Food needs and nutritional adequacy of the community can be met if the quality of rice increases, so the goal of food self-sufficiency can be realized. The policy of importing rice should immediately end by providing premium-quality rice so that major food needs can be provided. Rice production in Indonesia should be continuously improved to balance with the increasing of growth population every year. Various efforts have been made such as improving the quality of rice to provide better results. The research objectives were selection and evaluation of rice varieties through participatory plant breeding with rice field farmer respondents. Rice farmers from Cibinong, Bogor and surrounding areas were asked to provide an assessment of the morphological characteristics of cross rice crops. The research objectives were selection and evaluation of rice varieties through participatory plant breeding with rice field farmer respondents. Rice farmers from Cibinong, Bogor and surrounding areas were asked to provide an assessment of the morphological characteristics of cross rice crops. The highest assessment result was P3 strain (402) selected by 15 farmers, then P1 (275) selected by 11 farmers. The most preferred varieties of rice are Limboto and IR 64.

Genetically Engineered Plants (GEPs) as the product of modern technology requires an excellent management strategies especially for the biosafety of the products before being released to commercialized to the public. This study aims determine the policy priorities in making the right decisions in order to GEPs management could be more effective and sustainable while reducing the side effects of this technology to the environment and human health. System analysis approach to take decisions using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM). The outputs of possible policy making based on expert justifications were divided into four (4) levels, i.e.: Focus, Factor, Criteria and Alternative way level. The synthesized of experts justifications on environmental, economic, social and technological factors, give a nearly equal (eigen) values to the previous four levels, so they are concluded in having the same priority in managing of GEPs. The gene flow of GEPs to non GEPs was the most important element to be considered with the eigen values 0.278. The increase of farmer's income with eigen values 0.358 is considered as the most important criteria of economic factor. GEPs safety to human health (0.464) is the preferred social elements. Last but not least, the human resource capability in doing biosafety test (0.580) was the most important criteria for the technology factor. Based on the alternatives compiled by the experts, law enforcement elements of the rules must be done by 0.187 eigen valuescompared with other alternatives. Also based on ISM (Interpretative Structural Modeling) quadrant matrix, alternative elements are scattered into three quadrants; dependence, linkage and independent.

Transgenic rice cv. Rojolele (Line 6.11 ±), containing genes cry (IA (b)) of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis was advanced to the seventh generations, and tested at a limited field test in Indramayu, West Java, compared to Cisadane, Ciherang, and IR64. A non-transformed of Rojolele cultivar was used as an isogenik line control and was planted as border rows. This study was carried out to meet biosafety requirements of the biological environment, and followed all regulations stipulated in the Guidelines of Biosafety Genetic Engineering Products of Plants Series. Observation was made on the non-target insects and natural enemies in the field. Results indicated that non-target insects, including whiteback plant hopper (WPP) (Sogatella furcifera), brown hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) and Cnaphalocrosis medinalis, were found in the field, with different levels of population. Increasing cases of degenerative diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer have triggered people to look for functional food ingredients, especially local resource-based food sources in each region to explore the benefits and nutritional content of health. Arrowroot (Maranta arundinaceae L.) is an alternative crop-source of carbohydrate with enormous potential to be developed. Flour products from arrowroot plant have special features, which are easy to digest because the content of the glycemic index (IG) is low so it is very good for health. This plant is generally propagated by vegetation, so it has a narrow genetic diversity. Various efforts have been made to improve the genetic diversity of arrowroot plants, in order to obtain superior types of arrowroot plants with high productivity. This study aims to understand and explore the primacy of arrowroot p...

The research objective was to determine the sustainability of Bt rice plant based on attributes that construct the dimensions of ecological, economic, social, technological and institutional law. Analysis of the data used Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS), and the results were expressed in the index form of sustainable management of GEP. Results of the study showed that the sustainability of multidimensional GEP Bt rice corresponds to the criteria of fair with the value 58.99%, except for the technological dimension with the value of 46.71%, which was classified as less sustainable. In addition, lists of value for other dimensions are: 73.02% for environmental dimension, 69.3% for economic dimension, 51.22% for social dimension, 54.74% for institution and law dimension, and 46.71% for technology dimension that was on less sustainable value. The results also showed ten leverage factors that might affect the increasing the sustainability index of all dimensions. These factors are: environmental dimensions (possibility of crossing genetic materials from GE crops to non-GE crops), economic dimensions (farmers dependency to GE crops, affordable price of GEP seed), social dimensions (informations of GEP, public perception and acception, public participation in decision making), technology dimensions (number of GE plants from internal R&D, capacity building in research and assessment of GEP), institutions and law dimensions (implementation of regulations, GEP labelling). It needs to be developed to reduce the dependence on imports or to substitute wheat flour. The objective of the study was to obtain superior arrowroot seedlings and observe the effect of gamma-ray irradiation on the density and position of stomata on arrowroot leaves. In this research, the irradiation of five arrowroot accessions of second-generation (MV1) with gamma rays (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 Gray) was carried out to obtain mutants with superior character so that they could be used as parent plants for arrowroot flour production. The treatments administered were arrowroot accessions (V), gamma-ray radiation dose (R), and their interaction. The qualitative and quantitative characters on plant characteristics, tuber production, and arrowroot leaves' stomata were observed. The research results showed that increased production is pri...

However, the commercially attainable yields are very low compared to other food crops. Somatic embryogenesis has the great potential for rapid and efficient regeneration of plantlets and offers opportunities for large-scale production of plant material. Genetic modification on embryogenic structure offers the opportunity to add desirable gene characteristic. The objective of this study was to evaluate the different medium combination for the induction and optimization of embryogenic formation from immature male flowers. The explants of inflorescence was sampled one month after bunch emergence and approximately 15-20 cm below the last female flower hand. Response of explants and percentage of inflorescence clusters forming nodular callus were recorded and noted. Result of the experiment showed that embryogenic callus could be induced from immature male flowers. The initiation of callus i...
