BESM d20 (original) (raw)

It's been almost two months since any of us posted here, and I'm sure we all had various things that kept us busy and/or procrastinating (I know I did).
That being said, I was wondering if anyone was still interested in ending this adventure. What follows is our last posting and its comments.
After what seems like an eternity our heroes manage to pry the trap door open, revealing a small, stone walled room. In lieu of a staircase, a ladder is embedded into one of the room's four walls. The rungs are made of wood, and some of them appear to be recent replacements.
From their vantage point at the trap door, they can see that each of the three other walls has a wood door reinforced by metal bands.
In one corner of the room is a small lantern casting shadows about the glorified closet. You cannot see any signs of dust by the lantern's faint light.
Joci examines the room through the hole in the floor, then whispers, "You guys got any ideas?"

Rod heads for the choir loft while Joci heads for the altar, Gavin casts a spell, and Mina runs around opening random doors in search of snakes.
Rod reaches the loft and finds little of interest, although he now has a great view of most of the church - including Gavin huddled between some pews reading a book while he waves his hands around.
Gavin finishes casting the spell, and immediately everything lights up. Not so much the furniture, mind you, but every structural component of the building has some sort of magical aura. Some parts glow more than others, and Gavin guesses that those are boards that have been replaced during various restoration projects.
Oblivious to Gavin's revelation, Mina comes to a closet door and opens it to find a somewhat ragged jacket. She suppresses the urge to say "jinkies" as she checks the pockets and finds a Yay-Mart receipt for cover-up makeup. LOTS of cover-up makeup.
Everyone stops what they're doing and looks to the front of the church when Joci pushes the altar out of the way. Her guess was actually correct - four cuts in the polished floorboards form a square that may actually be this building's tunnel entrance.

Rod is begins to suggest they try the tunnels again, but before he finishes his sentence Chris opens one of the side doors.
"I picked the lock, so what? How did you think I got into Gwydion's office anyway?" In response to questions about why he didn't pick the locks at the last church as well, he simply says that Mina used her ability before the opportunity presented itself.
As they cautiously enter the church's narthex and begin to explore the sanctuary and atrium, they notice an incredible lack of bloody writing covering the walls. There are some displays and informative pamphlets that cover the history of this local landmark, but other then those and the furniture normally found in a church there isn't much to see.
That being said, things still don't seem ... right. Each of them has an uneasy feeling and is fighting an urge to leave as quickly as possible.
A spiral staircase leads up to the choir loft, but there seems to be no basement access in the building.

blakeemrys: Door #2 - three more doors.
After grabbing some fast food our heroes drive over to the Church of the Celibates, the next closest church on their short list of possibilities. It's been a long day, and the sun is just dipping below the horizon as they pull into the parking lot.
This church, like many of the colonial era buildings in town, is constructed out of red brick. Alterations and restorations have been made over the years, but unlike the Indian Tower efforts were made to stay true to the original building materials. The outside walls that touch the sanctuary, nave, and narthex have large windows with arched tops, and while the main entrance on the eastern wall faces the circle in the center of town there are also doors on the eastern edges of the northern and southern walls.
All three doors are locked.
The overall footprint of the church is a simple rectangle. The rest of the property shows a little creativity, but that was done sometime in the late 1900s during a restoration project.

It slowly becomes clear that St. Paul's Lutheran is not involved in any insidious plot and does not have a tunnel entrance. Assuming Chris' reasoning is correct, that leaves Our Lady of Perpetual Motion and the Church of the Celibates as possibilities.
Mina suggests heading to the library, as they already know about that tunnel entrance. It sounds like a good idea, but Chris suggests they drive to the two other churches instead since the tunnels aren't that large, and that would negate half of Mina's superpower.
Other opinions?

Our heroes do their best to search the church basement for secret doors, with each of them doing a combination of looking for scrape marks, inspecting cracks in the walls, and performing the comical "I'll pull this book off the shelf quickly to trigger the spring loaded door" bit. They'd try removing candles from the walls (and putting ... the candles ... back!), but there aren't any.
By further inspecting Rod's map they determine that the closet's far wall is closest to the tunnel, but unfortunately this building's foundation was built after most people had forgotten the tunnels.
If there is a secret door of any kind, no one here can find it.

The shadowy snakelike yet bulky form begins to lean forward, and as its form comes closer to the lit hallway our heroes catch glimpses of green, wrinkly skin covering a rather un-furnace-like head and neck.
Well, everyone but Mina sees it - she's still along the wall reading one of her purloined bibles.

Mina heads down into the basement, followed quickly by Rod and the others, but not fast enough for them to catch up to her.
THe basement is divided into more Sunday School classrooms, and as Mina darts from room to room (as only an anime character on the brink of insanity can do) she finds that they're empty except for tables, chairs, bibles, and other things you'd expect to see in a church.
The basement seems to cover most of the "L" shaped footprint of the church, and as Rod rounds the corner with Joci, Gavin, and Chris close behind, he sees Mina opening the door to a storage room.
The room is dark, but as Mina feels for a light switch she and Rod see ...
