This article lays out the terminological system used to distinguish between concrete and abstract... more This article lays out the terminological system used to distinguish between concrete and abstract nouns in Pseudo-Arcadius’ Epitome of Herodian’s Περὶ καθολικῆς προσῳδίας (‘On prosody in general’), and shows that this system is fundamentally different from those found in other Greek grammatical texts.
LSJ (s.v. ὁμότονος, ΙΙ) offer the definition ‘having the same accent’ for ὁμότονος as a grammatic... more LSJ (s.v. ὁμότονος, ΙΙ) offer the definition ‘having the same accent’ for ὁμότονος as a grammatical term. This definition does not make clear whether ‘having the same accent’ involves having the same type of accent (acute or circumflex), having the accent in the same position, or both. This article examines the use and interpretation of the term ὁμότονος in grammatical and lexicographical works and scholia. The patterns of use that emerge reflect an implicit awareness of important structural features of the Greek accent system.
