Nelson Portillo | Boston College (original) (raw)
Currently I am an Assistant Professor of the Practice at Boston College. Most of my research has focused on social issues that affect youth's positive development. My main areas of interest are youth violence, community violence prevention programs, especially youth mentoring initiatives, youth and public policy, and undocumented migration to the United States among Salvadoran youth.
After receiving a bachelor's degree in psychology from UCA, I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to pursue my graduate studies (MA and PhD) in social psychology at Loyola University Chicago. In 2008, I completed my doctorate and received a best poster award for my doctoral work from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI; Division 9 of the American Psychological Association) during the 2008 Biennial Convention. That same year I started working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Institute for Health Research and Policy (IHRP) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) until 2010. I also worked at the University of Central America (UCA) in the Department of Sociology and Political Sciences during 2011, and at Don Bosco University from 2012 to mid 2013.
In 2010, I helped launch the Salvadoran Journal of Psychology and became its first editor. More recently, in 2011, I was elected as the regional Vice-President for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean of the Interamerican Psychological Society (IPS) for the 2011-2013 period. I currently serve as Associate Editor of the Interamerican Journal of Psychology.

Objective: To examine the psychometric properties of the MOS Perceived Social Support Questionnaire among the Mexican population in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Non-experimental cross-sectional study. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the Medical Outcomes Study were applied in a non-probabilistic sample. A total of 898 people from different regions in Mexico, 258 males and 640 females, participated in the study in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The analysis yielded a bi-factor model with two factors, Emotional/informational support and Tangible support, with satisfactory goodness of fit indices. Reliability was adequate with a high hierarchical omega coefficient, as well as in the factors. Likewise, the H ...

In particular, scientists have identified several symptoms that are likely to persist for a few weeks or even months. These symptoms are not only physiological, pulmonary, cardiovascular, muscular, and the like, but also psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric. 1−4 The World Health Organization provided a special classification of the disease in September 2020, and a clinical definition in October 2021.

The roots of both his great ingenuity and sensitivity are explored in this article from the perspective of a personal journey taken by the author in preparation for a full-fledged biography about him. Although still a work in progress, the current essay provides a detailed sketch of Martín-Baró's life as informed by interviews with relatives, colleagues, and close friends as well as extensive reviews of archival material, including Martín-Baró's personal and family records. It sheds light on the intricate connections between vital experiences of Martín-BaróЈs life and his thought and choices as a social scientist. The impact of Martín-Baró's life and his legacy on the author is also described. A photo collage that covers his life, since his childhood, accompanies this essay.
