Like other ethnic groups, Native Americans encounter many hardships and discriminations, such as cultural and physical assimilations in the white dominant American system. Ancestors of Native people are known for their long and robust history because their traditions are based upon strong and unifying family values. Because of respecting their past and family traditions, Indigenous people construct their communal way of life, and America is against this notion with its individualistic outlook towards life. Thus, throughout history, there have always been great clashes between the whites and Native people. Besides, many debates have existed about the relationship between Native Americans and Turks throughout history. From which perspectives does Louise Erdrich reflect the Native American motifs in Love Medicine? What is the essential relation between the Native Americans and the Turks? How does Erdrich approach the history of Native Americans? This study sheds light on these questions with the close similarities between the Turkish and American cultures.

This literary movement emerged in the 1950s as a response to the time's oppressive and conservative societal norms, including the fear of nuclear war, the rise of consumerism, and the stifling conformity of the Cold War era. Ginsberg's literary voice captured the essence of this movement, expressing its countercultural values through his descriptions and language, which were often explicit and straightforward. This study examines "Howl" through the lens of Lefebvre's Spatial Theory, which provides a critical framework for analyzing the spatial dimensions of social life. By applying Lefebvre's theory, this analysis reveals the spatial dimensions of the poem, including the relationship between space and time and the relationship between poetry and language. The use of spatial theory in literary analysis offers a unique perspective on the social and cultural context of the time, providing insights into how spatial and ideological power relations are reflected in literature. This study will contribute to a sociological commentary on American literature as it explores the role of space and place in the production and reception of literary works. It also provides an analytical framework for understanding the spatial dimensions of social life in 1950s America.

Not only sexual harassment but also a patriarchal society oppress their physical and psychological state of mind. Heather Raffo’s 9 Parts of Desire is an excellent symbol for indicating how diverse women portray different identities and experiences. However, each of them fights for one thing: love. Patriarchal regulations, with their clothing rules or religious restrictions, create limited space for Iraqi women in the play, and the women search for liberation throughout the play. Some escape from their home countries, and some stay and fight for freedom. However, each character in the play struggles bravely against difficulties. This study will examine these women regarding identity, racial, and gender theories. From these approaches, the gender theory will uncover the essence of the play due to dealing with nine women’s search for desire. The space reflects these women with lyrical statements, so the theatrical play must be narrated in a poetic monologue. Using the theories of Homi Bhabha, Stuart Hall, and Julia Kristeva, the study creates authentic perspectives in Middle Eastern American Drama.

Throughout history, African Americans have experienced many troubles, such as segregation and discrimination in various areas. However, their literature shows a significant resistance to all the troubles in history. Numerous writers and artists explore themes such as African American culture, racism, religion, slavery, and a sense of homelessness, one of whom is Zora Neale Hurston. Besides her race, she is also a woman, so she is both a woman and a colored person at the bottom of the social ladder. Thus, Their Eyes Were Watching God is not only a source of race but also gender. This paper sheds light on the importance of Zora Neale Hurston in African American literature, and the study will be supported by other famous Afro-American writers’ articles and statements. Why is she so important? From which perspectives did she contribute to African American literature? Why was her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God mostly criticized? This novel, being important in the field of Black Feminism, concerns the hardships of black women
racially and sexually. This study will answer these questions with examples from Zora Neale Hurston’s autobiographical novel Dust Tracks on a Road: An Autobiography (1984), Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), and Alice Walker’s article “In Search of Zora Neale Hurston” (1975).

It explicitly sheds light on Eleni Sikelianos's poems in Body Clock with two different theorists such as Kristeva and Egan. Eleni Sikelianos' (1965-) both visual and verbal narrative style attribute an authentic outlook for readers, and they see the power of her performative style. The process of giving birth is narrated so creatively that when people read her poems, they will understand how life is a meaningful thing. The study will start with the life of Eleni Sikelianos, who is the author of Body Clock which reveals the idea of birth, womanhood, imaginative mind, and so on. Secondly, Body Clock is explained with its main concepts such as time, biology, motherhood including the growth of body and birth, and her drawings. The third part of the study will examine the poems of Body Clock from the perspective of Julia Kristeva's Desire in Language: A Semiotic Approach to Literature and Art. This analysis will concern four theoretical backgrounds: "the speaking/ split subject," "semiotic chora & symbolic device," "maternal body/ drive," and "poetic language/carnivalesque." In the fourth section of the paper, Body Clock is analyzed in terms of three concepts such as the mirror conception, body status and language in control of meaning in Mirror Talk: Genres of Crisis in Contemporary Autobiography written by Susanna Egan.

