Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman inceleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini Talim ve Terbiye Kurulu Başkanlığı tarafından yayınlanan 2015 yılı ve 2017 yılı Türkçe, Matematik ve Hayat Bilgisi dersi öğretim programları kullanılmıştır. Konu alanları, kazanım sayıları, içerik ve değerlendirme boyutları açısından karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. Birinci sınıf Türkçe Dersi Öğretim Programında, bitişik eğik yazıdan dik temel yazıya geçiş yapılmıştır. Ses temelli cümle yönteminden ses esaslı ilk okuma yazma öğretimine geçiş sağlanmıştır. Harf grupları 6'dan 5'e düşürülmüş olup kazanım sayısı artırılmıştır. 3 dil becerisi 4 dil becerisine çıkarılmıştır. Birinci sınıf Matematik Dersi Öğretim Programında, kazanım sayısı azaltılmış olup programda 4 öğrenme alanına yer verilmiştir. Programının içerik kısmında, öğrenme alanlarında ve alt öğrenme alanlarında değişiklikler yapılmıştır. Birinci sınıf Hayat Bilgisi Dersi Öğretim Programında ise bir önceki programa göre genel amaçlar sadeleştirilmiş ve daha anlaşılır

Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaöğretim kurumlarında 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılından itibaren uygulan... more Bu araştırmanın amacı ortaöğretim kurumlarında 2014-2015 eğitim öğretim yılından itibaren uygulanmakta olan Destekleme ve Yetiştirme Kurslarına (DYK) ilişkin öğrenci görüşlerini belirlemektir. Araştırma nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan tarama modeli kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen beşli Likert tipi Destekleme ve Yetiştirme Kurslarına İlişkin Öğrenci Görüşleri Anketi (DYKİGA) kullanılmıştır. Ölçeğin güvenirlik ve geçerlilik çalışmaları 536 (326 bayan, 210 erkek) ortaöğretim öğrencisiyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu Türkiye'nin Batı Karadeniz Bölgesi'nin Kuzey Batısında yer alan iki ilindeki 615 (414 bayan, 201 erkek) ortaöğretim öğrencisinden meydana gelmiştir. For this purpose, a study group consisting of 9 th grade students was employed. The students participating in the research consisted of one control (n:30; 17 girls, 13 boys) and two experimental groups (EG1, n:31; 17 girls, 14 boys; EG2, n: 30; 16 girls, 14 boys). The research was conducted with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design which is one of the quasi-experimental designs. The data of the study were collected using quantitative and qualitative data collection tools. Güdülenme Stratejileri Ölçeği (GSÖ) adapted to Turkish by Büyüköztürk, Akgün, Kahveci & Demirel (2004) was used as the quantitative data collection tool. The qualitative data tool of the study was the interview protocol asked to sample group selected from the experimental group students (EG1, n:3; EG2, n:3). In the light of the findings of the research, it was proved that WTL activities increase the motivation of the students. In addition, it was found that the feedback given along with WTL enabled students to be more motivated than the non-feedback given students. Based on the results of the research, it was suggested that WTL activities should be used to teach motivation strategies.

The main question of the study is "What are the impacts of Writing To Learn (WTL) and Writing To ... more The main question of the study is "What are the impacts of Writing To Learn (WTL) and Writing To Communicate (WTC) activities on the academic success of the English learning students?". This study aims to compare the effects of WTL and WTC activities on academic success of students in English lessons. The study was carried out with 59 (27 male, 32 female) nineth grade high school students in 2015-2016 in Turkey. One of the quantitative designs, quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group was used in the study. Experimental group had 30 students (16 female, 14 male) and control group had 29 students (16 female, 13 male). Present Perfect Tense Academic Achievement Test (PPTAAT) and Rubrics developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools in the study. Students in the experiment group wrote "WTL letters" and the control group students wrote "WTC letters" for four weeks as inclass and homework assignments. There are four hypotheses of the research and anlyses were made to prove the correctness of them. All of the hypotheses were corrected based on the results. As a result of the study, it was detected that there is a statistically meaningful difference for the benefit of the experimental group. It can be said that writing WTL letter helps students learn English better than writing WTC letter. Teachers can be recommended to change the way they use writing from WTC to WTL.

