As a result of the US Senate's passage of the Black Sea Security Act as part of the National Defense Authorization Act in July 2023, the Black Sea region was designated as important to US national security. All this requires the development and implementation of adequate strategies to achieve American goals in this area. In addition to the Russian Federation, the law also includes China with its economic policy, which is defined as subversive towards the countries of the region. That makes the Black Sea Security Act also a component of Washington's overall strategy against Beijing in Europe.

All that has brought to the fore the need to develop a robust and, above all, workable strategy in the economic, political, energy, and military spheres to protect US interests there. To date, the Black Sea occupies a central position in the military-political confrontation between the United States/NATO and Russia, necessitating increased efforts to deter the Kremlin, in an area that will become increasingly militarized and contested in the future.

Forward defense become particularly relevant in connection with the rearmament and integration of the Federal Republic of Germany into Western European defense structures and the first enlargement of the Alliance to the Balkans, along with attempts to build a stable front/barrier against the Eastern Bloc and the USSR in the first half of the 1950s. Unlike nuclear weapons, the use of which would cause enormous destruction in depth, this defense concept enjoys serious attention (especially in Athens), allowing in the event of war to preserve most of the territory. The implementation of forward defense is associated with the presence of large conventional forces, but in the defense of the Southern Flank the Alliance could not allocate the necessary resources and therefore relies on local forces and the conclusion of the Balkan Pacts of 1953/1954 follows this model. The paradox in this case is that forward defense is made possible by the evolution of NATO's strategy (1953-1954) towards the widespread use of tactical nuclear weapons.

This led to the extension of United States security interests at the periphery of the Soviet bloc in Europe, militarization of NATO, and highlighted the need for „containment“ based on system of alliances. These circumstances create conditions for the formation of a system of collective security in Southeastern Europe, including not only Greece, Turkey, and Yugoslavia, but Italy as well.

during the Cold War falls on the main aspects of the economic, political and cultural domains. The topic of Austria in the pages of the newspaper Rabotnichesko delo (“Worker’s Deed”), which was the printed organ of the Bulgarian Communist Party, has not been a subject of any research until now. The chosen time frame makes it possible to follow both the policy of the Soviet Union towards Austria from the beginning of the Korean War until the death of Stalin, but also how the country’s image gradually changed on the pages of the Bulgarian press, again in relation to Kremlin’s tactics after 1956 against the background of Kremlin’s peaceful coexistence policy.

Th e transition fr om George Kennan’s concept to NSC68 and the war in Korea led to the extension of US security interests at the periphery of the Soviet
world. Th e need for strong conventional means under the “new circumstances” in the world requires rapprochement between Greece and Yugoslavia. Th ese two countries (together with Italy and Turkey) had to be part of the “western chain”, that had to deal with every attempt of local aggression in the area of the Eastern Mediterranean.
