Aim: This review aims at drawing attention to the importance of emotional labour in nursing. Method: The access to the resources has been provided by searching for "nursing", "emotional labour” and “emotional labour strategies” keywords in both Turkish and English languages in Google Academic, YÖK Thesis, Medline and ScienceDirect databases. Results: Emotional labour is defined as the management of the feelings in workplace. Emotional labour aims to change the customer's feelings and is accepted as a kind of labour, like physical and mental labour. Nursing is considered as one of the professions that include substantial amount of emotional labour. In the regulation of emotions, the framework is formed by the emotional display rules determined by the organizations. The change in emotional labour may either be towards making customers feel good or making them feel bad. There are three types of emotional regulation strategies pursued by employees. In surface acting, an employee focuses only on modifying the outward expressions and deceiving others about how s/he really feels. In contrast, deep acting involves attempting to regulate their inner feelings in order to feel the desired emotions. Sometimes an employee does not try to seem happy or sad but rather expresses emotions spontaneously. This is called genuine emotion. Upon reviewing the consequences of emotional labour (job satisfaction, burnout, intention to leave etc.), it has been suggested that it has both negative and positive effects on organizations and employees. Conclusion: As a result, emotional labour is a component of nursing which must not be ignored and has to be taken into account by health institutions in the managerial processes.
