In the light of the fact that there are a growing number of new universities emerging in Turkey, research to understand effective practices by academic deans to recruit and support new faculty is critical.

This study aims to examine Anatolian Vocational Health High Schools with the qualities of effecti... more This study aims to examine Anatolian Vocational Health High Schools with the qualities of effective schools, identify areas that these schools can improve, and offer suggestions by using the views of their students, teachers and administrators together with the personnel of the hospitals they are cooperating with. This is a qualitative research and case study method was used. The case was selected by purposive sampling method. Data was collected through semi structured interviews. The finding highlight the deficiencies of the pysical infrastructure. Physical deficincies bring about educational problems, as well. Some of the important results are focused in the areas of the quality of the practicum, quality of the teachers, student motivation, ratio of student and teacher numbers, and lack of the assessment of the skills expected to be gained during the practicum.

Araştırma, tarama modelindedir. Araştırmanın örneklemini, 2018-2019 eğitim öğretim yılında İstanbul ilinde öğrenim gören 105 özel yetenekli, 287 özel yetenek tanısı almamış toplamda 392 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada Liderlik Potansiyeli Ölçeği ve Demografik Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 21.0 programı kullanılmıştır. Analizler sonucunda; özel yetenekli olan öğrencilerin liderlik potansiyeli puanları özel yetenek tanısı almamış öğrencilerin liderlik potansiyeli puanlarından daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Liderlik potansiyeli puanlarının özel yetenekli olan ve özel yetenek tanısı almamış gruplarda yaşa, okul türüne ve anne eğitim durumuna göre farklılaştığı bulunurken; ailedeki çocuk sayısı, okul dışı faaliyete katılma, ekonomik durum değişkenleri açısından ise sadece özel yetenekli grupta farklılaştığı bulunmuştur. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between demographic and technology r... more The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between demographic and technology related variables with Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) of primary school teachers. The participants were 411 primary school teachers in the city of Edirne who volunteered to answer the online data collection instrument. The first part of the instrument consisted of items on demographics and technology use. The second part was the TPACK instrument developed by Schmidt, et.al (2009) and adapted to Turkish by Öztürk and Horzum (2011). The results showed that primary school teachers found themselves competent in TPACK, the ANOVA results show that there was not a significant difference between the level of the last attained degree of the teachers and the factors of TPACK; however, there was a significant difference between some of the factors of TPACK and the other variables: Teachers' TK showed significant difference in relation to gender; male teachers had a higher self-efficacy towards TK. Teachers with experience of 16 years and more found themselves more competent in CK and PCK compared to teachers with 1 to 5 years of experience. In addition, having an in-service training on technology had a positive influence on the development of teachers' TK and CK.

Lack of technology leadership and technology integration plans are important obstacles for using ... more Lack of technology leadership and technology integration plans are important obstacles for using technology effectively in schools. We carried out a large-scale study to be able to design a technology integration plan for one of the pilot provinces that Fatih Project was initiated. The purpose of this research is to examine the perceived challenges and needs of K12 teachers when integrating technology into their classes, which would be used as the needs analysis data of the technology integration plan. A mixed design was used and 844 teachers participated in the study. An online survey was used to gather both the quantitative and qualitative data. The findings showed that there are three major issues for teachers to integrate technology into their instruction: Executive, infrastructural, and instructional. Executive issues are mostly related to managerial and financial challenges, Infrastructural issues include technological and physical challenges, and instructional issues consist of challenges related with instructional materials, students' readiness, and teacher competencies.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggested that inattention was related particularly with reading pro... more OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggested that inattention was related particularly with reading problems among students. However, most of the former studies had clinically referred samples. A majority of the studies conducted with nonreferred samples have evaluated academic achievement with single or a few parent-or teacher-rated items. Almost none of the studies have investigated reading, writing, and mathematics achievements in a single sample. Data from low-and middle-income countries on the subject are exceedingly scarce. Objectives of the present study were to compare actual measurements of reading fluency, reading comprehension, reading and writing errors, mathematics achievement, and teacher ratings of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a single sample. METHODS: Teachers rated ADHD symptoms in a single, nonreferred, population sample (n = 2493) of first-to fourth-grade students with a SNAP-4 rating scale. Actual measurements of reading fluency, reading comprehension, reading and writing errors, and mathematics achievement were also obtained. Fluid IQ was evaluated with Ravens Progressive Matrices. Students were grouped into Predominantly Inattentive (PI), Hyperactive/Impulsive (HI), Combined (C), or control groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Statistical significance was set at p < .003 after correction for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: We showed that after fluid IQ level and gender were controlled, ADHD-PI and ADHD-C groups (but not ADHD-HI) had significantly lower performance in all academic areas. ADHD-PI increased the risk of being in the lowest performing 10th percentile for reading 3 times, for writing more than 3.9 times, and for mathematics more than 6 times. CONCLUSIONS: We investigated the subtype differences in terms of academic achievement between ADHD-PI, ADHD-HI, and ADHD-C, based on teacher reports. Academic achivement data were not based on teacher or parent reports but on the actual performance of the students using standardized tests. Our results suggested that inattention symptoms must be targeted in primary school students in order to help them have academic achievement similar to their peers.

