The use of de-carbonised electricity to deliver space heating will make significant impact on CO2 emissions for the UK. A likely technology in UK homes is to replace conventional gas boilers with heat pumps. A high coefficient of performance may mean a reduction in energy consumed, in addition the potential to contribute to demand side response through switching controlled via pricing signals. Evaluating the likely energy demand patterns from such systems and understanding how the characteristics of such systems might affect comfort can be estimated using building simulation. This paper describes the modelling and calibration process of an UK family dwelling using high-resolution monitoring data. Monitoring data describing gas, electricity, hot water, window operation and room temperature at minutely interval are used in the process.

The frameworks tie authoring and analysis tools together under one umbrella. In a prototype, the data flow uses a mix of proprietary and publicised file formats, exchanged through publicly accessible interfaces. An analysis framework brokers between the parametric authoring tool and the analysis tools. An optimization framework controls the processes between the authoring tool and parametric engine on one side and the optimization algorithm on the other. The prototype allowed testing assumptions about workflow, implementation, usability and general feasibility of the pursued approach during the SmartGeometry 2012 event.

This data article investigates the use of different weather datasets in building energy simulations across Europe. It focuses on a standard performing building optimized to a nearly-zero level accounting for climate projections towards 2060. The provided data quantify the building energy performance in the current and future scenarios. The article investigates how heating and cooling loads change depending on the location and climate scenario. Hourly weather datasets frequently used in building energy simulations are analyzed to investigate how climatic conditions have changed over recent decades. The data give insight into the implications of the use of weather datasets on buildings in terms of energy consumption, efficiency measures (envelope, appliances, systems), costs, and renewable production. Due to the ongoing changing climate, basing building energy sim...

Research paper thumbnail of DOE's Commercial Buildings Program: A Market-Based Approach to Zero Energy Performance

The United States has approximately 2,665 square miles (6900 square kilometers) of commercial flo... more The United States has approximately 2,665 square miles (6900 square kilometers) of commercial floor space and is projected to add 1,210 square miles (3130 square kilometers) of new floor space between now and 2030. Lighting, space conditioning and other energy service demands in commercial buildings currently require 35% of the nation’s electricity and 22% of its natural gas. Projected increases in floor space (and small increases in intensity) by EIA are also projected to add 580 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent gases by 2030. To help meet these challenges, the DOE Commercial Building Integration Program has embarked on a distinctly new strategy, while still focusing on a goal of marketable net-zero energy buildings (ZEB) by 2025. This paper provides the rationale and an overview of this new strategy as well as progress to date. One key aspect of this strategy is “National Energy Alliances” with commercial building owners and operators in combination with other organizations. ...

The main objective of the survey was to investigate how BPS is taught at a number of different architecture schools at universities in these countries and to point out potential difficulties and barriers. Based on the survey, the paper proposes a number of recommendations and highlights opportunities for future degree schemes that develop module content and learning objectives/ outcome for teaching BPS at architectural tertiary educational institutions.