The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable scale for assessing students' achievemen... more The aim of this study is to develop a valid and reliable scale for assessing students' achievement in English classes on Simple Past Tense. Firstly, to ensure the content validity expert views were taken into consideration at every stage of the study. Experts were composed of nine English teachers and four curriculum instructors. Secondly, 130 questions were gathered from nine English teachers. 55 questions, which were thought to be testing the same goal, were eliminated and 75 questions were left for pilot study after the opinions of experts. A Pilot study was conducted with 75 questions and 266 students who are in 12 th grade. The students were chosen from four different high schools. The final form of the test consisted of 25 questions. After the application, the data were analyzed with ITEMAN and SPSS. The analysis revealed reliability coefficient (Cronbach Alpha) as 0.81, mean difficulty as 0.54, mean discrimination as 0.36, Spearman Brown Correlation as 0.89. Item total correlation ranged from 0.38 to 0.63. Based on the data obtained, the Simple Past Tense Achievement Test (SPTAT) can be said to be reliable and valid tool to assess students' achievement in English classes on Simple Past Tense.

The purpose of this article is to examine the basic level of schooling in Turkey and Finland from... more The purpose of this article is to examine the basic level of schooling in Turkey and Finland from the perspective of history. Descriptive and document analyses of the qualitative methods were used to analyse the documents from 1820 to 1920. Policy development was categorised into three sections showcasing a gradual development into phase where education became means to build up the cohesion of the society. Raw data were analysed by three experts who are also the researchers of the study. The study revealed some similarities and differences. As the results implicate, the development of school systems in both Finland and Turkey was closely connected to linguistic, cultural, and national identities highlighted in school plans. Thus, in both Turkey and Finland the school system reflected and developed along with historical changes that were occurring at certain times in their history.

Mixed method (One­group pretest­posttest design and content analysis) was employed to have better results. The results are; (1) the multiculturalism perceptions of trainee teacher were high before the experimental application, (2) the multiculturalism level of perception did not change based on gender, age, region of birth and graduation type, (3) the experimental application made statistically meaningful difference in favor of post tests, (4) the perception level of trainee teachers did not change based on gender, age, region of birth and graduation type after the experimental application (5) the qualitative results of the study support the findings of quantitative results. This article addresses the role of the state and state formation in the establishment of national... more This article addresses the role of the state and state formation in the establishment of national education during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Through a comparative case analysis of two countries at the European periphery (Finland and Turkey), this article shows how national educational systems, in both instances, were driven by periods of intense state building. In the nineteenth century, military defeats sparked educational reforms, and in the early nineteenth century school laws were enacted due to the establishment of the republics of Finland and Turkey. Nevertheless, these examples also show the limits of a state formation perspective. Despite changes in educational policy, neither state reached high enrolment levels in the nineteenth century, and only in Finland schooling for all was realised in the 1930s. Thus, this work encourages further comparative analyses of the social, economic and political circumstances in which these states acted.

One of the most important goals of education is to ensure that students are academically successf... more One of the most important goals of education is to ensure that students are academically successful. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors ensuring success and causing failure of students in educational environments. In the research, single survey model, one of the survey models, was used. Extreme or deviant (outlier) sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods determined within the scope of the research, was used. The study group of the study consists of 21 students who are in the 11th grades of a secondary education institution and who are either successful or unsuccessful in academia. For this purpose, interview method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The data of the research were collected using semi-structured interview questions and analyzed by induction method. The answers obtained from the students were written and analyzed first by content analysis and then by descriptive analysis. It was detected that individual factors, teacher attitude factor, family influence factor and out-of-school support factors were effective in achieving of successful students. It was also detected that unsuccessful students' academic failure was caused by difficulty of lessons, teacher attitude, friend effect and other factors. As a result of the research; suggestions were made on how the success and failure factors identified can be reflected positively and effectively on the education and training environment.

Yapılan çalışmada nitel araştırma tekniklerinden betimsel tarama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada sınıf öğretmenlerinin görüşlerini belirlemek amacı ile kolay ulaşılabilir durum yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada verilerinin toplanmasında yarı yapılandırılmış bireysel görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Formda yer alan sorular, 14 sınıf öğretmenine sorulmuştur. Katılımcılar tarafından cevaplanan sorular not alma tekniği ile birlikte ses kaydı da yapılarak araştırmacı tarafından kayıt altına alınmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilen verilerin analizinde, içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. İçerik analiz tekniği kullanılan çalışmada kodlar, MAXQDA 2018.1 programı kullanılarak oluşturulmuştur. The success of foreign language teaching depends on a number of variables including motivation, t... more The success of foreign language teaching depends on a number of variables including motivation, teaching methods and techniques, background knowledge etc. One of these variables is foreign language anxiety on which numerous studies have been conducted. These studies generally focus on the reasons of anxiety, how to eliminate them, the correlation between achievement and anxiety, etc. However, there is a scarcity of research about the relationship between anxiety and critical thinking tendency. This study aims to fill in this gap by determining what kind of a relationship (positive or negative) there is between these two concepts. The study has been conducted in Turkey with 136 high school students. Critical Thinking Tendency Scale (Semerci,2015) and Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (Aydın, Harputlu, Güzel & Genç, 2016) have been used as data collection tools. Data have been analyzed through path analysis and the findings show that there is a positive correlation between critical thinking tendency and foreign language anxiety. It is expected that foreign language teachers consider this finding when designing the classroom activities. Depending on the results of current study, it can be said that low level of FLA is essential in the foreign language classrooms. FLA is not the only variable effecting the foreign language learning environment, so it can be suggested to conduct new research on the effects of other variables along with FLA on foreign language learning environments.