Gender, age, fluid IQ, previous academic level, and teacher reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) total problems score at the first assessment were controlled in an urban low-middle-income-country setting. The follow-up sample with full SDQ data consisted of 967 students (boys: 523, 54.1%; girls: 444, 45.9%) from fifth to eight grades. Using cut-off 7 for SDQ Hyperactivity score for each assessment, the students were categorized into four groups: continued group (CG) (4.4%); declining group (DG) (6.9%); increasing group (IG) (9.0%); and consistently low (LG) group (79.6%). The purpose of this study is to examine the views of teachers on the number and situation of wome... more The purpose of this study is to examine the views of teachers on the number and situation of women in STEM areas as well as ways to encourage female students to STEM areas. We carried out the study through basic qualitative research. The participants of the study included 39 teachers from Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Romania. For data collection, focus group interviews were carried out in each country. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis. The study yielded similar findings in almost all the countries showing that the number of women was not sufficient, and the participants mostly had negative views regarding the visibility of women, gender equality, and societal roles posed to women. We found that female students could be encouraged to STEM areas through the use of appropriate role models who carried some inborn and achieved traits.

Araştırma, tarama yöntemi ile yapılmış nitel bir çalışmadır. İstanbul&#39;da amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilmiş 12 ilkokul, ortaokul ve lisede görev yapan 111 idareci ve öğretmen ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formları ile mülakat yapılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, eğitim yöneticiliğine atanacakların kıdem, yüksek lisans, hizmet içi eğitim, sınav ve mülakat gibi kriterler ile seçilmelerinin yanı sıra, göreve atanmadan önce stajyer yönetici olarak çalışmaları önerilmiştir. Yönetici yetiştirme programının üniversitelerle işbirliği yapılarak teorik ve pratik eğitimden oluşması, yöneticinin kişisel özelliklerini geliştirici eğitimler de alması ve yöneticiliğin bir meslek olarak görülmesinin sağlanması öne çıkan sonuçlardandır. Meslekte geliştirme programında akademik donanım, yönetme sanatı ve kişisel gelişim konusunda gelişime yönelik, vaka çalışmalarının ağırlıklı kullanılacağı eğitimler ve Eğitim Yönetimi doktorası yapılmasına yönelik öneriler de ifade edilmiştir. This is a qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 111 elementary and high school administrators and teachers of 12 schools in İstanbul, selected by purposive sampling method. Data was analyzed with content analysis method. The results suggested that principals should be selected based on their master&#39;s degree, in-service training on management, examination and interview results, and seniority and that they should first be appointed as intern principals. The training program was suggested to be carried out in collaboration with universities and consist of theory and practice in management topics as well as personal development. Participants highlighted that principalship should be seen as a profession. In the professional development phase, results suggested that opportunity should be provided for each administrator to develop their academic and personal qualities and management skills by using case studies and they should be encouraged to get a doctoral degree in Educational Administration. * Bu çalışma, Ferdi Altın&#39;ın Yrd. An international research team was the first to document the educational and mental health needs of Syrian refugee children, finding that an overwhelming majority are not enrolled in school in Turkey, partly as a result of language barriers, and that about half suffer from Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or depression. The present study was designed as an innovative intervention using an online, game-based learning intervention for refugee children, named Project Hope. Data gathered from a controlled field experiment show significant improvements in Turkish language acquisition, coding, executive functioning and overall sense of hopefulness. Implications for policy, practice and research are discussed.

This study focused on accounts of department chairs and the study design was based on qualitative study with the aim of reflecting department chairs' experiences and thoughts on the challenges of being a middle level manager. 13 department chairs from two foundation universities in Turkey were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. Data was analyzed by content analysis method. Their experiences about the challenges of managing the relationships in the hierarchy chain were categorized under the following four themes: 1) building working relationships with upper echelon, 2) building working relationships with the department staff, 3) building working relationships with other department chairs, and 4) the role of the middle manager.

