There is an expectation that economies of scale might provide greater cost-effectiveness whilst also enhancing student learning. The difficulties and complexities of these expectations are considered in this paper, which explores the challenges faced by those wishing to evaluate the costeffectiveness of computer-based assessment (CBA). The paper outlines the outcomes of a survey which attempted to gather information about the costs and benefits of CBA.

Extant literature suggests a number of problems. First, the frequent confusion that surrounds what this actually means in practice. Second, regardless of the potential for all creative idea generation is not common for most individuals. Finally, successful exploitation of new ideas must overcome social and organizational barriers in the work environment. All are problems that HRD is well placed to address. Integration with creativity and innovation research is essential for HRD to effectively stimulate capability and commitment across multiple levels of the organizational system. An integrated review of literature sources supports the suggestion that integration remains in its infancy. This article proposes a synthesis of extant literature in the field of creativity and innovation with HRD leading to an exploration of practical implications.

Human resource management (HRM) and development, learning, knowledge management and innovation re... more Human resource management (HRM) and development, learning, knowledge management and innovation represent complex and dynamic fields that draw upon multiple disciplines and emphasise the need for multilevel consideration. Such dynamic complexities present opportunities and challenges in an attempt to develop holistic theoretical approaches of how people management implications might contribute to sustainable innovation and performance. The various contributions to this book raise awareness and contribute to a shared understanding of innovation and HRM from multiple perspectives. They highlight the implications for people management through different lenses, including strategic and systems approaches at the level of the organisation, leadership, learning and the contribution of the broader national context to skill development.

As the seed of innovation or fuel for the innovation engine creativity is important throughout the process in distinguishing successful innovations. However, many organisations struggle to transform the rhetoric of creativity and innovation into reality because of a lack of understanding of what this means or how to achieve this. Fragmentation of existing research leads to ambiguous evidence with a danger of spurious relationships or confounding of factors that is inadequate to advance theoretical understanding and inform practice. This investigation provides a number of valuable contributions to overcome such limitations through systemic analysis of individual, social and organisational factors that support creativity based on a research strategy of multiple case studies and employing quantitative and qualitative techniques.
