to provide decent job opportunities. This policy paper examines Egypt's startup ecosystem, focusing on human capital management. The main research question is: what is needed for startups in Egypt to thrive, and, more importantly, what can be done to help them provide more decent jobs? Research data was gathered through primary and secondary sources. Five policy alternatives were identified that could help enhance Egypt's startup ecosystem and enable startups to thrive. These policy alternatives cover: enhanced governmental support to startups, strengthening HCM in startups through capacity building and awareness raising, capitalizing on corporate social responsibility, upgrading and linking the higher education curriculum to entrepreneurship market needs, enhancing support provided by civil society organizations and international development partners to startups in Egypt.

However, one of the most vulnerable groups that was severely hit by the pandemic was that of the healthcare professionals (HCPs) who work in public isolation hospitals. Based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of HCPs, occupying different positions, and located in different geographical areas in Egypt, the study assessed the extent of impact of COVID-19 on HCPs perceived sense of wellbeing and its different dimensions, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Findings showed that although HCPs felt a sense of pride with the work they were doing, and were mostly satisfied with their financial compensation, all other dimensions of their wellbeing were compromised, including the physical, psychological, emotional, social, developmental, and work domain-related aspects.

Besides governments, civil society organizations have an important role to play. The aim of the current research paper is to explore the role of Egyptian non-governmental organizations in integrating the 'differently abled' citizens in society. After reviewing the range of theoretical models used in studying disability, whether the individualistic/medical model, the social model or the biopsychosocial model, a case study approach, adopting the most different design, is used to study the work of four non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working with the disabled in Egypt. Findings revealed that the implicit disability model adopted by the different NGOs influenced their activities, their perception of challenges faced, and their recommendations for improved effectiveness. While the traditional NGOs followed the individualis...

After dissecting the structure and composition of the current pay system, and conducting structured interviews with a sample of Egyptian government employees to solicit their views about the adequacy of pay, the authors propose a system for pay adjustment and strategies to resolve the problem. Foremost among these issues are securing the needed extra funding for increasing government employees ’ pay, right-sizing the government civil service, enhancing transparency, reducing wage discrepancies, reforming the minimum wage policy and establishing a better link between pay and performance. To conclude, the study stresses that the urgency of the problem requires the Government of Egypt to consider pay reform a top priority and work immediately on developing its civil service reform strategy in consultation with sta...

H... more The government of Egypt invested heavily in building an e-government platform for its citizens. However, we believe that those investments were not associated with adequate marketing efforts that are required to change the behavior of the Egyptian people. Accordingly, this study was performed to examine the effectiveness of marketing e-government services in Egypt. The views of students at both private and public universities in Egypt were examined. A survey instrument was administered that questioned respondents in both types of institutions about their awareness, usage, satisfaction, trust, hindrances, incentives and opinions about the marketing of e-government services. Preliminary findings point out to there being a significant number of similarities as well as differences between both university groups regarding their needs and expectations about e-government services. Internet adoption and awareness about e-government services did not affect the people’s use of e-government se...

Privatization of state-owned-enterprises (SOEs) and the introduction of competitive markets have been adopted by nations around the world as a means to reform public infrastructure and to improve delivery of goods and services. Our strategy for analyzing approaches to the study of organizational change in privatized firms is two fold. First, we undertook an extensive meta-analysis of pre and post -privatization changes. Second, we developed a model that identifies the variety of outcomes that the theory suggests are associated with privatization with a focus on changes in organizational culture and behavior. We constructed an interview protocol based on our model and conducted interviews with executives in privatized firms in Brazil, China, and Egypt during 2002 and 2003. Based on the interviews, our research suggests that two factors play an especially c...
