In the Department of Health Professions at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, an interdisciplinary team of professors and researchers developed an e-learning programme, which highlights a new action model. This innovative model guides health professionals in systematically utilizing health promotion and prevention, to promote psychosocial health among their target groups. Internationally, such a model does not exist. Therefore, it offers an new and systematic approach to promoting psychosocial health among various population health levels. Objectives 2019-2023: utilization of programme by department professors and researchers, and transfer of this knowledge to students, or to research projects (via internal marketing and incentives); integration of programme into interdisciplinary bachelor curriculum (via learning packages d...

Appropriate treatment in hospitals depends on the successful communication between hospital staff and patients. Consequently, migrant patients can be particularly challenging for hospital staff. Aims The aim of this project was to examine the following topics: (a) which communicative challenges hospital nurses are confronted with in the care of migrant paediatric patients and how they cope with them, and (b) what requirements nurses (and other stakeholders) have regarding a digital communication aid to improve the care of migrant paediatric patients in the hospital setting. Methods This study used a qualitative approach. The following steps of data collection were undertaken: (a) two literature searches corresponding to the research questions, (b) a focus group interview with paediatric hospital nurses, (c) ...

This study explored health promotion approaches in the nursing home setting, partly in order to move away from a medical model and to improve the well-being of residents and staff. Methods A scoping study was conducted to review the scientific literature. The Integrated Model of Population Health and Health Promotion was adapted for utilization with the literature analysis. Result A total of 64 publications met the inclusion criteria and were analysed. Five main approaches were shown to have applied health promotion in nursing homes, although gaps were present in the usage of systematically applied health promotion. Conclusion A variety of approaches do exist for the nursing home setting which apply health promotion; however, their usage is fragmented. This study revealed that a framework designed to support nursing homes in the systematic usage of health promotion, could improve the w...

Psychosocial health is a complex interaction between the psyche of an individual and the social environment in which that individual lives. Promoting psychosocial health is often challenging and complex for health care professionals. Therefore, an important question of public health significance is: how can we address and improve the psychosocial health of individuals, groups, as well as society in general? An interdisciplinary team of specialists at the Department of Health Professions at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland, focused on the connection between health promotion, prevention, and psychosocial health. This team newly defined these topics in relation to how they could be synergistically combined to promote psychosocial health. Additionally, they presented an action model to graphically dep...