Araştırma nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan tarama modeli kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen beşli Likert tipi Destekleme ve Yetiştirme Kurslarına İlişkin Öğrenci Görüşleri Anketi (DYKİGA) kullanılmıştır. For this purpose, a study group consisting of 9 th grade students was employed. The students participating in the research consisted of one control (n:30; 17 girls, 13 boys) and two experimental groups (EG1, n:31; 17 girls, 14 boys; EG2, n: 30; 16 girls, 14 boys). The research was conducted with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design which is one of the quasi-experimental designs. The data of the study were collected using quantitative and qualitative data collection tools. Güdülenme Stratejileri Ölçeği (GSÖ) adapted to Turkish by Büyüköztürk, Akgün, Kahveci & Demirel (2004) was used as the quantitative data collection tool. The qualitative data tool of the study was the interview protocol asked to sample group selected from the experimental group students (EG1, n:3; EG2, n:3). In the light of the findings of the research, it was proved that WTL activities increase the motivation of the students. In addition, it was found that the feedback given along with WTL enabled students to be more motivated than the non-feedback given students. Based on the results of the research, it was suggested that WTL activities should be used to teach motivation strategies.

The main question of the study is "What are the impacts of Writing To Learn (WTL) and Writing To ... more The main question of the study is "What are the impacts of Writing To Learn (WTL) and Writing To Communicate (WTC) activities on the academic success of the English learning students?". This study aims to compare the effects of WTL and WTC activities on academic success of students in English lessons. The study was carried out with 59 (27 male, 32 female) nineth grade high school students in 2015-2016 in Turkey. One of the quantitative designs, quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group was used in the study. Experimental group had 30 students (16 female, 14 male) and control group had 29 students (16 female, 13 male). Present Perfect Tense Academic Achievement Test (PPTAAT) and Rubrics developed by the researcher were used as data collection tools in the study. Students in the experiment group wrote "WTL letters" and the control group students wrote "WTC letters" for four weeks as inclass and homework assignments. There are four hypotheses of the research and anlyses were made to prove the correctness of them. All of the hypotheses were corrected based on the results. As a result of the study, it was detected that there is a statistically meaningful difference for the benefit of the experimental group. It can be said that writing WTL letter helps students learn English better than writing WTC letter. Teachers can be recommended to change the way they use writing from WTC to WTL.

Firstly, to ensure the content validity expert views were taken into consideration at every stage of the study. Experts were composed of nine English teachers and four curriculum instructors. Secondly, 130 questions were gathered from nine English teachers. 55 questions, which were thought to be testing the same goal, were eliminated and 75 questions were left for pilot study after the opinions of experts. A Pilot study was conducted with 75 questions and 266 students who are in 12 th grade. The students were chosen from four different high schools. The final form of the test consisted of 25 questions. After the application, the data were analyzed with ITEMAN and SPSS. The analysis revealed reliability coefficient (Cronbach Alpha) as 0.81, mean difficulty as 0.54, mean discrimination as 0.36, Spearman Brown Correlation as 0.89. Item total correlation ranged from 0.38 to 0.63. Based on the data obtained, the Simple Past Tense Achievement Test (SPTAT) can be said to be reliable and valid tool to assess students' achievement in English classes on Simple Past Tense.

Descriptive and document analyses of the qualitative methods were used to analyse the documents from 1820 to 1920. Policy development was categorised into three sections showcasing a gradual development into phase where education became means to build up the cohesion of the society. Raw data were analysed by three experts who are also the researchers of the study. The study revealed some similarities and differences. As the results implicate, the development of school systems in both Finland and Turkey was closely connected to linguistic, cultural, and national identities highlighted in school plans. Thus, in both Turkey and Finland the school system reflected and developed along with historical changes that were occurring at certain times in their history.

