It starts from the concept of intelligent cities as territories that link human, collective and artificial intelligence, and describes four IT platforms that sustain the knowledge functions of these cities. The platforms facilitate operations in the fields of strategic intelligence, technology dissemination, new product development, and product promotion. knowledge ecosystems. The introductory part sets the frame of this paper; the second part conducts a systematic literature review regarding the association of knowledge with urban development since the beginning of the millennium, placing emphasis on urban knowledge ecosystems. The third part explores the benefits of using digital services in the implementation an urban knowledge ecosystem. The fourth and last part of the main body of this paper examines the urban knowledge ecosystem at the medium-sized city of Thermi, Greece, where in recent years a series of digital services were put in operation. The final and conclusive part of this paper examines the integration of digital services within the urban realm, based on the experience of Thermi, and how this process can support the development of knowledge and innovation-led cities.

The introductory part conducts a systematic literature review regarding the evolution of the “Knowledge Cities” term, since the beginning of the millennium. The second part of the paper explores the case of “Digital Thermi”, a digital city platform for the medium-sized city of Thermi in Greece. The platform, besides representing the digital aspect of the city, encompasses specific population groups (citizens, entrepreneurs, public administration), providing user-driven, targeted e-services. The final and conclusive part of the paper examines the integration of digital services within the urban spatiality, based on the outcomes of the Digital Thermi project, and how this process can support the development of knowledge and innovation-led cities.

Thessaloniki is a medium-sized city that constitutes an interesting field for investigation regarding the development of the cultural and creative economy. It is a post-industrial city that has seen a large part of its productive fabric, both in the form of building stock and human resources, remain inactive. The gap formed by the decline of manufacturing and trade, has in turn been bridged by leisure industry businesses. However, this model is in question regarding its sustainability. The purpose of this research is to detect and highlight prospects for urban sustainable development in the context of the global economic crisis with creative economy as the main tool.

Emergent creative ecosystems referred to the spontaneous phenomena, the bottom up development procedure happened in certain urban areas. These urban districts act evidently as stage complexes containing interactive parts, similar to definitive laws of a natural ecosystem. Its organisms do not exist independently but often form interactive groups. Sometimes, single urban species may have pervasive influence on several other entities of this network. The paper examines new key approaches for urban strategies derived from the emergence of creative dynamics, thought the case of Thessaloniki's Valaoritou area; a historic commercial and manufacturing urban district that, after faced the vast industrial decline, has emerged new characteristics. Entertainment activities, café, bars, restaurants have rapidly grew in the area, just after the first one opened. In parallel, there is a concentration of various artist workshops and creative art spaces, a fact that gives to the area a hybrid character.

Even if the tourism is often represented as industry of low impact, the researchers have begun to recognize the tourism as a factor of environmental change and taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of the tourism phenomenon and organizational and functional structures of tourist destinations, especially the coastal areas, it is obvious that it is enough difficult to delimit with precision the tourism sector, as a single total of competences, that they are distinguished easily by the remainder policies of tourist destinations, and to record the spatial changes in the tourism.

Comprehending the importance of neighborhood as a basic urban cell, a lot of urban programs seek to the diffusion of public space in this basic city level shaping the way of the public space meets with the private. Strategies for public space, such as the pocket parks, the community gardens, the woonerfs and the living streets initiatives, aim to blur the limits between public and private space.

The comprehensive urban ecosystem approach, face certain urban areas, such as urban waterfronts, as valuable natural resources interrelated to the entire urban environment, aiming to provide strategic solutions for enhancement of integrated ecosystem services. This paper argues that we should consider ecosystem functions within the city as dynamic, hybrid, and living ecosystems lying between the city and the nature. This approach provides new key aspects for policymakers and planners, particularly as urban sustainability, resilience, and environmental crisis, increasingly reshape cities and elevate consideration of these topics.
The paper highlights the economic contributions of Thermaikos Gulf ecosystem goods and services to the city’s welfare and recommends actions and investments required to ensure that they are valued and integrated into metropolitan policy decision-making.
