I'm not sure if this will qualify as "awesome" but since there was "computer parts" in the community's interests... who knows? & I do have many other awesome projects going on, including a local zine I'm leaving copies of in public places around my city [there are NO zines here - this is very challenging]... so I AM an awesome-project-making person :)I am very broke & trying to raise some money by making & selling things so I have been creative & used what I had around me : I made those funky technological key-chains using dead RAM memory bars from computers my boyfriend repaired or thrifted/dumpster-dived. I’ve had some [rather rude] people say this was « lame » in other communities [like crafting communities, etc…] I dont think these are lame, I think they are pretty cool & I gave some to friends who thought so as well and I kept one myself to use! I agree that they werent very long to make [duh] and I usually make stuff a little more creative/crafty than this, but I used what was at hand and dare I say I think it’s a pretty good idea & has some style [in a geeky way :) ]! I thought this may interest some of you since there is « computer parts » in this community’s interests.Each has a regular metal key loop & can hold keys like any normal keychain. They are sturdy, lightweight & easy to find in your purse / messenger bag front pocket because of their practical shape. They are all about 3 inches long and vary slightly in width [3/4 inch to 1 inch] but they are all metallic green with a varying number of little black boxes & different patterns.Each goes for 7$ US postage paidIf this interests you please buy one & help a starving artist survive ;)Paypal to girl_w_cat@yahoo.comIf you do think it’s lame, there is no need to waste your time & mine by commenting to say it… just scroll past & please dont be rude. _12:27 am_[thepodger]	Here is a quick little project that could be a great gift idea. I posted this blog entry Nov. 22. This community looks like a good place to add this little bit of home fabrication. Enjoy. The drug store CVS has a disposable digital camcorder for 30thattakes20minutesorsoofvideo.Youarethensupposedtoreturnsaiddisposablecamcordertothestore,pay30 that takes 20 minutes or so of video. You are then supposed to return said disposable camcorder to the store, pay 30thattakes20minutesorsoofvideo.Youarethensupposedtoreturnsaiddisposablecamcordertothestore,pay13 more to get a DVD of your 20 minutes and they keep the camera. While this may sound like a good idea to some, I think fabricating a USB cable, downloading the right free Mac software and reusing the disposable camera sounds better! Don't worry there is a PC Version too. I have been reading about this for a while and was really interested in doing it. It is great to have a $30 knock-around camcorder. I find that the stuff worth recording is usually done in places you would never bring an expensive camera. Now I have a cool little toy to bring skiing & any other places I can think-up trouble. Following these instructions, I was able to make a great cable out of an old USB cable I wasn't using and a centronics connector I got from CNA(item #85-536). The cable itself is not pretty but it works without any trouble. I enjoyed making this & now I have a great little camera. If you want to do this, I found a great wiki on how to hack both the CVS still camera & the camcorder.UPDATE 12/4/05 If you really want to make this your own, don't forget to customize it. When you peel off the stickers on the CVS camera there are just four small philips screws holding this little camera together and then two more black wide headed philips screws holding the main PC board on to the front half of the housing. Be careful with the four pronged power connector on the bottom left on the PC board when you are prying the camera out of the front half of the housing. With just a little work, you will find it is very easy to dismantle, paint, and make it your own!Current Mood: working

Right now I’m working on an organic farm that is the rural site for Growing Home, a job skills and readiness program for ex-homeless and low-income people. The trainees come out from Chicago twice a week, and the farm staff works out here about five and a half days a week.The urban site is at the Su Casa CW House in Back of the Yards, Chicago, where the trainees work another two days a week. They also work in turn at the farmers' markets with other staff members in the Lincoln Park and Hyde Park neighborhoods in Chicago. The rest of our produce is sold on site, or through a 40-share Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.It's pretty slick. http://www.growinghomeinc.orgCurrent Mood: okay

_11:42 am_[allforchoice]	hi, i just joined because this is one of the best idea's for a community ever! a little about myself, my name is heather and i live in a little place called sacto, california. expect lots of projects...this just happens to be the only one i have an immediate photo of at the time. we built this out of a found fire hose, and it was very sturdy and very fun until the landlord showed up and had a fit. but it still exsists, in the backyard of course.

_11:49 am_[michaelpowers]	A taste of what's to come... Okay, so props to Nick for making this group. Its a great idea. I don't really know where to start, so I'll start with the death pogo-stick.My boss gave me about 15 springs for a trampoline last summer. I was going to double-spring the tramp we had over at riverside for more kick, but those campus safety assholes stole it. So I decided to make a pogo stick that could go 10 feet up out of it.The other day, i finally started working on it. First i try to put weights on the springs so I could calculate the spring coeffient, which ended up as me and Cory just fucking hanging off two of them in parallel and measuring the displacement. The results were pretty shitty, and suggested that I would need about 30 or 40 to obtain my goal, so i said fuck it and designed a stick out of 6, all in parallel.That night, i went over to the Human Powered Vehicle cage and took out extra metal, 3/4 and 1" chromoly tubing, .05" wall thickness (i think) The basic design just had footbars, handlebars, and triangles under the feet. These were both to go onto the 1". then the 3/4 inch would slide inside this outer tube and be connected to the springs. Since the springs were tension springs, i had no choice but to have them at the top, firing up towards your chest. DeadlyTook about an hour to cut everything to the right lengths, maybe two hours to weld. I used the schools Tig machine, which was pretty nice. I was originally planning on cutting the feet and hand pegs with hole saws so they fit flush, but i just fucking filled it with filler instead. Both Rage and Cory cut for me, and hung with me while I welded. My favorite weld was the attachments for the springs. I just used like 6 pieces of 1/8 inch steel, all 1" by 1", and tached them all around the perimeter of the 1" diameter tubing. There was so much gap. So i just fucking laid a huge ass bead around the whole thing.Attaching the springs was hella-hard, especially since i kept putting the springs through the wrong wholes since i am dumb. Bill Burns and Joe Compagno helped for that, with Rage and Cory, i think. i don't remember. Anyhoo, the stick only lasted for like three bounces before the bottom of the 3/4 inch diameter stuff just bent hard. i shoulda used solid stuff for the bottom. The next day, i cut the bottom off above the crease, bought a threaded solid rod to slide into the 3/4, and added a 3/4 around the bare part of the rod. Welded that on, and she rides like a dream.There is no weight limit, it bottoms out to avoid over-stretching the springs. 160-200 lbs works best. Only goes like two feet up though, as predicted. The center is fucking deadly. I showed it to my Integrated Design teacher, who basically paid for it since i used all Human Powered Vehicle metal and tools. Well, it basically was a HPV, so i guess thats okay. Anyhoo, he tried hoping on it, while wearing dress shoes and a shirt+tie. I thought it would be a disaster, but it worked out just fine. _11:53 pm_[huddlingmasses]	Project: Awesome So yes. Awesome project. A friend and I are planning on [each] building one of these synthesizers in a few weeks. For $30, you can buy the PCB to solder all the parts on, and it gives you a step by step description of how to build it. Additionally, you can do a little more wiring, and add a patchbay to modularize the whole thing. Also also, there's a mod on there to hook the synth up to be controlled by other devices via control voltage (recommended 9v max); we're probably going to wind up building some nice theremins, but he's got some vintage keyboards that have CV outs, as well. It's a kickass moderate-level diy project for people intested in music and electronics!
