In this study, surface response methodology (RSM) that employed a two-factor, five-level factorial central composite design (CCD) was used. Thirteen (13) experiments with different combinations of reaction time (x 1) and reaction temperature (x 2) ranging from 1hr (60mins) to 10hrs (600mins) and 60oC to 100oC respectively were also performed. A quadratic model that is polynomial in nature was obtained to predict the percentage oil yield for the small castor seed. Within the experimental variables range, the optimal conditions were found to be 8.68hrs (520.92mins) and 94.14oC respectively. These values were fitted into the quadratic polynomial model that gave rise to the optimum value of small castor seed oil yield to be 55.76% with a p-value less than 0.05. The coefficient of determination R2 was obtained as 0.9530 representing 95.30% of variation in the original data. Our result also gave an adjusted R2 value of 91.95% and predicted R2 value of 66.59% which indicate that the model explains 67% variation in predicting original observations. The result of this study showed clearly the percentage yield of oil that could be extracted from small seeded varieties of castor seed and the optimum yield value possible at a certain reaction time and temperature. The result also established the reliability of response surface methodology to model and optimize the expression of oil from small seeded varieties of castor seed.

This study seeks to discover optimum conditions for the growth and development of castor shrub so that it can meet the yearning of the society to complement fossil fuel that is non-renewable. The research experiment was carried out with big seeded varieties and small seeded varieties of castor seed obtained from Igueben, Edo State, Nigeria. The seeds were sown in plots having a size of 3x4m. Germination was observed at the emergence of the cotyledons above the soil surface. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design replicated two times. Data was obtained by measuring the daily growth parameters of the castor shrub such as: plant height, stem diameter, leaf width, leaf length, petiole length and the petiole diameter. Split-split plot design of experiment was used to search for optimal conditions that will pro...

The evolving nature of the population has made it imperative for a regular up-to-date foot demographic data to be developed and established. As there is paucity of such data, this study seeks to cover this gaping hole. This study adopted the traditional measurement method which entailed the use of anthropometric instruments by five (5) researchers to manually take body measurements of four hundred (400) adult subjects comprising 200 male and 200 female. The participants were within the age bracket of 18-55 years from University of Benin, Benin-City excluding the foreigners, pregnant women, children and individuals with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDS). Stratified random sampling technique was employed in selecting the subjects to be measured. Twenty-seven foot anthropometric data were taken excluding age and weight. The resulting data were descriptively analyzed using SPSS version 16 and paired sample t-test. Result of the descriptive statistics gave the mean age, weight and height of the pooled sample of the population as; 26.47 ± 7.65 years, 63.40 ± 14.07kg and 170.52 ± 8.82cm respectively. The result also revealed that stature is significantly higher in males than in females. The results of the t-test showed that foot length and foot breadth of males differ significantly from those of the females (16.785 and P<0.001), (20.468 and P<0.001). The implication of this is that the foot demographic data established would aid the design of prosthesis and footwear for better functionality.

Tensile tests are performed for several reasons. The results are used in selecting materials for engineering applications. Tensile properties are frequently included in material specifications to ensure quality. The tests are measured during development of new materials and processes, so that different materials and processes can be compared. The objective of this study is to predict and optimize the tensile strength of a butt joint weldment on mild steel plate using response surface methodology. The response surface methodology was applied to predict and optimize the maximum tensile strength of a butt joint weldment on an I-section mild steel plate using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process. The mild steel plate was cut into dimension 60mm x 40mm x 10mm with a power hacksaw, grinded and cleaned before the welding process. The experimental matrix was made of twenty (20)...

The inability of oils and hydroelectric sources to meet the ever growing demand experienced in gl... more The inability of oils and hydroelectric sources to meet the ever growing demand experienced in global energy in recent years has generated a lot of concern. The continuous increase in the demand for energy and the dwindling tendency of petroleum resources has steered endless search for alternative renewable and sustainable fuel. This study adopts a novel combination of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance (KCC) to analyze some factors that affect rubber seed oil-based biodiesel production which has been found to be a good substitute and most advantageous over petrol diesel because of its environmental friendliness. The KCC was used to analyze the data matrix generated by thirteen Judges who were requested to rank the thirty-one variables identified from relevant literature to influence biodiesel production in descending order of importance upon which basis an index of concordance in ranking among the judges was computed as W = 0.84. PCA was use...

This can be successfully achieved by making forecast of future activities and taking the appropriate action stemming from these forecasts. This study presents an exquisite decomposition analysis of a set of 132 months electricity generation time series data (1996-2006) from Sapele Power Station in Ogorode, Delta State, Nigeria. The multiplicative version of the decomposition model was employed to characterize the data obtained into its various components such as Noise, Trends, Cyclical Component, and Seasonal Index. Our results showed a negative trend, with high seasonality, noise and cyclical activities. The implication is that generation is constantly decreasing over the years. This paper however, presents a veritable tool that will add as guide and adjudged intriguing and intuitively appealing for the maintenance managers in...

A simple machine known as Mono-bloc mixer extruder machine for the production of gum from cassava starch was designed and fabricated using locally available materials. Several experimental procedures were carried out which include the selection of materials for the machine, design calculations for the various parts of the machine, performance evaluation test and efficiency determination. Performance evaluation test and observation revealed that for best results, the cooking time of the starch solution with other gum additives should be 30minutes and the cooking temperature had to be in the range 80 0 C – 95 0 C (within the dextrinization zone). The results also revealed that the designed and fabricated machine could produce gum from cassava starch effectively and easy to install, operate and maintain. The machine produc...

This production problem has been ascribed to multitude of hindrances occasioned by the nature of earth formation in the zone. Attempts to ascertain the character or complexion of such problems have often eluded researchers and operators of the field. This study adopts the use of auto-regressive time series model to find out the root cause or the mechanism that generate high output or low output in marginal field. The correlogram that captures the memory of the mechanism that generated the output process was established. And by judiciously picking and choosing the right lags from the correlogram, model that replicates the production process mechanism was also established. The result obtained shows that there is a close tracking of the forecast with the actual. Evidently, the Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) obtained is 5.07% showing that the errors in forecast are marginal suggesting that...

For successful development of a marginal field, it is imperative to understand the various risks and uncertainties that are inherent in developing the field as the oil industry is exposed to a lot of risk more than most manufacturing industries in the world. This study offers clarification and deep intuition about the insidiousness of these risk factors, discusses their wider implications and gives justification for their economic significance. This study investigates a total of thirty-four (34) risk variables influencing marginal oil field development by using a survey approach involving the use of Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance (KCC) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance (KCC) analyzed the level of agreement among the 13 Judges who r...
