[**Current Mood** |embarrassed]Just got my photos from Bear in Winter back yesterday, and thought I would share:http://www.climbingrose.net/bearinwinter/I have to admit these are pretty Xenia and German Ambassador-heavy, but you'll see several other familiar faces, as well. Wish I had gotten more photos. :(Anyway, enjoy! Thanks again to the GM's! And to glaciation, 1200seconds, and jendaviswilson for taking pictures with my camera on several occasions. | |

Posting Docs Online | [Feb. 3rd, 2004|11:45 am]bearinwinter |
---|---|
I've had multiple requests for electronic versions of Bear in Winter docs. I'd like to put them up somewhere, except for the fact that they are huge (and Acrobat refuses to pdf them). The blueprints .zip file is 7MB alone, for example. If people still want them, I'd be happy to put them somewhere if somebody can offer host space. | |

Firstly, I have on more than one occasion described this even as a 'widget hunt'. I would like to publically apologize for that--this reflects more on my opinion of LARPs than my experience this weekend.I bow in adulation before the god-like organization who staffed this event, and hope to be invited to participate in 'Affection and Affectation'.Secondly, thank you to Chrisber for posting the pictures.Thirdly, I cannot imagine letting this all wrap up and being the only person who sees ( THIS. LJ Cut with the love and mercy that the Mother Church holds for you.Collapse ) | |

The success of Bear in Winter relied on many people. Michael, Christy, and Susannah for all their writing; Chrisber for costumes, research, and his invaluable help with the props and set, Chris Hatty for his help on just about everything (including keeping us all sane) and his wonderful Tsar, and Christy and Leanne for the fantastic food. However, there is one group of people that I'd like to thank most of all: THE PLAYERS! Holy crap, I almost peed when I saw everybody. I realize that people probably knew that a lot of folks on the staff care about costumes, but I honestly did not expect to see a costume on every single player, let alone such incredible costumes on every single player! I also was blown away by the things people did to get into character, like the accents. Also, the quality of play seemed to be at an excellent level. People took what they were given and ran with it. Everyone accomplished more than we could have anticipated, in creative and entertaining ways. I'd like to go on with my favorite stories, but that would take too long. Also, we really, really, really appreciate how everyone helped clean up at the end of the night. We got out of the space with only 10 minutes to spare, and couldn't have done it without you.I forgot to bring my own camera to the game, so if you have pictures, I want to see them! | |

Bear redux, from a propmaster's point of view:I was afraid that the smaller rooms would be too dark, or that we didn't have enough things to make the right atmosphere (each room except the control room only had a very small box of stuff), but it came out much better than anticipated. It was a lot of work, and a lot of cash for the hundreds of yards of fabric involved, but at least now we have those things and don't have to buy them again.Personally, I prefer games to be as immersive as possible. (Michael made some joke last night about me being Donitz: an Immersion Nazi.) This means that I tried to force Michael to have as little out-of-game paper as possible. Of course, it seems that this ended up meaning having as much in-game paper as possible, but that's another story. Also, almost every larp I've been in has had the big-ol-binder, which I always felt like I was hiding behind. This was the birth of the period leather wallets, which I've heard mixed reviews about. I thought that it would be nice to have a container for all the papers that was relatively inobtrusive when not being used. I'm open to other suggestions for the future, although probably the biggest fix is to not have so much paper. On the paper front, I had a blast making all the documents, and although there were a lot of them, I hope people were entertained. The labbooks and blueprints especially, although it can be rather hard finding an appropriate image for "coelonaut equipage" on google image search. I particularly liked the Obregon Support Belt and the Dephlogistonation equipment. Michael brewed up the tech game and handed it over to me for implementation--at first I didn't understand what was going on, but as I started making the labbooks, I realized what a nifty system it was--many people had sequential projects, and were given surplusses and scarcities. The financial system was also nifty--I like the fact that, like in real life, nothing had an absolute value in game. The values were fuzzy depending on how much you paid for something and how much someone else was willing to pay. The assessors all varied by a bit, so you could get a general idea of the worth of an object.I wish that I had been at check-in to help distribute and explain the moveables and sparkly props--there was a lot of confusion about certain things, or information that didn't get conveyed. A thing to be remembered in the future.Overall, I'd like to hear people's impressions of what they liked, or what they think could be improved for the hypothetical next time. I forgot to save some of the discarded paper to see how people managed their record-keeping. My goal is to provide things that facilitate roleplaying and don't require people to break character to deal with mechanics. | |

Cravings | [Feb. 1st, 2004|10:13 pm]bearinwinter |
---|---|
I had a fabulous time. :) It was so great to get to play with people!! Everyone looked so good, and the set was mindblowing...Ladies lounge and everything!! Too perfect, even down to the stationary. I kept all my nifty documents. This specific post, though, is a request for recipes. I dreamt about the food and woke up craving it! During the game, I remember staring at the little cup that held some cream from those puff pastry things with the cream on top, and considering long and hard whether or not there would be a situation where it was socially appropriate for the countess to stick her nose in and lick the cream remants out of the bottom of the cup, and regretfully concluded that it really wasn't the thing to do in good company...but I thought long and hard about it!So, things specifically:I HATE egg salad...but somehow, I devoured two of the egg salad & cucumber sandwiches. How do you make those? And the little beet and cream cheese ones! (I generally dislike beet too, so again, this proves to me that it's how things are put together.)Also, those little hot round pastries stuffed with onions & other things were heavenly. How does one make those?Where was the pate from and what kind was it? So yummy on crackers!!The desserts were heavenly...The cream tasted like it had something added to it for a little kick. What went into that? And did you guys make the little sinful chocolate drops? The tea was wonderful too, just the right temperature. Fortunately, I CAN make that.If it hadn't been for having to sign treaties, I would happily have sat down and eaten the whole afternoon. I didn't get nearly enough!!I'm hungry. Can you tell? | |

Does anyone know where I can find info on how one addresses people of rank? For instance, how should I address a Grand Duchess vs. a count? (Your Grace? Excellency? Highness? Imperial Highness?) | |

Character summaries away! | [Jan. 28th, 2004|08:58 am]bearinwinter |
---|---|
OOC:Character summaries should be sent out over the next 36 hours. We're sending them as they become available, as that seemed more sensible than holding them all until all are done.Your asset packets will probably not be available until the game itself. Your who's who (detailing which other characters you know and why) may or may not be sent out before the game, depending on how the development process goes. And finally, a brief introduction: at the game, I'll be playing Count Mikhail Loris-Melikov, the Russian minister of the interior. I'll be available for roleplay, but also for questions about rules or setting or whatever else may be troubling you. As the interior minister, my political clout is minimal.--Michael Davis-Wilson | |