America hosts many hybrid cultures and one of them is the Arab American identity. These people suffer from many hardships not only because of their religious differences, but also their traditional alienation to American culture. This paper will analyze the Egyptian-American playwright Yussef El Guindi's play Ten Acrobats in An Amazing Leap of Faith (2018), presenting the fear and anxiety for the unknown culture in an Arab American family who struggle with identity problems and the American lifestyle. The concept of in-betweenness will be analyzed in each character and as Stuart Hall mentioned in his theory, this study will carry out "the eye of the needle of the other before it can construct itself" (1996, p. 89). As for identity framework, each character will be examined in terms of identity, gender and religious perspectives. The hardships of each character throws light on various commentaries in relating to the identity analyses and this study will explicitly show how the concept of identity will be shown with different Arab Americans. The cultural conflict is understood with Arab American identities that captivated the hegemonic Americanized thought system in America. While analyzing all characters in the play, this study will present how El Guindi reflects upon the lives of in-between Arab Americans with various issues such as religion, gender and race. While studying themes such as identity, religion, gender and race, the framework will be considered according to the theorists like Homi Bhabha, Stuart Hall, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari.

Research paper thumbnail of The Analysis of “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan from the Perspective of Ethnic Autobiography

Bartın Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi, 2022

Ethnic minorities in America are always in the search of identity because of being far away from ... more Ethnic minorities in America are always in the search of identity because of being far away from their cultural and traditional practices. In this process, they try to construct their identities within the connections to their past and present together. At that point, ethnic autobiography creates an insightful perspective in that it presents the existing links among the members of a community: a common past, and a political project for the future of that community. (Renán, 1990,19) There are many ethnic groups living in America, and one of them is the Chinese Americans. America is like a mosaic with various ethnic groups living there. This study will seek “Mother Tongue” written by Amy Tan in the light of ethnic autobiographical considerations. This autobiographical source indicates how the language creates boundaries and it pushes characters into silence. This silence is a kind of psychological loneliness and cultural alienation. Tan closely experiences the otherness with her ethnic difference and she uses the genre of ethnic autobiography while narrating her personal memories because the real issues always affect the readers more deeply. Besides the sociological concerns such as language, it also explores the life of Tan with her own personal expressions. Thus, it is a kind of sociological, cultural and biographical text, and it also deals with multi-dimensional critical outlooks. It is also a great example inside protest literature because it criticizes ethnic discrimination with the examples from the life of Chinese American. From which perspectives does “Mother Tongue” approach the ethnic issue? How do the Chinese-Americans suffer from hardships in American society? What does the identity of Chinese-Americans mean for themselves? This paper tries to light on these questions in the framework of different ethnicities in America.

This approach poses a great threat to the world in that the extensive misuse of natural sources affects each part of life. The deforestation, nuclear threat and torturing of animals are the essential problems of modern world, and the cycle of the mother earth becomes disordered ecological disaster at the end. As regarding to these issues, there arose new theories of analyzing the environmental subjects as the central point, and it is called as Ecocriticism. Ecocriticism is a well-known movement which deals with ecocritical outlook to the literary texts in the opposition of anthropocentrism. This paper seeks to reveal how the story "Zoogoing" written by Lydia Millet brings ecocritical literacy towards the rights of animals, especially predators. It analyzes the story from the anthropocentric and ecocentric aspects. This story provides to understand the eco-conscious process within animals and human's reactions. Thus, it is an interpretive ecocritical analysis of animals inside zoo and their instinctual behaviors towards the humankind. At that point, human behaviors and its perception towards animals construct a crucial analysis in Ecocriticism.

The inter-relation between painting and poetry is called ekphrasis, which can be simply explained as the linguistic projection of visual art. Heffernan (1939-) defines this term as “the verbal representations of visual representations.” In addition to ekphrasis, this thesis aims to analyze the eleven poems of Williams in terms of structural, symbolic and thematic approaches. The primary source of this study is the poetry book, Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (1962) by Williams who has reflected upon the paintings of Brueghel. The first part of this study will focus on Williams’ poetic life in order to understand the ekphrastic nature of his selected poems. For instance, when did Williams’ interest for visual art start? Where did he acquire the idea that revealed the paintings of Bruegel in the embodiment of words? What did it mean to analyze Brueghel’s paintings? All these questions and more will be answered in the research. This thesis focuses not only on the poet, Williams and his poetic revelations, but also on Brueghel’s artistic perspectives and concerns. The research aims to construct versatile experiences and enrich new dimensions in readers.

Given its multinational composition, the United States serves as a valuable example showcasing the circumstances and impacts on children from ethnic minority groups. Historically, racism reached its peak throughout the Civil Rights Era (1954-1968), during which many African American writers struggled within the suppressed spaces filled with brutal discrimination and racial disparities in American society. Jacqueline Woodson (1963-) stands out as a significant author in the realm of African American picture books in the United States, having encountered racist discourses and practices throughout her life. Consequently, her picture books reflect her personal experiences. The theoretical part of this study presents how picture books shape the minds of Black children within the context of racial theories. In this regard, the doctoral dissertation will analyze thirteen of Jacqueline Woodson's picture books through the lens of two distinct theoretical approaches. All these books have been examined using frameworks such as Racial Identity Theory and Critical Race Theory. This dissertation will thus present an analysis of picture books not only for African American children but also for children from other young age groups.
