The Avalon lodge burned this afternoon into the evening.

It started with the fireplace--something with the chimney and where it connects with the ceiling. The details are still sketchy.

Everyone got out okay and there were no injuries, but apparently the big dining area, kitchen, and most of the lodge rooms are a total loss. In pulling down the burning structure the fire personnel which came from five different stations, damaged the pole with the main transformer for this area.

All I knew before I left work by a Telegram from Renee was that the power was out and she hoped it would be back on by the time I got home. As I got closer to home, I had hopes we were back on because nearby houses on Critton Owl Hollow were lit and obviously not just with emergency lighting.

But by the time I got to the gate at Wild Apple, it was wide open and there was obviously no security lighting. Then I glanced over through the trees to Avalon and could see a multitude of flashing red and white lights, even up on Pond Road. I got home and greeted Renee and said there's something going on over at Avalon, and that's when she filled me in on the sad story. The power here came back on about 90 minutes ago.

We're assuming they have insurance for this sort of thing, but of course there would be all the rebuilding. The lodge rooms were sold out for this evening, but of course they had to send everyone home. It's sad, because Avalon was just coming back from the brink, and had turned the corner and the future looked pretty good. Now, we just don't know. We'll have to see what the news is in the coming days.
