Baerana 3.7: The User's Manual
I live with an 2 great cats, and my soul mate and partner of 17 years - bored2sleep, the man I will be spending the rest of my life with.
I have lots of cool friends I've worked in IT for many years but am now permanently disabled So I do a lot of volunteer F/OSS work, and volunteer on anthropology, sociology, and psychology projects when I can get in. I also do work with animals when my health allows. and I love being able to do this! I'm very happy, and I know I'm very, very lucky!
I will always continue to educate myself, and am currently taking free classes through Yale's online continuing education program. I'm also a bit of an autodidact, and I read everything. I taught myself to read at 4, and have averaged about 1.5 books a day since then. I currently own about 5000 dead tree books and another 5000 e-books.
I use my LJ as tool, for me, to help me with the memory problems my recent health problems have caused, and as a place to work through certain issues, not necessarily to entertain an audience. I talk about difficult and sensitive subjects, including my childhood, health, work issues, things I don't like about myself, and relationship problems. I talk about problems with my boyfriends or friends, with their permission, or else with their identity completely hidden. I am verbose and prolific in my posting, and if you friend me, expect to read a lot about rabbits, as I tend to be somewhat obsessed with them and their welfare
I'm very far left of center, but not a vegetarian (i'm practically a carnivore but I only eat fish, chicken, and beef. No intelligent animals, no animals not raised and slaughtered as humanely as possibly).
Nor am I spiritual - I am an atheist/secular humanist and believe in nothing supernatural - acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy, aromatherapy, spells, magic, distance healing, etc. - nothing that can't be proven to work through at least a semi-scientific method. (If I have to believe in something in order for it to work, you know... I won't.)
I care for the environment, which is why I support nuclear and solar energy. I am a Libertarian in most things. I believe the federal government should exist only to enforce inalienable rights, such as the right to travel between states, and to regulate treaties between states, such as a postal system and common money. Otherwise, it should stay out of our lives! All other responsibilities and rights should fall to the states. Fiscally, I am very liberal. I want good roads, schools, and health care for all, and I don't mind my (state) taxes paying for it. I don't want people to suffer, and if they legitimately can't provide for themselves, the community should help them. I am for same sex marriage rights, I'm more-or-less neutral regarding gun control and I'm anti-drug laws (it's a health issue, not a political issue).
I'm pro-choice and strongly feminist (real feminism, which is about equality, not hating men) And chances are, like it or not, you are a feminist, too!
"Who has turned feminism into a dirty word? One of the things that bugs the shit out of me is the fact that we can't even use the word "feminist" these days. It's been made taboo by a conservative media. The feminist movement in this country is one of the most powerful human liberation movements the planet has seen... so, to let this sort of conservative culture steal the feminist history from our consciousness and steal the respect from the people who fought and died so we could have such liberty is a travesty."
"All decent people, male and female, are feminists. The only people who are not feminists are those who believe that women are inherently inferior or undeserving of the respect and opportunity afforded men. Either you are a feminist or you are a sexist/misogynist. There is no box marked "other"."
- 2 personal quotes from Ani Difranco, aka, Ani D
I agree with the above quotes, but I would amend, that women who think women are superior to men or deserving of special rights aren't feminists, either. Since it IS about equality.
I have tons of hobbies and interests. I collect books, key chains, and toys (mostly Care Bears and Eeyores.) I also have a pressed penny and postcard collection going, so if any of my friends takes a trip, one of those would be the perfect present to bring me! I'm interested in memetics, metaculture, little known holidays, urban legends, gender and women's studies, psychology (my current psychology project is the psychology of lying, including microexpressions), hacking and mind hacking, philosophy, logic and logical arguments, etymology, and on and on. I'm particularly enthralled with fairy tales and mythology, and how those stories effect our social psychology. And, of course, computers.
I love organizing and finding new ways to be more efficient. I think my love for archology's stems from my love of efficiency. I really, REALLY want to live in an archology at some point in my life.
job description:
I'm a consultant with a wide range of interests, so I love the freedom to pick my own projects. I'm a professional organizer/efficiency expert, I write/customize resumes & cover letters, write web apps, help clients find and install pre-existing tools to meet their needs, and more - basically, you have a problem, I help you solve it. I know I'm very lucky to be able to do this.

Linux and BSD administration and kernel internals. Cisco, Riverstone, 3com, and HP networking equipment. And something most geeks are bad at, dealing with people.

I've used linux since 1994(ish) - Slackware 2.1, IIRC. I've since tried most every flavor since then (even Corel Linux, which no one used and was kinda sucky, but came with a cute penguin!) I've really wanted to give more back to the Linux/FOSS community lately, so I've become more active, released more, and joined more communities.
I'm contribute to several linux or f/oss projects, including The Ubuntu Team Wiki, Ubuntu Women,, the Pennsylvania Ubuntu LoCo Team, and Debian-Administration.org. (though, of course, Ubuntu is the OS that has my heart). I also write some of my own projects, and I write articles for geek-friendly websites, including those for newbies and those for more experienced users.
I also do a lot of work in the area of animal (particularly rabbit) welfare.
JL communities I created and maintain:
