Investors, policymakers, and social organizations have access to valuable information on the concentration and location of activity. Spatial patterns of tourism have been studied to better organize tourist flows, optimize existing infrastructure, plan new facilities, and promote new destinations. In the late 1960s, the Central Mexican government started projects aimed at constructing large tourism facilities primarily for foreign visitors. These were called centros integralmente planeados or “fully planned centers” (CIP’s) and were headed by Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (National Tourism Promotion Fund) FONATUR. The objective of this study is to explore the spatial distribution patterns of tourism establishments in five municipalities where CIP?s are located. The study uses exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) tools, such as average nearest neighbo...

Although all the metropolitan areas of the country have grown, the size generated by the megalopolis of the Valle de México is especially relevant since it is able to generate more intense agglomeration economies than those of the rest of the urban concentrations. This heterogeneity in the urban structure of the country makes the analysis of the effect of agglomeration economies on productivity for the Mexican case especially interesting. Through a panel model with fixed effects, we studied the effects of agglomeration economies on labor productivity of the manufacturing industry in the metropolitan municipalities of Mexico. We propose an adaptation of the model of Combes (2000) to isolate the effects of localization economies though a specialization index and urbanization economies though an index of economic diversity and occupational density. Our results indicate that specialization and the level of economic diversity...

In the regional context, since 2010 Mexico appears as the second destination of Chinese direct investment directed to manufacturing and as the first destination in the automotive auto parts industry (AAI). The article examines the determinants of Chinese direct investment in Mexico from a regional perspective and from the case study of the Chinese multinational Minth based on Aguascalientes, Mexico. The results allow us to conclude that the growing presence of direct investment by Chinese private companies in the AAI is explained by the favorable prospects for demand generated by the presence of global assemblers in Mexico and geographic and institutional variables such as the proximity whit United States, the agglomeration economies presence and benefits of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

In this work we study such patterns in municipalities and boroughs of Mexico City Metropolitan Area (Zona Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Mexico, ZMCM). The evolution of inequality and polarization in this important area of Mexico is studied with new proposals of measurement using spatially conditioned indexes and through a dynamic transition analysis. The results confirm that the territorial inequality has grown among the municipalities and boroughs that integrate the ZMCM. Moreover, this phenomenon coincides with an increase of the polarization characterized by the formation of four subgroups or convergence clubs.
