This oration remained almost totally unknown to researchers. The main purpose of the present article is to edit this interesting text, in order to give the opportunity to study not only its content but also its connection with the political situation and the educational program of the Patriarchal Academy. It is delivered by three manuscripts, but only one is accessible: cod. Beinecke ms 295 (XVIII ce.), which was cautiously and diligently copied by the Phanariot Scholar Nikolaos Karatzas (1705-1787). Iakovos Argeios taught rhetoric theory and practice, a course that was introductory to the upper course of philosophical studies. As it emerged through the text analysis, the speech is written in the context of the rhetorical lecture and therefore had to implement all the principles ...

It aims at tracing and recording the beliefs of fourth year undergraduates of Philology and Philosophy/Education departments about the school subject of Ancient Greek language (“Thematography”) both included in the curriculum of the Greek Senior High school. The research methods used have been those of brainstorming and open-ended type ques¬tionnaires. Throughout a qualitative analysis of data it has been shown that, in general, fourth year undergraduate students tend to adopt a positive atti¬tude towards this particular course, although it has often been associated with negative feelings, with its main weakness emanating from its teacher- oriented, grammar-syntax method of teaching. A teaching approach, which is included in such a general outlook, meeting the goals of the school subject of Ancient Greek, as these have been specified by the Curriculum ( knowledge of antiquity/mankind ), can realize principles, like the differentiative approach, based on the literary gender of texts, the critical reading, the intercultural approach, the use of ICT( Information & Communication Technologies ) e.t.c. At the present proposal an example is given of how the aforementioned teaching principles can be applied, in the subject of Ancient Greek of the 2nd Grade of Junior High School. As it emerged through the text analysis, the speech is written in the context of the rhetorical lecture and therefore had to implement all the principles of the literary genre of encomium, as mentioned in the handbooks of ancient and contemporary rhetoricians (Hermogenes, Aphthonius and Korydalleus). Yet, there is a basic difference: the present oration is a royal oration, which means that Iakovos had to use additional sources (Menander the Rhetor and Synesius). Furthermore, the existence and the content of the speech allows us to draw conclusions about Bassarava's involvement in the administration and financial support of the Patriarchal Academy and Iakovos's political ideas on the ideal ruler, the skills and qualities he must possess in order to exercise effective administration. This oration is not a slavish praise, full of flattery; it is an excellent example of the rhetorical eloquence of the famous Aristotelian professor. Iakovos gives us an ideal picture of Wallachia, as seen through the eyes of Constantinopolitan Greeks: the country of Constantine Bassaraba was the refuge for all the Orthodox.

In this context, the present study records, evaluates and categorizes curriculum materials and theoretical orientation: the specific learning standards, lessons, assignments, and materials used to organize and teach this particular course. Thought this new Curriculum belongs to the “classical” or “academic tradition”, it gives emphasis on teacher autonomy in terms of teaching methodology and text selection and introduces the creative and critical thinking and discovery learning into the study of Ancient Greek prose texts. Also, in this paper an attempt is made to compile the various methodological instructions or suggestions of the Curriculum in a structured teaching plan.

However, this work has not been published yet as a whole. The main goal of this paper is to study the manuscript tradition, in order to form a more complete picture of the influence that Neoaristotelianism has exercised over the Greek higher education under Ottoman domination. In this study 90 manuscripts of the Commentary are presented in chronological order. For each codex its content is given, as well as the title, the notes of the scribes and owners, and a more accurate dating. It is evident that a lot of churchmen, scholars and students have studied and copied this work with diligence in the 17th-18th cent. in the major and smaller cities and monasteries of the Greek cultural area (Constantinople, Bucharest, Jerusalem, Tyrnavos, Mt Athos, Patmos, Sinai, etc.).
