- ๐ฆพ Discover NerveRepack, a Chips JU project! ๐ฌ "The NerveRepack neural prosthesis will help the amputees to regain most of the motor functions in manipulating daily objects in a natural way by using the nervous paths, motion reflexes and motion abilities that they already known, due to the direct connection of the prosthesis to the patientโs nervous system. In few years, we hope that NerveRepack prosthesis will be available to the millions of amputees around the world"

NerveRepack - a research project funded by Chips Joint Undertaking , Horizon Europe - Episode 1: Myoelectric #prosthesis versus neural #prosthesisWhen a patient has lost his/her hand, the functions and abilities offered by that hand are completely gone. From practical perspectives, a #prosthesis is expected to act similarly to the limb it replaces, in as many functions as possible, not only in movement possibilities and control, but also regarding the sensory experience. However, the best performing #prostheses manufactured nowadays are far from reaching the abilities of a biologically healthy hand. Most of the #prostheses on the market have myoelectric actuation (are commanded with signals acquired from the muscles that remained in the amputation stump) and they offer only a limited range of movements. Why is this happening? Because the movements of the palm and fingers of a healthy hand are controlled by 22 muscles, and during a forearm amputation surgery a large part of these muscles are removed. The remaining muscles may be only the ones that control a limited range of movements of the hand and fingers. Having only the myoelectric signals from these muscles to control the prosthesis, one cannot expect great results. Unlike myoelectric prostheses, neural prostheses are intended to be controlled by the patient with neural motor signals acquired from the stump nerves. These signals are not totally affected by the amputation, because they are directly related to the brain activity that commands the movements. Therefore, the neural signals of an amputated limb contain all the information related to a movement: range, speed, direction, etc. If we will have access to this information, we can reconstruct a large variety of movements. Until now, the acquisition of motor neural signals from different motor fascicles of the stump nerves, was not done, due to various reasons, both medical and technical. And this is what we hope that NerveRepack will bring to reality, due to neural implants that will be discussed in next episodes. The NerveRepack neural prosthesis will help the amputees to regain most of the motor functions in manipulating daily objects in a natural way by using the nervous paths, motion reflexes and motion abilities that they already known, due to the direct connection of the prosthesis to the patientโs nervous system. In few years, we hope that NerveRepack prosthesis will be available to the millions of amputees around the world (according to Amputee Coalition statistics, in USA only there are 2 million people who live with limb loss.) - ๐ฃ The application deadline for the Quantum Pilots calls is approaching! ๐ Submit your application by 21 January via the Funding & Tenders Portal and contribute to the future of quantum technologies.