This is a case study where data is collected quantitatively. The case was selected by using purposeful sampling method. 3 of the elementary schools in this school chain located in the same city were included into this study. To collect data, Learning Environments Survey was used. There are 7 factors in the survey: Satisfaction, Principal’s Leadership, Effective Communication, Service Satisfaction, Identity, and Climate. Araştırma, nitel bir durum çalışmasıdır. Amaçlı örneklem yöntemi ile bir Sağlık Meslek Lisesi seçilmiştir. Veri, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formları ile, mülakatlar yapılarak toplanmıştır. The aim of this study is to understand the decision-making processes in higher education institut... more The aim of this study is to understand the decision-making processes in higher education institutions by examining the functions of university senates which is the highest decision making organ in universities. In this study, a mixed design is used. Nine universities located in Istanbul constitute the sample of the study. To collect the qualitative data, document analysis was conducted and the presidents of these universities were asked to send all of the agenda items of the university senate meetings they had held in the 2010-2011 academic year. To collect the quantitative data, the presidents were asked to reply to the open-ended survey that had 2 open-ended questions on the observed functions of the universities. Although university senates are comprised of only academic faculty and described as the academic decision making body by law, the tasks they perform are less limited than it would be expected of the governance models of academic staff observed in some European countries....

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between demographic and technology r... more The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between demographic and technology related variables with Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) of primary school teachers. The participants were 411 primary school teachers in the city of Edirne who volunteered to answer the online data collection instrument. The first part of the instrument consisted of items on demographics and technology use. The second part was the TPACK instrument developed by Schmidt, et.al (2009) and adapted to Turkish by Öztürk and Horzum (2011). The results showed that primary school teachers found themselves competent in TPACK, the ANOVA results show that there was not a significant difference between the level of the last attained degree of the teachers and the factors of TPACK; however, there was a significant difference between some of the factors of TPACK and the other variables: Teachers&#39; TK showed significant difference in relation to gender; male teachers had a higher self-efficacy towards TK. Teachers with experience of 16 years and more found themselves more competent in CK and PCK compared to teachers with 1 to 5 years of experience. In addition, having an in-service training on technology had a positive influence on the development of teachers&#39; TK and CK.

We carried out a large-scale study to be able to design a technology integration plan for one of the pilot provinces that Fatih Project was initiated. The purpose of this research is to examine the perceived challenges and needs of K12 teachers when integrating technology into their classes, which would be used as the needs analysis data of the technology integration plan. A mixed design was used and 844 teachers participated in the study. An online survey was used to gather both the quantitative and qualitative data. The findings showed that there are three major issues for teachers to integrate technology into their instruction: Executive, infrastructural, and instructional. Executive issues are mostly related to managerial and financial challenges, Infrastructural issues include technological and physical challenges, and instructional issues consist of challenges related with instructional materials, students' readiness, and teacher competencies.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggested that inattention was related particularly with reading pro... more OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggested that inattention was related particularly with reading problems among students. However, most of the former studies had clinically referred samples. A majority of the studies conducted with nonreferred samples have evaluated academic achievement with single or a few parent-or teacher-rated items. Almost none of the studies have investigated reading, writing, and mathematics achievements in a single sample. Data from low-and middle-income countries on the subject are exceedingly scarce. Objectives of the present study were to compare actual measurements of reading fluency, reading comprehension, reading and writing errors, mathematics achievement, and teacher ratings of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in a single sample. METHODS: Teachers rated ADHD symptoms in a single, nonreferred, population sample (n = 2493) of first-to fourth-grade students with a SNAP-4 rating scale. Actual measurements of reading fluency, reading comprehension, reading and writing errors, and mathematics achievement were also obtained. Fluid IQ was evaluated with Ravens Progressive Matrices. Students were grouped into Predominantly Inattentive (PI), Hyperactive/Impulsive (HI), Combined (C), or control groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted. Statistical significance was set at p < .003 after correction for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: We showed that after fluid IQ level and gender were controlled, ADHD-PI and ADHD-C groups (but not ADHD-HI) had significantly lower performance in all academic areas. ADHD-PI increased the risk of being in the lowest performing 10th percentile for reading 3 times, for writing more than 3.9 times, and for mathematics more than 6 times. CONCLUSIONS: We investigated the subtype differences in terms of academic achievement between ADHD-PI, ADHD-HI, and ADHD-C, based on teacher reports. Academic achivement data were not based on teacher or parent reports but on the actual performance of the students using standardized tests. Our results suggested that inattention symptoms must be targeted in primary school students in order to help them have academic achievement similar to their peers.

