A major aim of the case, which extended over a period of one year, was to study the extent to which the CMM could be adapted to very small teams for software process improvement (SPI). We have concentrated primarily on those parts of the CMM that involve the achievement of the objectives of key process areas (KPA) in level 2, the Repeatable level. Throughout the year we gathered data from a wide range of management and engineering tasks. The results obtained after one year have shown a clear improvement of the process. The pragmatic application of the CMM has thus shown that SPI can indeed be achieved by a very small team. We also came to the conclusion that the CMM cannot be applied in a straightforward manner by such a small team. We have also concluded that team management is just as important as process management in this kind of environment.

This chapter introduces a case in which the researcher and the research client are the same entity. The research question and the problem to be solved concern communication in communities of practice using information technology. A description of the community of practice under study is provided, as well as the action research approach and the research cycles concluded. Results concerning the research question, the problem under resolution and the ethical question (researcher and research client being the same entity) are discussed. The evaluation of the results leads to the main conclusion that the action research approach is helpful for both learning processes and problem solving, even when the researcher and the research client are the same entity.

The project was carried out between 2011 and 2014 and its main results are a consolidated proposal of an analysis model to address the use of Communication Technologies in Higher Education institutions, as well as the U-TRACER ® tool. This Web-based tool provides support to the process of collecting, processing, and deployment of data related with the use of Communication Technologies in a specific Higher Education or in a group of institutions, based on institutional or geographical criteria.

For this research work, carried out under the TRACER project, a characterization form was developed and administered, intended to be filled by officers with responsibilities for Communication Technologies, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers. Current trends indicate the progressive integration of Communication Technologies in teaching and learning and a special attention to the need for training in the pedagogical use of these technologies. The results suggest that institutional options have some influence on the teaching and learning practices of teachers. The article presents some examples of innovative practice, which scope is not limited to their immediate contexts, therefore representing best practices.
This chapter presents and discusses best practices and future trends in the use of Communication ... more This chapter presents and discusses best practices and future trends in the use of Communication Technologies (CT) in Portuguese public Higher Education Institutions (HEI), from a literature review between 2008 and 2013, triangulated with the opinion of Higher Education teachers, using interviews. This contribution emerges from the project “TRACER—Portuguese Public Higher Education Use of Communication Technologies”, which aims to contribute towards the characterization of HEI according to their adoption and use of CT in educational contexts.
The literature review reports best practices, although with different approaches, such as the frequency and satisfaction of using CT as learning support, the design of teaching strategies, the roles and responsibilities of students and teachers, among others. Current trends indicate the progressive integration of CT, namely Web 2.0 and LMS/VLE tools, in teaching and learning processes, containing a potential for innovation, as well as motivation. Future trends are related to the increasing use of CT for educational processes, highlighting the growing incorporation of mobile devices, used at the service of collaboration between educational actors. Training for the pedagogical use of CT is stated as relevant, considering the fast technological change and principles advocated by the Bologna Process.

As IES são tradicionalmente resistentes à mudança, dado que, por força do hábito de utilização do método científico de suporte à produção de conhecimento, a adopção de novas práticas passa por um processo complexo com uma tipologia semelhante a uma investigação-acção.

To do this, it takes a number of key concepts from a well established information systems framework and shows that, if the ambiguity of those concepts is restricted, they can be used to describe organizational learning in terms that, though originating from information systems, fit perfectly an existing reference framework for organizational learning.