This article addresses the role of the state and state formation in the establishment of national... more This article addresses the role of the state and state formation in the establishment of national education during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Through a comparative case analysis of two countries at the European periphery (Finland and Turkey), this article shows how national educational systems, in both instances, were driven by periods of intense state building. In the nineteenth century, military defeats sparked educational reforms, and in the early nineteenth century school laws were enacted due to the establishment of the republics of Finland and Turkey. Nevertheless, these examples also show the limits of a state formation perspective. Despite changes in educational policy, neither state reached high enrolment levels in the nineteenth century, and only in Finland schooling for all was realised in the 1930s. Thus, this work encourages further comparative analyses of the social, economic and political circumstances in which these states acted.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors ensuring success and causing failure of students in educational environments. In the research, single survey model, one of the survey models, was used. Extreme or deviant (outlier) sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods determined within the scope of the research, was used. The study group of the study consists of 21 students who are in the 11th grades of a secondary education institution and who are either successful or unsuccessful in academia. For this purpose, interview method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The data of the research were collected using semi-structured interview questions and analyzed by induction method. The answers obtained from the students were written and analyzed first by content analysis and then by descriptive analysis. It was detected that individual factors, teacher attitude factor, family influence factor and out-of-school support factors were effective in achieving of successful students. It was also detected that unsuccessful students' academic failure was caused by difficulty of lessons, teacher attitude, friend effect and other factors. As a result of the research; suggestions were made on how the success and failure factors identified can be reflected positively and effectively on the education and training environment.

The success of foreign language teaching depends on a number of variables including motivation, t... more The success of foreign language teaching depends on a number of variables including motivation, teaching methods and techniques, background knowledge etc. One of these variables is foreign language anxiety on which numerous studies have been conducted. These studies generally focus on the reasons of anxiety, how to eliminate them, the correlation between achievement and anxiety, etc. However, there is a scarcity of research about the relationship between anxiety and critical thinking tendency. This study aims to fill in this gap by determining what kind of a relationship (positive or negative) there is between these two concepts. The study has been conducted in Turkey with 136 high school students. Critical Thinking Tendency Scale (Semerci,2015) and Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (Aydın, Harputlu, Güzel & Genç, 2016) have been used as data collection tools. Data have been analyzed through path analysis and the findings show that there is a positive correlation between critical thinking tendency and foreign language anxiety. It is expected that foreign language teachers consider this finding when designing the classroom activities. Depending on the results of current study, it can be said that low level of FLA is essential in the foreign language classrooms. FLA is not the only variable effecting the foreign language learning environment, so it can be suggested to conduct new research on the effects of other variables along with FLA on foreign language learning environments.

He added that, influenced by libertarian education, leamer autonomy, and Progressive methods, Montessori and Parkhurst were pioneers of approaches that emerged in the 1920s. He stated that the Dalton (Plan) Approach, which started in the USA and is still well-known in many countries, especially in the Netherlands, was created in such an environment. He ended his lecture with an excerpt from Parkhurst's 1922 book, Education on the Dalton Plan: What does a pupil do when giren, as s/he is given by the Dalton Laboratory Plan, responsibility for the performance for such and such work? Instinctively s/he seeks the best way of achieving it. Then having decided, s/he proceeds to act upon that decision... Discussion helps to clarify her/his ideas and also her/his plan of procedure. When s/he comes to the end, the fınished achievement takes on all the splendor of success. İt embodies ali s/he had thought andfelt and lived during the time it has taken to complete. This is real experience. It is culture achieved through individual development and through collective cooperation. It is no longer school-it is life.

and Finland. It focuses on cultural aspects influencing the development of the primary level education in these two countries under the light of various data: archival sources, writings of the time and previous studies. The results indicate that both in Turkey and Finland the school system was reformed after societal changes. In Finland, which was part of Russia till 1917 the school reform was developed after the Crimean War. Decree on primary education was put in action in Finland in 1866 and the law of compulsory education came into force in 1921. The basics of the primary school were built on the writings and suggestions of two men; Uno Cygnaeus and Johan V. Snellman (Cygneaus 1910: Snellman 1993). They formulated the educational guidelines by linking culture and education together. The other aim was to unite the Finns; in 1918 there was a civil war and school had an important role in unifying people after the national crisis. In Turkey, the beginning of the school reform occurred according to the law on compulsory primary school for three to six years old children in Istanbul.
