Volunteering
Volunteers join our team for a variety of reasons: for personal growth and experience, because they or a loved one suffer from a digestive condition, or because they recognize the importance of our work and want to give back to their community. Here are a few of the different ways that volunteers contribute to the GI Society’s ongoing success.
Leadership
Occasionally, positions arise on the Board of Directors for both the GI Society and the Canadian Society of Intestinal Research. We also have a Medical Advisory Council and special committees for events and fundraising that consist of dedicated, long term volunteers.
Special Events
At special events, such as BadGut® Lectures and fundraisers like the Inside Affair, we require volunteers to help with a variety of tasks such as registering guests, selling raffle tickets, organizing prizes, etc. Volunteers can help with logistics leading up to the event or just on the event day, depending on availability.
National Office Support
The GI Society’s national office in Vancouver requires regular volunteers to fill bulk orders of pamphlets for doctors’ offices and hospitals across the country. Other tasks include preparing the _Inside Tract_® newsletter for mailing, compiling information packages for individuals, stuffing envelopes, stocking shelves, and helping with other administrative tasks as needed.
Support Groups
Support group facilitators lead monthly discussion groups in their communities. These groups are composed of patients, as well as their families and friends, who share the same digestive disease diagnosis. The facilitator is responsible for welcoming members, distributing GI Society educational materials, encouraging participants to share information, keeping the group on topic, and providing a safe, supportive, and open environment for participants. Please contact our office for more information.
