masterrobyn: EDITORIAL from the Bellingham Comics Bugle (http://bcbugle.com)

Hey there, True Believers!

Sorry that your keen comics paper hasn't been updated in a while, but you should know that your loyal staff is working hard on bringing you new artists, a new print edition of the paper and updates to this website. For some of us, this continues to be a long road, but we think you're worth it!

Remember, you can always send questions or comments to us, just drop us an email!

Excelsior!

mcjulie: Some thoughts I had after print issue 1

Hey, all. I had some thoughts about future issues of the Bugle that I wanted to throw out there for discussion.

1. We need a proofing/layout workflow that gets more of us ostensibly editing the thing involved. More creative minds = more good ideas. More
eyes = better proofreading. More involvement = more fun!

2. I thought that a good use for the cover would be several teasers rather than a single complete comic. When I update my web site I use teaser images of the latest comic on the front page -- usually a small slice of the image really blown up. I have had people tell me that they like the teasers -- they like guessing where the image is going to come up. So for the cover I think isolated panels or even just character drawings could have a similar effect and entice people to pick up the issue. Sort of an "inside this issue" thing. We could have teasers for articles too, just a sentence or two taken out of context.

3. I think the Bugle needs more written editorial content. Essays, articles, reviews, and one column that is always about what BS of Comics folk have been up to (coverage of the 24-hour comic, for example). This first issue feels a little sparse -- LOTS of white space and it doesn't take very long to read through the whole thing. One thing about comics is that people can read them very fast. We want to make people slow down a bit. Mixing comics and longer text articles is a good way to do that.

4. Following on point 3, I would like to see more variety in comic sizes and layout. This issue really emphasizes comics that take up the whole page -- not everyone's comic needs to be laid out that way, and when it's possible to mix it up, I'd like to do that. For example, Robyn's comic is essentially three episodes -- they don't necessarily need to be all on the same page. I would also love to see things like sketchbook drawings and little mini comics (like Sergio Aragones) in the margins.

Thoughts? Additions? Let's talk.

skellington1: Someone had better be laughing!

Butch & Spike will not be appearing in this week's online Bugle, the first time I haven't had something to put in that spot since I started running it in January.

I invite you all over to the Butch & Spike site to see why.

After all, it's not a tragedy if someone gets enjoyment out of it, right?

I only swore once, too, which I think is admirable self restraint.
