“What are they?” Mel asked, sounding awed. “They’re beautiful!”

“The natives call them frost trees. Don’t get too close though. They’re quite fragile. Too much vibration will shatter them, and you don’t want that.”

“Are they alive?”

“No, they’re accumulations of ice crystals, sculpted by the wind. They only form when the weather conditions are exactly right, but they can last for years if they’re left undisturbed.”

“What would happen if I touched one?” Mel tentatively reached out one hand.

“The whole grove would be destroyed, and we’d be buried in ice shards.”

Mel withdrew her hand. “Better not then.”
