Belk et al. (1989) also note that the sacred should be approached with care, because the sacred has kratophanous power. Kratophany—the simultaneous devotion to, and fear of, the sacred (Pimentel and Reynolds 2004)—is experienced by consum-ers because the efficacious power of the sacred is unpredictably multi-valenced: it can be manifest in a benevolent and/or malevo-lent way (Belk and Wallendorf 1990). Accordingly, when consum-ers seek the benevolence of the good-sacred, they likely also expose themselves to the malevolence of the bad-sacred (Belk and Wallendorf 1990). Consequently, consumers can simultaneously experience strong positive feelings (e.g. devotion) and strong negative feelings (e.g. fear) towards the sacred (Belk et al. 1989; Pimentel and Reynolds 2004). Belk et ...

In most Hinducommunities, gold forms an indispensable part of the jewelry thatbedecks a bride (Shukla 2000) as she undergoes the rituals that willincorporate her into her groom’s family. Since weddings are themajor cultural performance of every Hindu family (Kolenda 1984),we examined the ritualistic use of gold jewelry in weddings todevelop insights into the Hindu perspective of possession meaning. We synthesized the relevant literature with data from fifteen depthinterviews before, during, and after participant-observation of theHindu wedding of “Lisa” (WF22) to “Sanjay” (IM22). Thelongitudinal nature of the data collection engendered a temporalperspective of Lisa’s journey into a Hindu extended family. We found that gold jewelry carries functional meaning forHindu consumers, as a store of wealth and as a way to conform tosocial norms of respectability (Gell 1986). It can also ...

It is often particularly difficult to identify what theoretical contributions the research hopes to make. When authors submit work for publication, reviewers and editors often ask them to ensure their work “engages with and/or contributes to ongoing conversations” in their target journal. What they are really asking is “what is your positioning? Why does your work belong in this journal?” This paper takes a practical approach to explaining what positioning means, why it is important to identify and position research as fitting into and extending prior work, and what positioning involves. It concludes by providing practical tips to help researchers who are not yet confident authors position their work more theoretically.

Design/methodology/approachThis ethnographic study uses data from 26 in-depth interviews with vinyl collectors, augmented with longitudinal participant–observation of vinyl collecting and music store events. FindingsThe findings reveal how the physicality of vinyl facilitates the passionate relationships (with music, the vinyl as performative object and other people) that make vinyl so significant in vinyl users’ lives. Research limitations/implicationsAs this study examines a single research context (vinyl) from the perspective of participants from three developed, Anglophone nations, its key theoretical contributions should be examined in other technological contexts and other cultures. Practical implicationsThe findings imply that miniturisation and automation have lower limits for some products, material attributes shou...

This demystifies the processes involved in systematically and critically reviewing the literature to demonstrate knowledge, identify research ideas and questions, position research and develop theory. A three stage model (assembling, arranging and assessing), each with two interrelated steps, is presented and discussed, along with practical tips and helpful examples. Although aimed primarily at research students, this information in this article will also be useful for research supervisors who wish to find ways to pass along their tacit knowledge related to this critical research skill.

Methodology/approach Four years of engagement with 24 consumers involving prolonged observations and unstructured depth interviews provided the empirical evidence for this paper. Findings Even humans who perceive their personal capacity to influence events as limited (whether due to actual or perceived limitations in physiological capabilities, material resources, and/or interpersonal networks) can assemble a network of persons, possessions, and practices to signal the agency to themselves, and to others. These assemblages, which invariably feature indexicons, allow people to construct semiotic agency in ways which are shaped by their habitus. Social implications This research has important implications for social and housing policy because disadvantaged consumers are more likely to rent than own, which limits their capacity to assemble semiotic agency. Originality/value This research introduces the new concepts of semiotic agency and indexicons to consumer culture theory and shows how even disadvantaged consumers can deploy these to signal agency to themselves and others.

In this article, the authors examine sustainable consumption behavior in the context of the annual inorganic collection in Auckland, New Zealand. Depth interviews and observations revealed that the recognition that treasure can be found in trash was pivotal in motivating collectors to collect for themselves and others, prolonging the useful life of objects. Contrary to the “future-for-others” framing of sustainable consumption that is often evident in public discourse, collectors initially had a “present-for-us” perspective. However, being confronted with excessive waste made this negative consequence of consumerism more proximate, motivating subsequent sustainable consumption behavior. The authors suggest how public policy makers can take advantage of the finding that the desire to consume sustainably is both a motivator and a ...

From this perspective, we unpack consumer disposition of meaningful possessions to strangers at garage sales and online auctions. We reveal how a range of valences of self-extension and self-references other than the ideal self shape a meaningful possession's journey from self to other. We identify a new iconic transfer divestment ritual, deepen and reinterpret other divestment rituals, and uncover how a shared sense of self allows possessions to migrate across seller-buyer boundaries. We present and discuss the implications of a model depicting three paths to disposition.

In keeping with ethno-consumerism, the authors utilize Hindu meaning categories of sacredness, purity, and auspiciousness to examine the wedding ritual among diasporic Hindus. The authors unpack the transformation of outsider fiancées into insider daughters to show how gold is employed to separate, link, and cross ...

Our research offers substantive contributions to the smoking prevention literature because most prior work has been situated wholly within Western cultural contexts. We contribute methodologically by showing how a multicultural team-based approach can reap the advantages of interviewer–participant congruity whilst overcoming its limitations, thus paving the way for more fruitful qualitative research with minority groups. Our research also contributes theoretically to the self-construal literature by comparing the role of self-construal not just within the two groups but also across them. Our findings show that independent self-construal played a significant role in NZE women's resistance to smoking. However, for Tongan women, both ...

The ability to conduct such analyses quickly, and with good external validity, is useful. This paper applies an underutilised technique, co-word analysis (Callon, Courtiale and Laville 1991), to web-based data on authenticity, a construct of increasing interest to consumer behaviour researchers. The technique allows accurate quantitative assessment, in unbiased naturalistic settings, of the interrelationships among the different terms used to describe a concept.

Academic research suggests that information, searchability, and interactivity all increase the value of an online directory for consumers. Content analysis is used to examine the features offered by the leading online Yellow Pages in 30 countries. Information, Search and Interactivity indices are computed for each directory. Hierarchical clustering is then used in order to classify online Yellow Pages into four types of sites. All types of sites offer limited interactive features, despite the fact that the potential for interactivity is the key competitive advantage of online media. While the ...

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Mindcam research methodology as an addition to the videographers tool-kit, which uniquely records and interprets videographic data from a first-person perspective. Design/methodology/approach -The philosophical rationale for collecting observational data from the informant's perspective is presented. A full description is provided of an innovative research method that allows market researchers to observe, record and interpret consumers' experiences from the informants' literal and figurative viewpoints. The technical and ethical issues that should be addressed when using this methodology are specified. Findings -Observational research presently shapes and edits data as it is collected, filtering others' behaviour through the researcher's perspective to generate interpretive insights. Recording consumers' lived reality, from their own unedited perspective, allows the consumer experience to be re-lived by the researcher. This assists in generating a negotiated interpretation of the consumer's reality. Findings are not constrained by the researcher's perspective of the informants' reality. Originality/value -This new method integrates own-perspective videography with post-hoc visual elicitation, thereby generating informant-driven perspectives of their own lived consumption reality. Dual-mode presentation of the data (original experience with the informant's interpretation) enables viewers to judge the truthfulness of the interviewer-informant negotiated interpretation of the informant's lived consumption reality. Enough information is provided for others to employ the Mindcam method in their own research.