Gender, age, fluid IQ, previous academic level, and teacher reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) total problems score at the first assessment were controlled in an urban low-middle-income-country setting. The follow-up sample with full SDQ data consisted of 967 students (boys: 523, 54.1%; girls: 444, 45.9%) from fifth to eight grades. Using cut-off 7 for SDQ Hyperactivity score for each assessment, the students were categorized into four groups: continued group (CG) (4.4%); declining group (DG) (6.9%); increasing group (IG) (9.0%); and consistently low (LG) group (79.6%). The purpose of this study is to examine the views of teachers on the number and situation of wome... more The purpose of this study is to examine the views of teachers on the number and situation of women in STEM areas as well as ways to encourage female students to STEM areas. We carried out the study through basic qualitative research. The participants of the study included 39 teachers from Turkey, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Romania. For data collection, focus group interviews were carried out in each country. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis. The study yielded similar findings in almost all the countries showing that the number of women was not sufficient, and the participants mostly had negative views regarding the visibility of women, gender equality, and societal roles posed to women. We found that female students could be encouraged to STEM areas through the use of appropriate role models who carried some inborn and achieved traits.

Araştırma, tarama yöntemi ile yapılmış nitel bir çalışmadır. İstanbul&#39;da amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilmiş 12 ilkokul, ortaokul ve lisede görev yapan 111 idareci ve öğretmen ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formları ile mülakat yapılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre, eğitim yöneticiliğine atanacakların kıdem, yüksek lisans, hizmet içi eğitim, sınav ve mülakat gibi kriterler ile seçilmelerinin yanı sıra, göreve atanmadan önce stajyer yönetici olarak çalışmaları önerilmiştir. Yönetici yetiştirme programının üniversitelerle işbirliği yapılarak teorik ve pratik eğitimden oluşması, yöneticinin kişisel özelliklerini geliştirici eğitimler de alması ve yöneticiliğin bir meslek olarak görülmesinin sağlanması öne çıkan sonuçlardandır. This is a qualitative study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 111 elementary and high school administrators and teachers of 12 schools in İstanbul, selected by purposive sampling method. Data was analyzed with content analysis method. The results suggested that principals should be selected based on their master&#39;s degree, in-service training on management, examination and interview results, and seniority and that they should first be appointed as intern principals. The training program was suggested to be carried out in collaboration with universities and consist of theory and practice in management topics as well as personal development. Participants highlighted that principalship should be seen as a profession. In the professional development phase, results suggested that opportunity should be provided for each administrator to develop their academic and personal qualities and management skills by using case studies and they should be encouraged to get a doctoral degree in Educational Administration. * Bu çalışma, Ferdi Altın&#39;ın Yrd. An international research team was the first to document the educational and mental health needs of Syrian refugee children, finding that an overwhelming majority are not enrolled in school in Turkey, partly as a result of language barriers, and that about half suffer from Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or depression. The present study was designed as an innovative intervention using an online, game-based learning intervention for refugee children, named Project Hope. Data gathered from a controlled field experiment show significant improvements in Turkish language acquisition, coding, executive functioning and overall sense of hopefulness. Implications for policy, practice and research are discussed.

This study focused on accounts of department chairs and the study design was based on qualitative study with the aim of reflecting department chairs' experiences and thoughts on the challenges of being a middle level manager. 13 department chairs from two foundation universities in Turkey were interviewed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. Data was analyzed by content analysis method. Their experiences about the challenges of managing the relationships in the hierarchy chain were categorized under the following four themes: 1) building working relationships with upper echelon, 2) building working relationships with the department staff, 3) building working relationships with other department chairs, and 4) the role of the middle manager.

The aim of this study is to understand the decision-making processes in higher education institut... more The aim of this study is to understand the decision-making processes in higher education institutions by examining the functions of university senates which is the highest decision making organ in universities. In this study, a mixed design is used. Nine universities located in Istanbul constitute the sample of the study. To collect the qualitative data, document analysis was conducted and the presidents of these universities were asked to send all of the agenda items of the university senate meetings they had held in the 2010-2011 academic year. To collect the quantitative data, the presidents were asked to reply to the open-ended survey that had 2 open-ended questions on the observed functions of the universities. Although university senates are comprised of only academic faculty and described as the academic decision making body by law, the tasks they perform are less limited than it would be expected of the governance models of academic staff observed in some European countries....
