It differs from all previous ones because it consists only of pictures taken at major scholarly events, as well as personal moments with friends or renowned personalities during the period of the last 25 years (1998-2023), some of which were posted on social media, or on the proceedings of scientific meetings.

The presentations were delivered in a period that extends from the preparation of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, the Council itself, the granting of the Ukrainian autocephaly, the covid-19 pandemic, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Some of the causes are analyzed in brief: the marginalization of the Antiochene tradition, an overdose eschatology, the “modern” understanding of the Bible, the gradual loss of the prophetic character of the Church, which is more evident in the Bible, and the marginalization – until the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church – of its witnessing responsibility, have resulted in a significant legacy that hinders any real Biblical and liturgical renewal. The experiment of the Church of Greece that launched nearly 20 years ago an official, albeit unsuccessful, liturgical renewal project. The final proposal is a combination of both this neglected prophetic character and the prevailing eschatological dimension of the Orthodox faith, with all that these imply for an auth...

The most recent crisis erupted in the rejection of the Balamand Declaration by both the Ukrainian Greek Catholics and those Orthodox following the rigid stance of the Russian Orthodox Church. A description of the more favorable approach to Greek Catholicism from the Middle East, Greece, and America, and the new perspectives that appeared after the granting of autocephaly by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The paper will conclude with a personal recommendation as to how the most thorny issue in Orthodox-Catholic relations can become an optimistic case that can contribute to the quest for Christian unity."

Among the admonitions of the second and more significant of Moses' addresses we read the following: In times to come your children will ask you: "Why did the Lord our God command us to obey all these laws?" Then tell them: "We were slaves of the King of Egypt and the Lord rescued us by his great power. With our own eyes we saw him work miracles and do terrifying things to the Egyptians and to their King and to all his officials. He freed us from Egypt to bring us here and give us this land, as he had promised our ancestors he would. Then the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these laws and to have reverence for him. If we do, he will always watch over our nation and keep it prosperous. The right thing for us to do is to obey faithfully everything that God has commanded us" (Deut. 6:20-25). Why did the Lord our God command us to obey these laws? (6:20) At first glance this text appears to be somehow irrelevant to our faith as its main content is about law and commands. Even more so if it is read against the background of world Christian mission. This is almost true, but not quite. Beyond the ways that the present pandemic crisis has endangered the public health, the precautionary measures assumed worldwide have also challenged our ecclesiastical life in two distinct, albeit interrelated areas: the enforced enclosure of the faithful, with consequences not only for the constitutional right of religious freedom but also for the identity of the Church defined by the Eucharistic event as a community coming together "in the same place."

Its main focus, as well as its point of departure, is the Orthodox theology. In addition to the restoration of the ancient order of deaconesses, the book also deals from a purely theological perspective with the overall issue of the ordination of women. It covers almost all the fields of theological scholarship, thus providing an objective and paramount picture of a thorny and divisive issue.
The nearly 40 chapters of the book are scientific papers presented at an international conference with the title “Deaconesses, Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology”, organized in Thessaloniki Greece, January 22-24, 2015, by the Center of Ecumenical, Missiological and Environmental Studies “Metropolitan Panteleimon Papageorgiou” (CEMES).

The terms "Unity" and "Martyria/Witness" express the ultimate goal and the authentic way of pract... more The terms "Unity" and "Martyria/Witness" express the ultimate goal and the authentic way of practicing the Christian mission respectively. The subtitle "Christian Witness and Interfaith Dialogue," marks the development of the theology of the world mission.
"Witness" is now the theologically authentic missionary term, the equivalent of the Greek word μαρτυρία. Witness expresses the genuine missionary spirit of Christianity, free from the imperialistic and expansive tendencies of the missionary movements of the past. "Witness," without ceasing to be "Orthodox," is basically "Christian," ecumenical and universal, covering the whole Christian faith. As a consequence of this understanding of the mission, the notion of "common Christian witness," the common struggle of all Christians in a spirit of love and reconciliation, is established, until the achievement of a real Eucharistic communion among them.
Finally, "interfaith dialogue" is the final stage of Christian witness, in the form of dialogue with the people of faith of other religious systems (inter-faith dialogue), rather than the exercise of indirect (proselytizing) violence. This dialogue also differs from the inter-religious dialogue of a secular nature (in the form of syncretism). It has largely gained its theological legitimation on the basis of aspects of Christian theology, such as Trinitarian theology, Eucharistic ecclesiology, Economy of the Holy Spirit, which in the last few decades was primarily promoted by Orthodox theologians.
The studies that make up this book are the fruit of the author's theological reflection in the field of his ecumenical service in WCC in the academic theological education, where for twenty-five consecutive years he taught – in addition to his primary profession, that of Biblical Scholarship – the courses of Missiology and Inter-faith dialogue, as well as in the field of world mission in various capacities.
Chapter 1 ("The Theological Foundation of the Mission"), as well as the two Orthodox declarations ("Orthodox Church and Ecumenical Movement" and "The Contribution of the Orthodox Church to Peace, etc."), and the first three ecumenical declarations “Mission and Evangelism: An Ecumenical Affirmation,” "The Divine Eucharist as a Missionary Journey," and "Christian Witness – Common Christian Witness"), were first published in my earlier Handbook, Orthodox Christian Witness, where also the Chapter 2, "Biblical Perspective of Christian Mission," comes from.
The first part of Chapter 3, "The Development of the Theology of the Mission and the Inter-faith Dialogue", was first presented in English in the Festschrift to Professor George Galitis, and the second part from the 2007 academic
year of the Academy of Theological Studies of the Holy Diocese of Demetrias and Almiros (Volos), entitled "The Theological Framework of Interreligious Dialogue".
Chapters 4 to 7 are all the corresponding chapters of my book "Postmodernity and the Church, in an improved form.
Chapter 8, "Orthodoxy and Politics" was first published in English in "God's Rule. Politics of World Religions" (edited by Jacob Neusner, from the University Press of Georgetown University in Washington DC, 2003), and in a Greek translation by Nikos Dimitriadis in "Politics and Religions" (edited by Kostas Zorbas, published by Papazisis, Athens 2007).
Chapter 9, "Tradition and Mission" originally appeared in French at the Dictionaire Oecumenique de la Missiologie. 100 Mots pour la Mission (editions Cerf / Labor et Fides, Paris / Geneva 2001),
Chapter 10, "Theology and Science" comes largely from my keynote festive paper, delivered at the celebrations in honor of the Three Hierarchs in 2005 at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Chapter 11, "Orthodox mystery and Christian Witness" was published in my book Lex Orandi. Liturgical Theology and Liturgical Renewal "(Indiktos Publications, Athens 2005).
Finally, Chapter 12, "Eucharist as a Missionary Event" was first presented in English at the 3rd Symposium of Eastern and Western Biblical Scholars.
The book's appendices are some Orthodox and Ecumenical declarations

The ultimate goal of the Divine Economy, and therefore the purpose of the mission of the Church, cannot be other than the unity, not only of the human beings, but also of the whole of creation. On the other hand, an authentic way of exercising this mission cannot be any aggressive and expansive behavior of Christians, but a loving and compassionate witness of the believers as a result of their Eucharistic experience.
On the other hand, "Christian Witness and Inter-faith Dialogue," marks the development of the theology of the world mission. "Witness" is now the theologically authentic missionary term, the equivalent of the Greek word μαρτυρία, which expresses the genuine missionary spirit of Christianity, free from the imperialistic and expansive tendencies of the missionary movements of the past. This "witness," without ceasing to be "Orthodox," since it comes from the experience and the theological tradition of the writer, is basically "Christian," ecumenical and universal, covering the whole Christian faith without confessional constraints and the theological divisions of the past. As a consequence of this understanding of the mission, the notion of "common Christian witness," the common struggle of all Christians in a spirit of love and reconciliation, is established, until the achievement of a real Eucharistic communion among them. Finally, the "interfaith dialogue" is the final stage of Christian witness, in the form of dialogue with the people of faith of other religious systems (inter-faith dialogue), rather than the exercise of indirect (proselytizing) violence.

A complete change of the traditional outlook of the curricula of the Theological Education are necessary: from a faith-oriented to aliturgical/mission-oriented curricula,
In addition, an authentic Christian Theological Education must be first and foremost relational rather than educational. A martyria/witness mission must be inter-related to liturgical rather than confessional/ dogmatic theology. The syllabus of teaching missiology must include the above mentioned characteristic.

Early Christian iconography that depicts people in the altar table of churches thus provides critical evidence for assessing who did what during the ancient liturgy. The three very oldest surviving iconographic artifacts to depict Christians in the altar areas of real churches were discovered buried below ground in the twentieth century, and quite unexpectedly, each portrays women in the altar area—in two cases women in parallel with men, and in one case, women only. Today these depictions of women in the altar areas of Old Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem are almost always studied individually, and thus, not recognized as a striking pattern of female liturgical leadership across geographic areas. This long-buried art provides strong evidence for the role of women deacons in the early church.
