About us
The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) brings together 130.000 municipalities, cities and regions federated through 60 national associations from 41 European countries. It therefore constitutes the most representative association of local and regional governments in Europe. Its work is organised around two main pillars: - Influencing European policy and legislation in all areas having an impact on local and regional governments; - Providing a forum for debate and cooperation for elected representatives and experts from our 60 member associations. CEMR’s members are national associations of local and regional governments, whose own members are municipalities, cities and regions in their country. CEMR is also the European section of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), through which it represents European local and regional governments at international level. 📍While the negotiations on the contents of the UN Pact for the future enter their “hot phase”, the UN Secretary General meets with Mayors from all over the world 🌎 in NY and acknowledges the paradox of today’s multilateral system - while local governments play the most important role in changing the life of citizens, they have no official role in the decision making process within our current multilateral system. This is something we have to address urgently. Indeed an honest and lucid analysis from Antonio Gutierrez. Well done to UCLG and the Global task force for all the work they are doing to secure a role for local and regional governments in the UN Pact for the future 🙏 - 📊 #LocalDataTuesdayDid you know that local authorities represent one-third of public spending and two-thirds of public investment in the EU? 🚀 According to the OECD - OCDE, there is still a large investment gap at the subnational level. Local and Regional Governments can drive sustainable economic growth in Europe. 🌍 To digitalise, decarbonise, and enhance Europe’s defence capacity, public investment must increase by around 5% of GDP, as highlighted in Mario Draghi's report on the future of European Competitiveness presented today in Strasbourg.
