This morning, the European Parliament voted on the European Commission’s proposal to delay the application of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) by 12 months. MEPs also voted on nine new amendments, proposed by European People's Party, thay would allow huge volumes of forest-destroying products to continue to be sold in the EU. The delay and eight amendments were approved, despite businesses and citizens’ strong support for the EUDR. Our campaigner Julia Christian comments on the vote’s outcome: “The EUDR has been held hostage by conservative forces determined to show that they now wield the power in Parliament: a right-wing alliance prepared to sacrifice forests for political gain. In forcing through substantial proposed changes to the law, the European People’s Party (EPP) has disregarded democratic principles, undermined the EU’s credibility, and taken an axe to Europe’s efforts to end deforestation in its supply chains.” All eyes are now on the Commission, which has the right to withdraw its proposal to delay the law. Read our take on the new risk-rating category, losing forest degradation from the scope and the spectacular reversal of the EPP’s position here: https://lnkd.in/dCEcUEYW - 🆕 The latest issue of our #ForestWatch newsletter is out! 👉 The EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) is under attack from the European People’s Party (#EPP), the same parliamentary group that pushed it through two years ago. This week, the European Parliament will vote on the Commission’s proposal to postpone the EU #Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) by 12 months: As Nicole Polsterer writes, a vote in favor would be disastrous for #forests and undermine the EU's green leadership role. 👉 The European Commission is presently considering copying Renewable Energy Directive (#RED) rules to measure #CarbonRemovals in the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF). The Renewable Energy Directive considers burning wood for #bioenergy as 'net-zero', while, in reality, it significantly increases forest destruction and climate damage. Today, EU #biomass combustion emissions represent 15.7% of the EU’s total emissions. The CRCF must not learn from this legalised fiction, but be agreed after rigorous research, says Martin Pigeon. 👉 In #Finland, logging company Stora Enso has restarted logging in an area where they destroyed the habitats of rare species. Siim Kuresoo stresses that, with the #biodiversity and climate stakes so inexpressibly high, compliance with nature protection rules must not be left to the voluntary cooperation of private industry. 👉 This month's partner article focuses on the work of Eastern European NGOs to protect their forests, which are currently being severely degraded, putting their unique biodiversity and the climate at risk. In #Romania, NGOs are petitioning the government to grant temporary protection to an important biodiverse area of forest currently under threat, while in #Ukraine, campaigners are building on a successful campaign to save the Carpathian forests by trying to turn it into a nature reserve. 🆕 EU flagship #BECCS project will burn forests and public funds but is unlikely to help the climate! Our latest report investigates the largest Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (#BECCS) project in Europe, developed by the Swedish company Stockholm Exergi. The analysis shows that, despite already receiving €180 million in EU funding and being promised much more from the Swedish government, Stockholm Exergi has not yet found suitable underground storage for the carbon it wants to capture. The company’s final investment decision is expected before the end of 2024, and will depend on how much government support it can collect. 👉 The report also found that cutting Sweden’s annual wood harvest by just 0.8% would capture as much CO2 as Stockholm Exergi's costly BECCS project! While BECCS burns biomass and buries CO2 to claim "negative emissions," it actually removes carbon from #forests, not the atmosphere, while healthy forests actually remove carbon from the air! 🚨 BREAKING: the Green Deal's destruction has begun and it starts with the anti-#deforestation law under attack by a new conservative-far right majority. Let's take a step back: the EU anti deforestation law, adopted last year is a crucial policy that will curb global deforestation and human rights abuses. The regulation entered into force in 2023 and originally required companies to start complying on December 30, 2024. BUT, a few weeks ago, under the pressure of conservatives, the European Commission put forth a legislative proposal to delay enforcement by 12 months. The 1 year delay was supposed to be the only change to the regulation but last week, Christine Schneider, a conservative MEP tabled amendments that would significantly weaken the law and delay it by 2 years! The vote will take place on Thursday, November 14th and the only way the conservatives could pass it through would be with the help of the far right making this move, the first ever legislative act adopted by a conservative/far right majority. It's possible to stop this if a majority can't be found OR if Ursula Von der Leyen withdraw her proposal to delay, just like she promised if there were signficiant changes to the text. The line holding the Green Deal together and keeping the far right away from crucial regulations is thinning and it's up to us to make some noise about it and prevent it from breaking.
